Chapter 18

Things happen for a reason

It is early in the morning; the sun was already shining directly on my face when I grudgingly woke up alone in my own bed, a bit disoriented and still very sleepy. Rubbing my eyes to keep myself awake, I looked around trying to see if everything is real. Last night seemed like a dream. It seemed a really far-fetched dream where Toma and I finally reconciled.

I walked down the stairs in a dream state, not believing what just happened last night, but as soon as I saw Toma’s bare back in front of me, I knew. It was the reality I have always wanted. Last night was definitely not a dream. I had spend that time in Toma’s arms, listening to his breathing, feeling his warmth and loving every single moment with him.

Right at the bottom of the stairs, I stood and looked at Toma’s back. I was just enjoying that peaceful moment where I could see him only in his pants, barefooted and looking at something very seriously. When I couldn’t stay quiet anymore, I called out to him.

“Ohayou.”

Toma quickly turned around, clearly startled to see me awake.

“Ohayou.” He smiled back at me.

Darn, this man could really make my day. I missed that smile.

“I made breakfast.” He said with a lopsided grin.

“How?” I asked very surprised, since I never had anything good in my cupboard or fridge.

“Woke up early, and bought something at the convenience store. I figured you wouldn’t have anything good in your apartment aside from left-overs from Erika’s.” He shrugged and walked towards me.

Then I saw what exactly he was looking at, it was the sketch I had made.

“I wasn’t that hot back then wasn’t I?” Toma said as he drew me closer to his chest.

“You weren’t.” I replied without thinking.

“Ouch.” He said in a fake hurt tone.

“But I loved you nonetheless.” I said cheerfully.

“You never knew that.” He said defiantly.

“You never did too.” I told him with a raised brow.

“I guess I didn’t.” Toma smiled knowingly.

Then my stomach grumbled loudly which stopped the conversation. We both laughed and headed to the kitchen to eat.

“You seem happy today Mao-chan.” Aoi said as she squatted around my working area inside Kennishiro-san’s building.

“You think so?” I asked.

“I know so.” She said self assuredly.

“It’s been a month since I last saw you, don’t you miss me?” She added.

And I’m sure she had this pout on her face, which I didn’t bother to look at since I’m busy painting the second layer of color for the mural I’m creating.

“No. You always send me messages by phone, how would I miss you?” I said as I carefully painted the wall.

“Still… you’re supposed to miss me. Besides, you’re the next big thing now.” Aoi said cheerfully.

“I am not the next big thing. I just happened to be the next big gossip.” I corrected her.

“Bad publicity is still good publicity.” She said knowingly.

“I think I have heard that somewhere…” My voice trailed off trying to think where I heard that saying.

“C.S.I. Las Vegas I think. So, how are things between you and Toma?” She asked.

My hand with the paint brush stopped mid air as I looked at my ring finger, it was still bare. It twitched as I looked at it more carefully. For once it felt very heavy, although I was happy that Toma and I were back together, there were still unsorted things between us. Like the engagement or his mother. It was all still a piece of scrambled pieces of puzzle that was needed to be fixed and sorted out. Added to it, Toma still doesn’t have a job, though his father tried to recruit him several times.

I wonder what he is doing right now.

“Mao? Mao-chan??? You’re spacing out. The paint is dripping on the floor.” Aoi exclaimed jumping from her position as she laid the news paper on the floor.

“Gome… I was busy thinking.” I said while shaking my head.

“Yeah, I figured that out already when you didn’t answer me.” She said sarcastically as she took her place once again, observing me from behind. As soon as she squatted on the floor the security guard called out to me

“Inoue-san, someone is looking for you.” He nodded at the direction of the door.

Outside the mirrored glass, I could see a figure of a woman standing tall with a pair of huge dark glasses covering most of her face. I couldn’t recognize her in that distance so I quickly put aside my art instruments, wiped my hands and approached my unexpected visitor without bothering to remove my apron.

