Chapter 6

The Diamond

“Come in.”

The door opens. A twenty something years old girl walks in and says, “Ms. Yeung, Mr. David Lam wants to see you in his room.”

Gigi Yeung looks up from her desk, and replies, “Oh. I will be right there.” The girl leaves and closes the door behind her.

Gigi gets up, and prepares to leave. She is one of the top jewelry designers in Hong Kong, being employed by the Lam’s Jewelry Corporation. She enjoys working here, not only for the well-paid salary and benefits, but also for Julian.....

As Gigi walks into David’s room, she sees David and Julian gather in front of the desk. A group of guards are standing beside them. She walks toward the desk, and says, “Mr. Lam, I am here.”

David and Julian turn around. David says, “Come over here to look at THIS!”

Gigi curiously peeks forward. She sees a box opened up on the desk. Inside the box, there is a diamond. It’s the most beautiful she has even seen. She is amused by the wonderful sight.

David asks proudly, “Isn’t it beautiful, Gigi?”

“Of course, Mr. Lam” She cannot take her eyes off that diamond.

Julian says, “Alright. I think the show-time should be over.” He goes over to the guards and asks them to stand outside of the room. He walks with them and closes the door.

David steps over to a black box at his right. He says, “Gigi, this is a highly protective, complex safe. Just installed this morning. And of course, it will be used to store the diamond.” He kneels down and starts to open the safe. The safe actually has three passes. The first pass involves a combination knob with 40 numbers on it. David carefully turns the knob to the right, then to the left, stopping at specific numbers in between. After three turns, the door clicks open.

Next, there is an electronic number pad. David presses at six digits. The second door clicks open as well.

The third one is more complicated, which has a double combination knob. David uses both of his hands, working really carefully. The final door opens, revealing the interior of the safe. The compartment is not really big, just enough to fit the box holding the diamond on the desk.

Julian helps his father to get up. David says, “The combinations numbers will only be known by us three, in order to ensure extra safety. I think we can trust you, right?”

Gigi answers confidently, “Of course Mr. Lam. I won’t tell anyone else, even threatened by death.”

David looks satisfied. He returns to his seat behind the desk and closes the lid to the diamond box. Julian asks his dad, “So when do you want the “Diamond Display Party” to take place?”

David replies, “Um…I think next Saturday will be good. Remember to tell the press about it.”

Julian says, “I think the police might want to know about it as well.”

“Oh yeah. They can be an extra help if we needed, in case some thieves want to steal my precious diamond.”

The summer holidays are over, and the universities start the new term. Myolie wakes up really early, just to make sure she will not be late. She waits for her best friend, Nancy (acts by Nancy Wu), who lives two blocks away. They together catch the bus and head on to school.

When they arrive, they see a group of students gather around a pavilion in the school’s garden. They walk toward there to see what’s going on.

As they approach the crowd, they hear a person saying, “…the diamond is just pretty. Of course, no one right here will have the chance to see it beside me!”

Myolie asks a girl standing next to her, “What’s up?”

The girl answers, “Bosco Lam is telling us about the new diamond his dad purchased. He said they are going to have a display party this Saturday. Looks like it’s going to be fun!”

Nancy says, “Wow. But aren’t they afraid of that ‘Bird of the Night’? I heard it over the news that Mr. Lam was threatened just last week.” At the same time, the people in the front are asking Bosco the same question that Nancy asked.

Bosco brags, “Of course we aren’t afraid. We have ordered over fifty guards to station around. And plus the police are protecting us as well. We also have a super-protective safe to keep the diamond.” He eyes around, “And of course, if that ‘Bird of what-so-ever’ shows up, I am sure going to fight it off!”

Myolie fights her way to the front. She says to Bosco, “Oh really? So brave to fight someone off? If you are that brave, I don’t think you need those people to protect you.” She points toward the back where the four guards are standing. The crowd all turns to look at the guards.

Bosco answers back, “Of course I can fight someone off! Those people are sent by my dad to make sure I am alright. I don’t really need them.” He looks at Myolie, “And who are you? Why are you questioning me?”

Myolie answers proudly, “Oh. My name is Myolie Ma. Of course you don’t know me, but I think you know my brother Michael Lam. He is the Sergeant that works on your father’s case. He told me that someone was so frightened last week that almost fainted when he heard of the name ‘Bird of the Night’.”

Bosco answers furiously, “And that was not me! So what do you want here?”

Myolie replies calmly, “I just want to tell you that sometimes, it’s just not good to boast too much.”

Bosco wants to slap Myolie, but is stopped by his three “followers” friends, Sam (acts by Sam Chan), Don (acts by Don Li), and Chris (acts by Chris Lai). Myolie says, “Wow! Someone wants to hit a girl!”

