Chapter 12

Stress

Day 2 of filming commenced with a run-in with some minor, technical difficulties over the lightings.

Selina and Calvin stood to one side, watching with interest as the on-set technicians scurried around rapidly, yelling instructions and directions at each other, sending assistants hurrying to and fro with boxes of tools and equipments.

“I hope they get everything fixed in time,” Selina looked slightly anxious. “We’ve already delayed shooting for about an hour.”

“Worrywart,” Calvin teased her. “Rub that frown off of your face. I’m sure they’d be done in no time.”

A fetching pout formed on Selina’s lips, “I’m not a worrywart!” she began one of her usual bickers with him.

It was surprising how easily and quickly she warmed up to the tallest member of Fahrenheit. She wasn’t the best socialiser in the world, she knew, and it normally took more than a few days for her to feel comfortable enough to really be herself in front of another person.

But here she was, laughing and playfully swatting at Calvin’s head as he turned to duck away from her hands.

“Selina?”

Selina turned in surprise. “El? What are you doing here?”

Ella shrugged, “I was in the area. Thought I’d drop by to see how things are,” she turned and shot Calvin a friendly, reserved smile. “Hi Calvin. Looking dashing in your doctor’s coat, I see.”

Calvin shrugged modestly. “Hi! What a welcomed surprise.”

Ella scanned the area curiously, noticing the unusually busy atmosphere. “What on earth is happening?”

“There was some sort of a problem with the lights or something,” Calvin explained, his tone unconcerned. “We’re waiting for them to fix the glitch.”

Ella nodded slowly, her attention taken by somebody who was scaling the walls to rearrange some wires.

“So, have you started on your script? You’re scheduled to be on set tomorrow afternoon, right?” Calvin asked, making small talk.

“I’ve finished memorizing everything already,” Ella turned back to say cheerfully. “I can’t wait. My first scene is going to be you running after me while I’m on the bus, yes?” she wiggled her eyebrows playfully at him.

Calvin heaved a dramatic sigh. “I can’t say I’m really looking forward to that.”

Ella laughed lightly. “Well, I’ll be sure to not make any mistakes so we can keep retakes…” her voice trailed away as her gaze focused on something behind Calvin. She must have seen something she did not like for she stiffened visibly before finishing her sentence haltingly, “So we can keep retakes to a minimum.”

Calvin frowned, turning to see just what had caused Ella to whiten in shock. He blinked in disbelief.

Chun.

How awkward, Calvin thought with a small shake of his head. Either the both of them had the most rotten luck in history and were destined to forever run into each other even if they hated to be in each other’s company, or someone up there was trying to tell them all something; perhaps that Chun and Ella were meant to be?

Either way, there was no doubting how weird it was that they could somehow always manage to uncannily bump into each other. There had to be some mysterious power at work here, there couldn’t be any other explanation for all the coincidences.

Chun did not notice Ella’s presence until a mere few feet away. And by then, it was too late for him to do anything else other than walk up to the three and offer his greetings.

“I…uh…” he stumbled a little over his words, looking extremely uncomfortable. “I was in the area, thought I’d drop by for a visit.”

“Hi Chun!” Calvin’s voice sounded overly loud and cheerful.

“That’s very nice of you,” Selina said uneasily, feeling at a total loss. She shot a worried look at Ella who had pulled on an utterly serene look.

Calvin shifted restlessly, trying to gauge Chun’s mood today, hoping that he wouldn’t cause any problems by snapping unnecessarily at Ella.

But Chun, apparently, had no inclination to act surly that morning for he pretended to be interested at the sets and turned towards Calvin with an almost pleasant tone, “Problems with something?”

Calvin nodded his head quickly. “Yes, with the lights. We’re waiting for them to fix things up.”

There was another awkward silence before Chun gathered himself visibly and twisted around to face Ella. “Are you done with your lines? I know you’re starting filming tomorrow afternoon,” he sounded polite enough, if one ignored the guarded look in his eyes.

Ella looked startled at the amount of attention he was paying her. “Yes,” she glanced away. “Yes I am.”

Another pause.

“Well, I suppose I’d better leave now. I just wanted to say hi,” Chun pulled away from the company, looking a little sad, a little angry, a little disappointed.

Selina felt something twisting in her gut as she read the yearning and pain flickering in Chun’s eyes. “Be careful on the road,” she said quietly.

Chun flashed her a strained smile. “Thanks Selina, good luck with today.”

Calvin took a step forward, “I’ll walk you to your car?”

Chun’s first impulse was to decline the offer, but he reluctantly agreed when he saw the look of concern in his friend’s expression. “I’ll see you two around.”

Ella nodded slowly, but did not say anything else.

“Are you alright?” Calvin asked once they were out of hearing distance from the two young women.

“Yeah, I suppose I am. It gets a little easier every time. Maybe, after a few more meetings, it wouldn’t hurt anymore,” Chun forced a laugh.

They reached Chun’s black convertible. Calvin leaned against it as Chun got into the driver’s seat. “Drive safe. And no getting drunk, alright?” Calvin warned.

“I’d be afraid to,” this time the smile that appeared on Chun’s face was genuine. “Did I tell you that Arron came storming up to me the other day and shouted that if I dare to get drunk one more time, he’d burn up all my Michael Jordan posters? It’s enough to turn me off the booze for awhile.”

Calvin laughed. “He’s worried about you.”

“I know he is,” Chun sighed and stared down at his steering wheel. “I know you all are. I suppose I was acting selfish, not thinking about the three of you. But Arron literally shook me awake. What he said, or rather yelled in my ear, was right. Even if I couldn’t pull myself together for me, I should do it for Fahrenheit. I’ve been causing too much trouble lately, and it’s affecting everyone’s morale one way or another. I’m sorry.”

“Chun, we all know it’s a particularly difficult time for you,” Calvin pointed out. “Nobody has even thought to blame you for this.”

“I’ve had ample time to wallow in self pity,” Chun countered. “And you’ve all done more than enough for me. I simply can’t just spend the rest of my life pining away for things that have already left for good. Arron says I’m acting like a little old lady yearning for her long dead husband, that brat!”

“Yes, he’s rather inventive with his words, isn’t he? And he does tend to be overly frank, which can be pretty irritating if you’re not in the best of moods,” Calvin said in amusement. “But he makes surprising sense sometimes, no? Underneath all that ruckus he loves to kick up, there’s an odd twist of logic in there somewhere.”

Chun nodded, his fondness for the youngest member of Fahrenheit apparent in his smile. “Yeah, he does. Somehow. He’s a good guy, albeit a little immature at times.”

“You’d better not let him hear what you said. He’d never let you hear the end of it.”

Chun laughed once more. “Shh, it’ll be our little secret. Alright, I’d better get out of here.”

“I’ll see you around,” Calvin pushed the driver’s door shut and watched as Chun zoomed out of the parking lot with a parting wave of his hand.

Pretty short update, but the next post is going to be quite long. Well, longer than this at the very least.

And allow me to say this, *dangles hint*, the next two chapters are going to be some sort of a turning point for everybody. You know, things will happen that will galvanize other things into action. So stay tune! =D

Oh by the way, dolce bought this up (thank you for telling me by the way! I really appreciate it!) and I'm quite worried about it. It was happening with my OTSOF story too, although I swear I didn't do this on purpose.

Who here thinks CE's relationship is stealing the show, raise your hand! =p

At first, I thought to use Chun and Ella's falling-out to bring Calvin and Selina oh-so-subtly closer, but when I went back to reread, I found that I seem to be concentrating quite abit on them instead of Cal/Sel. Hmmm =________________=