When I reached the woman standing alone on near the door, her face seemed familiar to me.

“Yes? May I help you?” I asked politely trying to recognize her face.

As soon as she removed the dark sun glasses, it hit me. She was Toma’s mother. This sudden visit took me by surprise. I wondered if she’s going to tell me to leave her son alone again or accuse me for being worse than a brazen hussy. My face suddenly became stoic as soon as I recognized her, my body went rigid and my mind seemed to be more alert than ever. This was the same feel I had when she first went to me and told me to leave Toma alone.

“I came here…” Her voice trailed off, still with the haughty look as she looked around.

“I came here to apologize.” Her voice seemed softer as she said this.

This caught me off guard. Coming from Toma’s mother, especially with the rumors about me and an actor flying around… this was very unexpected.

Was she lying? Was she trying to earn my trust so in the end I wouldn’t have a choice but to leave Toma?

“Excuse me?” I said dumbfounded.

“I don’t have to repeat myself young lady.” She reprimanded me sternly, which took me aback.

That so sounded like Toma’s mother.

“That’s all I wanted to say and… I give my blessing for you and my son.” Mrs. Ikuta nodded at me then abruptly turned around without waiting for me to speak.

My mouth was probably hanging in shock from her words. I stood there without speaking or moving, I just looked at her back as she slowly disappeared by the stairs.

“No way. That just didn’t happen.” I told myself loudly looking utterly bewildered.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What made her do that?!?” Erika asked me in the middle of the shopping center.
That same afternoon, Erika asked me to go shopping to look for wedding souvenirs, so we walked through the bridal shops discussing what happened to me earlier.
“I have no idea.” I said really confused.
“Maybe Toma black mailed her or something.” Erika rubbed her chin trying to think for more reasons.
“Probably even bribed her.” I said.
“Toma doesn’t have enough money to bribe his own mother… so how did that happen?” Erika said knowingly, her logical thinking won over.
“Again… zero ideas.” I answered.
We stopped in front of a shoe store, where everything was pink.
“Why pink?” We said at the same time then looked at each other and laughed.
“I don’t care, but those shoes do look damn good!” I said and rushed inside the store fitting the stilettos and thong heels.
“You definitely are a shoe addict.” Erika said shaking her head.
“If you where a shoe, what would you be?” I asked as I gazed at the mirror reflecting my feet.
“I’ll be a knee high boots.” She answered at once.
“Why?” I asked curiously.
“It’s because I would always protect not just the feet but also the leg of the person who would be wearing me.” Erika said, saying once again something that came out of her logical thinking.
“What about you?” It was her turn to ask.
“I would be a black, high heeled, skinny strapped open toe sandal.” I said confidently.
“EH? Why be something that is so hard to wear?” She asked.
“At least being like that, I would always be in fashion, never forgotten and easy to pair with anything.” I said smugly.
“Don’t you realize what you’re saying?” Erika said in disbelief.
“What?” I exclaimed.
“If you apply that in real life, it would seem that you are a real brazen hussy!” She said arriving with that conclusion.
“If that’s the case, then why did Toma’s mother suddenly accepted a brazen hussy like me to be her daughter in law?” I wondered back to that question as I looked at the pair of pink thong heels at my feet.
“Maybe because you’re a very fashionable brazen hussy?” Erika suggested as she grazed her eyes from my whole outfit to the pink shoes I was wearing.
“Fat chance.” I told her while smirking.
But I still felt pretty puzzled for the change in Mrs. Ikuta’s heart.
Hey guys... the alternate ending I’m talking about is just specifically for chapter 17 only, NOT for the entire fic. I hope I cleared that up… >_<
Some piece of thought… have you guys heard the saying “Bad publicity is still good publicity”? Coz the last time I heard about it is from CSI las vegas… so I really wouldn’t remember where that originally came from. Maybe you have an idea. ^_^v