Nancy taps on Myolie’s shoulder and says, “Myolie, it’s almost time for class. I think we should not create more commotion.”

Myolie nods, “Okay. I should not waste time on someone unimportant. Bye Mr. Lam.” Myolie walks out of the crowd with Nancy, and head on to their first class.

The crowd scatters after Myolie and Nancy left. Bosco is still angry and scolds his three friends, “Why stop me? I should have punished that stupid girl!”

Sam replies, “Chak Siu (meaning Bosco Mister), It’s not good to hit someone in front of so many people. And I don’t think it will be good to get into trouble on the first day of school.”

Bosco sits down on a stone bench. He says, “Um…You’re probably right. But if I ever see that girl again, I will teach her a lesson definitely!!!”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The week passes by quickly. It’s Saturday night. Charmaine and Michael are getting ready to go the party. They have to dress up formally in party clothing, according to the arrangement between Mr. Lam.

Myolie suddenly pops up into Michael’s room, already in pretty dress, and begs her brother, “Please let me go with you all! I promise I won’t cause any trouble! And the police sure need help.”

Michael answers impatiently, “No! How many times do I have to tell you?!”

“Please, brother. You are the greatest!”

“NO! Get out of my room and change your clothes NOW!”

Myolie frowns and leaves sadly. However, she goes to find Charmaine instead of following what her brother told her to do.

As Myolie enters Charmaine’s house, she sees Charmaine in a beautiful dress. She says, “Wow! You are so pretty!”

Charmaine answers, “Thanks. And why are you here?”

Myolie begs, “Please let me go with you all. PLEASE!”

Suddenly, Michael appears at the opened door, and says to Myolie, “Okay. Don’t bother Charmaine. We will bring you and let you scold by Chan Sir.” He then turns his stare to Charmaine, where he is fascinated by the sight. He says, “Charmaine, you are really beautiful. Mind to be my partner tonight?”

Charmaine looks at Michael, then at Myolie. She shakes her head and don’t know what to say to the brother and sister.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The party is being held at the big conference room in the nineteenth floor of the Lam’s Jewelry Corporation building, just one floor above Mr. Lam’s office room. Many rich and famous people are invited to the party, even including David’s rival, Mr. Chiu.

The police are there before the guests are allowed to enter the conference room. They set up everything for protection, including station a whole team of police guarding outside of David’s room

At seven o’clock, the guests are allowed to enter the conference room. The police check on everyone entering the room to avoid thieves and suspicious people.

The entire Lam’s family is there to welcome the guests. Julian looks around, hoping to find someone. He then sees her coming from the back. He walks toward her and says, “Hi Madam Charmaine. Want to be my dance partner, tonight?”

Charmaine answers, “Sorry, Mr. Lam, I can’t. I have duties to attend to, and now I have to report to downstairs. See you later!” She slips pass the guests and goes to the elevator.

Julian looks disappointed, and goes back to his position of welcoming guests. Gigi, who is standing not far away, saw everything. She becomes quite jealous.....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Myolie walks around the room. She is really bored and regrets of coming to the party, for she knows no one here except several police. She starts to help herself for some food and drinks. As she is pouring herself some fruit-punch, she accidentally knocks down her cup on a person standing right in front of her. She immediately apologizes, but stops when she finds out who the person is.

The person shouts, “What are you doing? My tux is ruined!” He looks at Myolie, “YOU again???” He is Bosco.

Myolie says, “Oh Mr. Lam, I am really sorry. But you have many of those tuxes. You don’t need to fuss so much about it.”

Bosco is furious. He asks, “Why are you here? I don’t think my dad will invite some stupid girl like you!”

Myolie answers, “For your information, I’m not stupid girl. And I don’t think you need to know why I’m here. Bye!” She runs off immediately, leaving Bosco behind in his wet tux......

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s almost eight. The real “display” time has almost arrived. David Lam announced proudly to his guests that he will now go and bring the diamond from his office.

He is accompanied by Julian, six police and three guards. Michael and Charmaine open the door for David to enter. He asks the people to stay outside of the office while he opens the safe.

David starts to open the safe. The third door finally clicks open. He takes out the box and closes the safe.

The whole team heads back to the party room. Everyone is excited. They all want to see the most beautiful diamond in the world.

David put down the box at the table. He opens it, and announces, “This is my precious diamond!”

Everyone looks at the table at once. Almost everyone exclaims. But not because of the beautifulness of the diamond, it is only because all they see is a piece of rock sitting inside the box. The diamond is GONE.......
