Chapter 4

Have We Met Before?

“Hey, there he is!” The crowd of reporters immediately rushes forward. All of their mouths open at the same time.

“Mr. Lam, how was your trip?”

“Mr. Lam, what do you think about your father’s case?”

“Mr. Lam......"

Julian Lam remains quiet. Despite the reporters blocking his way, he keeps walking and walking, until he reaches the exit of the airport.

He stops and says loudly, “I have nothing to say. Would your please make way?”

The reporters don’t want to give up, and continue to surround him.

Two men in uniform suddenly appear in front of the crowd. They shove off the reporters and guide Julian to a black Benz car. Julian quickly takes his seat in the car. The car drives off.

“Siu Ye (young master)!” The driver greets Julian politely.

“Um. Those two men?”

“Airport people. I call them in to protect you from those reporters.”

“Good work.” Julian pauses and asks, “I read the newspaper in the plane. How’s Dad?”

“Lao Ye (master) is fine. But he is worried. He was worried about you too. He said you should have brought someone with you to the trip in the first place.”

“You know I don’t like people following me around. I am fine by myself.” He looks out through the window. “So, where is Dad now?”

“At the police station.”

“Okay. Bring me to him.”

“Yes, Siu Ye!”

“This way please.”

“Thanks.”

A policewoman leads Julian down a long corridor. They stop in front of a room. She knocks on the door. A voice replies, “Come in.”

The policewoman opens the door. As they walk in, Julian sees many police standing. He sees a person sitting at a sofa at the far end of the room. That is his dad, Mr. David Lam.

“Chan Sir, this is Mr. Julian Lam. He wants to see his father.”

“Oh.” Gordon walks toward Julian and put his hand out, “Hi! Mr. Lam. I am Officer Gordon Chan. I am responsible for your father’s case.”

Julian shakes hand with Gordon, and replies, “Nice to meet you! You can call me Julian if you want. Do you mind if I talk to my dad?”

“Oh. No problem. But we need to question you afterwards. Don’t worry! It’s just simple questions that may help us solve the case.”

“Okay.” Julian walks off to his father. Gordon and the policewoman leave the room.

“Dad.”

“Julian. I almost forgot that you are coming back this morning.” David yawns. “Sorry. Too many things are going on. I couldn’t sleep well last night after I got that stupid letter.”

“So, all the things in the newspaper are true? You mean you really got notes that threatened to kill you?”

David nods. He says, “The police have brought in everyone in our house and in the company for questioning. They even call in Lao Chiu (Old Chiu). I say probably is him that’s behind this case. He is always jealous of our company. Do you remember the maid Ah Lan? She had been paid to threaten me. I guess she must be used by Lao Chiu.”

“I don’t think Uncle Chiu will be that impudent. Dad, don’t worry. The police will solve the case out.”

Charmaine and Michael walks into the room with Gordon. Gordon says, “Michael, Charmaine, can your take Mr. Julian Lam to room #5 for an interrogation?”

“Yes Sir!”

Charmaine walks toward Julian, and says, “Mr. Lam, I am Sergeant Charmaine Lau. Please follow us this way.”

Julian turns around. He looks at Charmaine. In his mind, he feels that he has met her before. But where? He cannot recall her face. But her eyes; they look so familiar. Her eyes.......

“Mr. Lam. Are you okay?” Michael asks.

Julian recollects himself, and replies, “Sorry.”

Michael says impatiently, “This way please.”

The three of them walk out of the room.

Julian keeps his eyesight at Charmaine as they walk. Charmaine simply ignores him and walks ahead. She stops in front of a small room and opens the door. That’s interrogation room #5.

She says, “Please take a seat.”

Julian takes a seat at one end of the table, while Charmaine sits right across from him. Michael turns on the recorder system of the room. He then takes a seat beside Charmaine.

Before Charmaine can speak, Julian asks, “Madam, have we met before?”

Michael wants to say something, but Charmaine already replies quickly, “I don’t think so. Mr. Lam.” She pauses. “Let’s begin the questioning. Alright?”

Julian replies embarrassingly, “Oh! Sorry. Sure, let’s begin.”
