Chapter 3

The Game Has Just Begun

“Mr. Lam. Wake up! Mr. Lam. MR. LAM!!!”

“What?” Mr. Lam wakes and jumps from the sofa. He grabs a pillow and throws it into the air. He shouts, “Help me...the killer is here!”

“Mr. Lam, it’s me, Officer Gordon Chan. Please calm yourself!”

Mr. Lam stares blankly at Gordon; he suddenly realizes that it is already in the morning, and he is sitting safely on the sofa. He recollects his thoughts, and asks, “What time is it?”

“It’s seven in the morning, Mr. Lam. Nothing happened last night. No one came, and the sensory monitors didn’t detect anything suspicious.”

Mr. Lam shakes his head, and replies unbelievingly, “So, that Bird thingy didn’t show up and kill me. Ha ha…” He suddenly stops laughing. “But who send the note? And what is that person trying to do? Scare me off? Or really wanted to kill me? But...Probably...” He keeps mumbling to himself.

As Mr. Lam talks to himself continuously, Gordon goes around the house to order the police to move out. He asks his unit to wait for him outside the garden. He also asks another two units to come over here to replace the tired police. He walks out to the garden.

“Chan Sir!”

“Great work everyone, although nothing really happened.” He paused. “I know your must be extremely sleepy, so for a generous boss like me, you all are free to go home and rest.”

The five of them look at each other in relief.

Gordon added, “However, we are meeting at 3pm today at the police station.”

“But...” Mimi tries to argue.

“No arguments. This is an order. The officers on top are still concerned and put the burden on us to investigate this whole issue, whether it is a joke or not.” He looks around the garden. “And before your leave, try to look around in the garden to look for stuff we missed last night in the dark.”

“Yes Sir!” Gordon walks back into the house.

The five tired police pace around the garden, and begin their investigation…

When Gordon walks into his unit’s room at 3pm, his staffs are all working busily. That’s why he is always proud of his team and their “best record’.

“Good Afternoon, Chan Sir!”

“Good Afternoon! Good work everyone.” He walks into the meeting room; his staffs follow. Gordon takes a seat at the end of the table, while the others take their seats accordingly.

“So, any findings?”

Michaels answers first, “I searched throughout the database. I found no info on ‘Bird of the Night’.”

“Um.”

Phillip then says, “We looked around the garden this morning. We found nothing special. We are absolutely sure that no outsiders could have climb over the security fence to enter the garden. But that left the question of how does that note get into the garden?”

Mimi adds, “We came to the conclusion that it must be delivered by one of the residents in the Lam’s mansion.”

“Um...It’s possible. But we still don’t know if the whole thing is a joke or not. What do your think?” asked Gordon.

Michael answers, “Obviously, no one showed up yesterday night. But it could be that the person was scared off by our preparation that he, or she, didn’t act accordingly.”

Daisy argues, “But it could be a joke, just to make fun out of us or Mr. Lam.”

Gordon looks at Charmaine, who has not spoken yet. He asks, “What do you think Charmaine?”

She answers slowly, “Personally, I wish that it is a joke, but based on Mr. Lam’s reaction to the whole event, I will say that it is probably more complicated.”

Gordon asks, “You mean probably Mr. Lam is hiding something behind us?”

Charmaine responds, “I am not sure about this, but I guess he might be pretty sure that he is in real danger, or else he wouldn’t be so crazy in demanding our protection.”

Mimi agrees, “I think Charmaine might be right. Rich people like Mr. Lam usually have many rivals and enemies. It could be that Mr. Lam suspect one of his rivals is coming after him, so he is kind of frantic.”

Gordon replies, “We have to take into account of Charmaine’s worry, but we can’t be too subjective.” He stands up and walks around the room. “Your said that the note must be delivered by someone in the house?” He asks.

Daisy replies, “Yea. Also, we took the note to the lab for inspection. They said the marks at the edge of the paper are just ink of a pen, the same one used to write the words. As we have seen, the handwriting on the note is quite bad. I guess the person must have written the note in a hurry.”

Gordon thinks for awhile; he suddenly stops walking and says, “I think the best way for us to do now is go back to Lam’s mansion, and try to ask around, and see if anyone might be the one who put down the note in the garden. We will determine the motive behind this whole thing later, after I ask Mr. Lam for more information.”

“Yes Sir!”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Gordon’s eight-people van reaches the Lam’s mansion, they see a lot of reporters gathered outside the golden gate. Michael goes out and asks them to go away.

After much chaos, the van finally travels through the gate. The front door is opened when the six police walk to it. They enter the giant house, and are greeted by a group of maids.

