“Neither Pete nor Leah or Joey was able to make it today, but they’ve more or less explained to us what we needed to tell you,” Jon spoke up.
The room remained deathly quiet.
Selina fiddled with her hair nervously, feeling suffocated under such a tensed atmosphere. In front of her, Calvin’s expression mirrored hers. He was playing with a pen, looking like he wished he was anywhere else but there.
“Well, ok…” Tony shuffled through the sheaf of papers he had with him. “So, the two additional characters, Dr Kyle and Jia Xin. We uhhh, we now know who will be playing them, don’t we?”
Another mutinous silence.
“Right. So the plot basically goes, Selina discovers she’s fallen in love with Calvin, and she is understandably upset because it was a foregone conclusion to her that her love would be an unrequited one. Then, Jia Xin played by Ella appears, further complicating matters. She shares a rather dodgy history with Calvin, and it is obvious that he still harbours some form of feelings for her.”
“Right around this time, Dr Kyle whom Chun will be taking on, appears. He’s another well-known doctor in the vicinity and he is instantly attracted to Selina. He learns of her feelings for Calvin, and tries his best to distract her when she feels down.”
“ Slowly, Selina comes to appreciate Chun's warmth and care. But just when they look like they’re about to get together, Calvin finds out that the feelings he had for Ella were actually more of a bittersweet yearning for their past together, and not really for the woman itself. He turns back only to realize how strong Selina's and Chun's relationship has grown, and this irritates him for reasons unknown to himself.”
“Then the usual bla-bla drama where the four of them gets entangled in a complicated love web, with Ella chasing after Calvin, who is somewhat expressing interest in Selina, who is utterly confused about the whole situation and Chun, who remains steadfast in his love for Sel.”
“Any questions?”
More silence.
“Oh for crying out loud, can somebody talk?” Jon said in exasperation.
Chun finally raised his head. “You both seemed to have forgotten to mention one tiny little fact,” he stated coolly.
Jon suddenly looked like he wished he had shut up.
“Tell her what the ending is. Go on. Who gets to end up with whom,” he gave a rough nod towards the general vicinity of where Ella was sitting.
Selina stared wide-eye back up at Jon while Ella looked wary. Fahrenheit had already gotten their hands on the whole script, but the two girls had yet to receive them. Hence, they had absolutely no clue as to how the story would end, other than that the two main leads were going to get together of course.
“Well…” Jon was obviously stalling for time, “Jayden of course, ends up with Ariel.”
Calvin looked like he wanted to dig a hole and bury himself right then and there.
“And well…and, umm, Kyle and Jia Xin get together in the end. In fact, they sort of like, you know, get married?” Jon’s voice trailed uncertainly away.
Ella turned paper white. “What?” was all she could manage.
“Yes, that’s right. The idea absolutely repulses you, doesn’t it?” Chun lashed out all of a sudden. “Utterly disgusting, isn’t it?”
“Chun…” Calvin said quietly, feeling helpless at the sight of his friend looking so pained.
Selina looked like she wanted to cry. She bit her lip and looked down, wishing the whole meeting could be over and done with.
Jon and Tony obviously felt the same way for they both leapt to their feet at once.
“Right, this marks the end of today’s meeting. We’ll be in touch!” Tony said hastily, frantically collecting up loose papers. Jon had already made a mad dash out the door.
Calvin stared in disbelief. Both their managers had just abandoned them on the spot. Unbelievable!
He turned back to assess the situation. Selina was still sitting quietly with her head bow. Chun was gripping his file so hard his knuckles were turning white. Ella looked both shock and forlorn.
Calvin felt a sudden pang for the woman. He didn’t know what had happened to make her fled from Chun so suddenly, but he knew she had to have her own reasons for doing so. Ella hadn’t been fooling around with Chun. He knew she had felt something for his friend. She wasn’t the type to collect boyfriends casually, than dump them when she felt bored of the games. He didn’t know what had made her retreat from the relationship, but he KNEW with absolutely certainty she wasn’t deliberately trying to be cruel to Chun.
Selina moved just then, reaching over to give Ella’s shoulders a comforting squeeze. Ella shook her head slowly, her eyes sad. A quiet, whispered exchange ensured before Selina looked up and flashed Calvin a forced smile.
“We’ll be leaving first then. We’ve got some other things lined up.”
Calvin nodded, returning her smile with one of his own. “Of course. Keep in touch?”
Chun and Ella remained grimly silent throughout the conversation, both looking anywhere but at each other.
Selina nodded. “I’ll see you online. We can discuss the movie then,” She gave a graceful goodbye wave before leaving the room with Ella.
“Damnit!” Chun snarled, sweeping pens and papers to the floor. He slammed his right fist on to the table, before slumping over it with a groan. “Why did I have to be such an ass?”
Calvin looked away, gazing to his right out of the window. He exhaled slowly. It was going to be a long two months. He had no idea how things would go once production for ‘Because of You’ start.
