The Emerald Shopping Center was filled with many couples as the romantic festival of Valentine’s Day was approaching. They were all preparing to buy each other their Valentine gifts and prepared for this sweet event.
Charmaine and Tavia strolled through the mall together as they gazed at the different ads and decorations promoting things about Valentine’s Day.
“Buy this necklace for you and your other half and happiness and love would be guranteed.”, a sign said. They both looked at this sign and sighed, “like some necklace is going to tell you who the love of your life would be.”
Charmaine turned to her sister, Tavia who had just sighed very loudly with an obvious hint of depression. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “A lot! Why did Bosco have to break up with me right before Valentine’s Day?” cried Tavia. “Why can’t any of my relationships last long like yours, Charmie? Why? You’re so lucky. I hate the feeling of being single during Valentines!”
This time, it was Charmaine who felt a tinge of sadness build up inside her. “Me? Lucky? I don’t think so. Yes, Raymond and I have been going out for 2 years now, but he’s been in Paris for 1 whole year. I haven’t seen him since his last visit 6 months ago, and he’s probably not going to spend Valentine’s with me. It feels like being in a relationship with him is just the same as staying single.” Saying this out made Charmaine feel terrible. How could she have so many friends whose relationships are all working out, as if they’re in heaven, while she and her sister are always stuck in the deadly trap of love? As a natural instinct, Charmaine kept strolling through the mall in dead silence.
Suddenly, Tavia spoke up, “Break up with him.” After hearing this, Charmaine looked far into the distance. Break up? Those two words began ringing in her head. It was as those words were haunting her. Break up…Break up… Break up… “Break up with him!” shouted Tavia as she shook Charmaine’s shoulders. “There’s no point in being in a relationship with some guy who says he loves you then flies to another country and calls everyday or so. For all we know, he could very well possibly be dating another girl in Paris right now! Trust me, Charm, he’s not worth it.”
In response, Charmaine only replied, “Looks like me and you are always gonna be stuck in the deadly trap of love.” With that, she pulled Tavia towards the mall exit. “Let’s go home now, I’m tired.”

RING RING RING!
The telephone rang as Tavia rushed out to the living room to pick up the phone with a tinge of hope wishing that it might be Bosco. Unfortunately to her, it was only Raymond calling for Charmaine. “Charmaine! Your boyfriend, get out here now!”
Within twenty seconds, Charmaine was out in her Garfield PJs. She bounced onto the soft white leather couch and picked up the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hey Charmie. I missed you!”
“Me too, Ray.” She was longing to ask if he was going to come back for Valentine’s Day, but she was afraid to. Afraid that he would say no, say that he was too busy and had to work.
“Charmie… I’m sorry, but I don’t think I’ll be coming back for Valentine’s day this year. I have a lot of work to do and father expects me to stay in Paris to organize the fashion show our company will be hosting.” Hearing this made Charmaine’s heart sink but she tried hard to hide her disappointment.
“It’s okay Ray. Work is important, we can always see each other sometime later.”
Tears began to well up in her eyes. She couldn’t hide her sadness any longer, so she decided to say goodbye and hung up without even waiting for Ray to reply.
Clearly, neither of them knew when “sometime later” was. When Ray left a year ago, he never even told her when he’ll come back. Charmaine’s mind began to race back to what Tavia had said earlier, “Break up with him! There’s no point in being in a relationship with some guy who says he loves you then flies to another country and calls everyday or so. For all we know, he could very well possibly be dating another girl in Paris right now! Trust me, Charm, he’s not worth it.”
Should she break up with him? Should she? Charmaine was caught in her own thoughts, but a flashback of what happened one year ago suddenly popped up in her mind.
-flashback-
*One year Ago*
*Hong Kong airport*
Charmaine and Raymond were walking towards the departure halls at the airport. They were both silent.
Suddenly, Raymond stopped. He held Charmaine’s hands and looked her straight in the eyes.
“Charmaine, I’m sorry I have to go to Paris, leaving you behind. As soon as I finish taking care of my father’s company issues, I will come back. You have to wait for me.”
Charmaine continued to stare into Raymond’s eyes and didn’t respond. Raymond took this as a hint to continue. “Charm, I’m honest. I love you. Please wait for me, I will come back as soon as I can and I’ll try and come back to visit you as much as possible. You have to believe in our love.”
Hearing that softened Charmaine as she nodded. Raymond wrapped his arms around Charmaine and hugged her. To Charmaine, this moment she wished would last forever, because she knew once they let go of each other, Ray would be traveling away. And this moment came.
Raymond let go of their hug and instead, wrapped his arms around Charm's waist. He pulled her in for a kiss and whispered, "Promise me you will wait for me, I love you so much." This sentence only made it harder for Charmaine to let go of Raymond, but her will power made her do so. With one more quick peck on Charmaine's cheek, Raymond turned around and departed.
Charmaine watched as Raymond disappeared into the distance. She could only lie to herself, telling herself that Raymond was going to come back… soon… At this time, little did she know, “soon” was not going to be very soon.
-flashback end-
Tears slid down Charmaine’s cheeks. Thoughts of Raymond began racing through her mind again, and more vividly, the day he left her. Was it possible that Ray had another girl? Was it all just a lie, another way to ditch me? But if it was, why would he still call me? No, it can’t be. But what if what Tav said was true? Maybe I should just give up on him. Charmaine drowned herself in her negative thoughts and tears. But after too many tears, Charmaine fell asleep on the couch.

Actually, “tu me manques” DOES mean “I miss you”. It’s just that in the French language, things work differently. A literal translation would be “you are missing to me” but like any other different languages, literal translations don’t always make sense. Also, Tu me manques" means "I miss you" because the "me" in french is an indirect object. It means "to me" in english. And “I miss you” cannot be translated as “Je te manque” as that would mean “you miss me”. Plus, I study French and just checked the dictionary, so I doubt that I’m wrong. I hope this explanation helps clear up the confusion. =)