One maid says, “Chan Sir, Mr. Lam is in his study. He said he want to see you when you arrive.”

“Okay, I want to talk to him, too.” Gordon answers. He starts to follow the maid.

After Gordon leaves, the others start their “job”. Phillip goes to question the drivers and the gardeners. Michael goes to talk to Mr. Lam’s son, Bosco. Mimi and Daisy are responsible for the maids, while Charmaine goes to talk to the two Mrs. Lam.

Charmaine first talks to first Mrs. Lam (Ah Yee), who is watching TV in the entertainment room. Ah Yee doesn’t have much to provide.

Later, Charmaine goes upstairs. She finds the third Mrs. Lam (Ah Zhu) in her room. She knocks on the door.

“Who is it?”

“This is Sergeant Charmaine Lau. We met last night.”

“Oh! Please come in!”

Charmaine opens the door. She finds Mrs. Lam sitting in a rocking chair while knitting something. The room is very well-organized, with a king-sized bed in the middle, and all sorts of beautiful closets and decorations around the room. She asks, “May I ask you a few question, Mrs. Lam?”

Mrs. Lam looks up from her knitting, and replies, “Sure, but hopefully not too personally.”

“Don’t worry. It’s just simple question. You don’t mind me sitting down?”

“No problem.” Mrs. Lam continues her knitting.

Charmaine takes a chair across from Mrs. Lam, and takes out her notebook and pen. She asks, “So, it was your jacket that was left outside in the garden yesterday night, right?”

“Yeah, it’s the one I am wearing now. I like this jacket really much as it was a birthday gift from Lao Ye, which is Mr. Lam.”

“Oh, I see. It’s really pretty indeed.”

“Thanks.”

Charmaine continues her questioning, “Did you observe any unusual things happened yesterday, like did anyone act nervously?”

“Hm…hm…I don’t recall.”

Suddenly, Charmaine’s cell phone vibrates in her bag. She says, “Sorry, I have a call.” She hears the phone.

“Charmaine, Chan Sir orders us down immediately.”

“Alright.” She closes the cell phone, and says to Mrs. Lam, “Sorry Mrs. Lam, I got to go down now. Thanks for your cooperation.”

As Charmaine approaches the door, Mrs. Lam suddenly speaks, “Oh wait, I think I have something to tell you. Now as I think back, I am really sure that I had taken my jacket with me when I leave the garden in the afternoon. I don’t know why it is in the garden. It’s just weird.”

Charmaine’s eyes flickers slightly, and replies, “Oh. Thanks for your information. I’m leaving now.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Charmaine walks down the stairs, she hears noises coming from the living room. She immediately goes over there.

She sees her teammates gathered in front of the sofa, with Mr. Lam sitting on the sofa. The maid, Ah Lan, is standing right in front. They seem to be questioning her.

Charmaine asks Daisy, who is standing at the back, “What’s going on?”

“We found the person who put the note in the garden. And it is Ah Lan.”

Charmaine begins to focus to the questioning. Gordon says, “So, why did you do it?”

Ah Lan replies fearfully, “My son was in debt as your just found out. I need a lot of money. Then on last Friday when I had my day off, someone phoned me and told me if I can help, the person said he will give me $200000, enough to cover my son’s debt. I gave him my account number, and money was there on Saturday.”

“What did the person ask you to do?”

“He asks me to write up a note. I have to pretend I found it in the garden yesterday night. He said everything will be fine. No one will find out and Mr. Lam will be safe.” She looks around, “I….. didn’t mean to do any harm.”

“You said ‘he’, is it a man?”

“The person said I can call him bird of the night. His voice is being treated, so I really could not…tell.”

“Did he say anything else?”

She shakes her head.

Gordon says, “Okay, Ah Lan, although it is not totally your fault, you might be taken charges. Mimi, take her back to the station for further questioning.”

“Yes Sir!”

Mr. Lam frowns and asks, “So what does this mean? Am I safe now?”

As Gordon opens his mouth to speak, a maid walks in hurriedly.

She interrupts, “Mr. Lam, I have something for you.”

Everyone looks at her. She holds up an envelope.

Gordon seizes the envelope, and examines it. It is an ordinary letter, except a name is signed in the back: Bird of the Night.

He opens it immediately, and reads it aloud:
“Dear Mr. David Lam,
This is me again.
Sorry about scaring you off, didn’t mean to in the first place.
Been busy lately, that’s why I didn’t make it to your house to execute your death.
Anyways, for someone like you, death would not be too faraway.
And to the police, I just want to say,
THE GAME HAS JUST BEGUN!
