Chapter 17

Collision

“Cut! That’s a wrap! Great job you two, absolutely wonderful!” Pete finally called out as cameras and machines slowly whirred to a standstill.

Calvin immediately lifted himself away from Ella, than collapsed on the bed beside her. “Thank god,” he groaned.

He felt so drained it was a miracle he had enough energy left over to even breathe.

“I want everything you can give, don’t hold anything back,” Pete had told them before the start of the scene. “The steamier, the hotter, and the more passionate you can make it, the better.”

And they had tried, how the both of them tried.

It was emotionally exhausting to have to keep yourself in a hypnotized stage for hour upon hour, take upon take, chanting continuously to yourself “I am in love with him/her. I am in love with him/her. I want to make out with him/her. I need to make out with him/her.”

In fact, Calvin tried so hard that for a minute there, it was a little difficult for him to discern truth from fantasy, a little difficult for him to pull himself out of his character.

“Calvin, you alright?” Ella sounded tired, but all the same she rolled over to express her concern.

Calvin lifted his head. “Yeah, nothing a good sleep won’t cure,” he tried a smile but his face felt numb from all the necking and kissing he had to do.

Ella nodded wearily.

Calvin reached out to brush a wayward lock of hair away from her face, looking slightly worried. “Your mouth looks a little swollen. Was I…being too rough just now?” his voice trailed uncomfortably away.

“Why Calvin, I do believe you’re feeling embarrassed,” Ella sounded amused as she reached out for the robe an assistant was handing over to her with a grateful smile. She wrapped it around herself with a tired sigh.

“Did I hurt you?” he persisted.

“No,” she waved away his anxieties airily. She stretched, than gasped and quickly dropped both her arms back down.

“What?” Calvin asked, startled by her cry of distress.

“Why is Chun here? No, don’t look!” she hissed when Calvin made to turn his head around. She ducked down and pretended to busily fiddle with the bed sheets around her, adjusting herself so that Calvin’s body blocked her partially from view.

Calvin, meanwhile, had stiffened warily.

Chun was here, damn. He had conveniently forgotten about the all-important ‘plan’, so wrapped up was he in his acting that it had completely slipped his mind.

Calvin sighed, mentally bracing himself for an ugly confrontation. He had said time and again, he didn’t think it was a good idea. But the others had been so caught up in the adrenaline rush of confidence that they hadn’t taken the time to slow down and really think about what would happen after they’d gotten Chun wound up.

This could only go two ways. Either Chun would blow up from his frustration and knock Calvin clean across Taiwan to the next continent, or he would quietly nurse his rage and coolly ignore him. Either way, it wouldn’t bode well with Calvin, and he knew it.

“Maybe he was passing by and decided to come in and take a look,” Calvin said, in answer to Ella’s earlier question.

“I don’t want to see him!” Ella said, looking distraught. “Not like this! Not when…” she looked at him, looked back at herself, than looked down at the bed. Her message was clear. She didn’t want to see him, not after she had been rolling around in bed with another guy.

“Like I do?” Calvin tried to laugh, but not so much as a squeak came out.

Ella did not look amuse. “I can’t face him like that. I barely have any clothes on!” she sounded miserably vulnerable.

“Look, just go change into something more decent. I’ll see if I can get Dong to steer him away or something, alright?”

“I…but he’d still be able to see…” Ella began to protest, but just as quickly changed her mind. “Alright,” she nodded, looking forlorn and resigned.

Male chivalry chose this moment to rear its head up from within, and he just couldn’t find it in himself to abandon Ella when she looked so upset. It was so tiring to always have to be the good guy, to be the one who had to look out for the others and take care of them. But what else could he do? It seemed an inborn thing, and as much as he hated it sometimes, the little voice inside of him was screaming insistently for him to help her.

“Or, wait right here. I’ll go get another robe for you alright? That way, you’d be covered enough so you can safely make your way back to the changing rooms.”

Liquid brown eyes shining with gratitude stared gratefully back up at him.

He got up and made his way to some racks where his own much-bigger robe hung. He grabbed it, hurried back to the bed and draped it over Ella’s shoulders, than reached out a hand to help her on to her feet. He knew he was playing with fire, rubbing salt into Chun’s already festering wound by acting like he was on such intimate terms with Ella, but he hadn’t been able to ignore her distress.

After making sure she was securely wrapped up, he squared his shoulders with a small sigh, than began making his way to the tiny little group who all this while had been standing at the sides, watching his every move.

There was a small, uncomfortable pause when he reached the assemble before Jiro broke it with an awkward “That was amazing, Cal.”

“Thanks,” he replied, his eyes straying towards Chun who was staring very hard at a couple of workers packing up their equipment.

“Yes, you did really good,” Hebe tried to get the conversation going.

“You know what? I just remember, I have something planned today,” Chun suddenly spoke up, his voice monotonous. “I’d better go.”

“Wait, you don’t have a car,” Jiro looked up.

“Taxi,” with that, he turned and abruptly left.

Oh great, Chun really was upset, Calvin groaned silently. It had been too much to hope for that he would brush this whole thing off lightly. Yes, Chun knew it was only an act, and yes, he knew Calvin was only doing his job. But it was only natural that he would feel jealous, and Calvin didn’t really blame him for being upset.

However, this really was all a little too much for the mentally and physically exhausted Calvin to handle. He was tired, he was wrung out, and now he had to contend with the fact that Chun was unhappy with him. So for the first time ever, since the day they met him four years ago, he shoved his displeasure at the little group with a slight, intimidating snarl.

“I hope you’re all happy with what you’ve accomplished today. Because god knows, I’m not!” he glared bitterly at them before turning on his heels to stalk away.

There was a collectively shocked pause at Calvin’s uncharacteristic outburst.

“Whoah, he’s mad,” Arron looked taken-aback. “I’ve never seen him so angry before.”

“This is turning out to be a bigger mess than I’d thought,” Jiro looked equally disturbed.

“Calvin,” Selina made as if to go after him but Arron gently pulled her back.

“Let him be. He’s understandably tired and pissed off right now.”

“But, he looked so furious! Surely you’re not going to leave him alone like this?”

“I’m sure he’d appreciate some time off to cool down. In the mean time, we can all go home, put ourselves in a corner and berate ourselves for thinking up such an utterly stupid, idiotic plan,” Arron said dryly. “Oh, and find some way to apologize to Calvin.”

Selina nodded after it was clear Arron wasn’t going to let her go. “I hope he won’t do anything silly. He looked so upset.”

“Of course he won’t,” Jiro hurried to reassure her. “This is Mr Sunshine Boy we’re talking about. He’ll be back to his goofy, happy self in no time. He was just tired.”
