Chapter 14

Conspiracy

“I feel like I’m sneaking around behind Chun’s back!” Jiro said loudly.

“Oh shush, be quiet you. Just tell yourself it’s for his own good,” Hebe said irritably, annoyed at Jiro’s constant whining.

“But it’s like I’m betraying his trust or something! Don’t you feel the same way with Ella?” Jiro persisted with his complains.

“I, unlike you, know how to look at the greater good of things. I’m setting my sights in the long-run,” Hebe replied loftily. “Now be quiet!”

Jiro sniffed in annoyance but obligingly shut his mouth up.

The five of them, minus Wu Chun and Ella Chen of course, were gathered around in Calvin’s house, his being the most convenient place to meet up since Hebe and Selina weren’t comfortable having too many guys over at their place, and that both Arron and Jiro lived a little too far.

They were currently sitting at Calvin’s dining table, throwing ideas back and forth at each other.

“You know, what we really need is to remind Chun just how much he loves Ella,” Selina stated, fiddling with her glass of water.

“And how do you propose we do that? Chun is determined to lock out all thoughts of said female from his mind,” Jiro remarked unhelpfully.

Calvin sighed and slumped back into his chair. “You know what? Let’s just forget this whole thing and leave them both to wallow in their own misery peacefully. The more I think about this, the more I’m certain we’re going to fail rather dramatically.”

“Exactly!” Jiro said, looking relieved. “We should just forget about the whole matter and leave the two of them alone.”

Arron, who had remained unnaturally silent throughout the conversation, suddenly let out a squeal of mischievous laughter.

“What the hell?”

“Do you know what we should do?” he asked, amidst gasps of amused laughter. “We should get Chun to be on set when Cal does that bedroom scene with Ella! You’re doing it next Friday, aren’t you?” he turned to look questioningly at Calvin.

Thunderstruck looks greeted Arron’s announcement.

Calvin was the first one to shake himself out of his disbelief. “Arron Yan! That is the silliest, stupidest idea I’d ever hear!” he snapped.

“But it might just work, don’t you think?” Jiro was the next to snap out of his reverie. He looked like he was harbouring some very evil plans that he was relishing to put into motion.

“Wipe that smirk off of your face, Wang Da Dong. I don’t like it!” Calvin turned to growl at Jiro. “I thought you were on my side just two seconds ago?”

But Jiro and Arron had already conveniently isolated Calvin from their own private, little discussion.

“Look, Hebe said we needed to remind Chun of his feelings for Ella, didn’t she?” Arron asked excitedly. “And what better way to do that than to force him to watch another guy being all touchy-feely with her?”

“Arron!”

“You’re absolutely right! Chun will go ballistics! He’d be so jealous he won’t be able to walk straight!” Jiro predicted gleefully.

“Jiro!”

“Exactly! And this just might be enough to push him into action. Chun’s darn possessive, he won’t be able to stand any other guy around her. This just might prod him into going after her again!”

“Guys! I thought you two were dead set against the idea!” Calvin said in exasperation, watching incredulously as the two put their heads together in a joint effort to plot his early demise. “You’re supposed to be on my side! I can’t believe you’ve both switch sides so fast!”

“That was before we knew things would sound so exciting,” Arron said slyly.

“But still! Watching from the sides while I get ripped to pieces?”

“You won’t!” Arron said confidently. “Chun has already read the scripts, hasn’t he? He should know by now that you’d be doing a take like that with Ella. He won’t blame you.”

“I can’t believe this. Conspiring against me to conspire against Chun,” Calvin growled under his breath.

“Yeah. What we just need is for Chun to get jealous enough to realize he won’t be able to stand the thought of any other guy closing in on her. Hopefully, this will convince him to try again,” Jiro joined in happily, ignoring Calvin’s muttered complain.

“If that was supposed to make me feel any better, it’s not helping in the least,” Calvin looked extremely irritated.

“I think it’s brilliant!” Hebe, who had stayed silent as the guys argued heatedly over the matter, suddenly spoke up. “You two are brilliant!”

Jiro puffed up importantly while Arron accepted the compliment with a gracious smirk.

“Hebe! You’re not supposed to encourage this nonsense!” Calvin turned to glare murderously at her.

“What?” she blinked innocently back at him. “I don’t think this is nonsense. I think it’s wonderful.”

“Selina!” Calvin howled. “Talk some sense into them!”

Selina looked torn between the two extremes. “I don’t know…” she said hesitatingly. “It does sound like a pretty good idea.”

Calvin looked horrified that she was abandoning him to join their ranks.

“But we won’t do it if Calvin is unwilling to go through with the whole thing!” she added firmly, not liking Calvin’s cornered, helpless look. “He’s the one who is going to be at the receiving end of the fire, surely he deserves a say in the matter.”

Calvin looked relieved that someone was finally coming to his rescue.

“Awww but we don’t know how else to get Chun up and moving!” Jiro looked disgruntled that their beautiful plan was being to shot to pieces.

“But Calvin doesn’t look happy with it,” Selina chanced a glance at the guy in question, who looked like he wanted to throw all of them out on their asses for disrupting his peace with weirdly outrageous ideas.

After another hour of intense debate about the pros and cons of Arron’s proposal, it was with a heavy heart that Calvin agreed reluctantly to give the suggestion a shot.

“But I’m telling you all, you guys owe me a month’s worth of dinner!” he said darkly. “And if Chun beats me up for this, we’re upping the settlement to a year’s worth!”

Arron, Jiro and Hebe all nodded readily, already anticipating the drama that would break out next week. Selina just shot him a quiet, sympathetic smile in which he returned with a grimace of his own.
