I love him. I’ve loved him ever since I was 16 years of age. Raymond Lam, my long childhood and good friend. I’ve known him when I was 10 years old, and had fallen for him five years later. Now that I am 21 years old already, I still find myself loving him. Throughout those years, Raymond went out with many girls, although I do feel sad and a bit jealous sometimes, but I don’t really mind because for me, I don’t necessary have to be his girlfriend, as long as I get to be by his side then I’m pretty much satisfied already. But then recently, Raymond had fallen for this girl, and she happens to be one of my friends. He always talks about her, and the way he talks about her is different than how he talks about other girls. Her name is Tavia Yeung, she works with me, she’s the secretary of the boss, and I am one of the employees. She’s a beautiful lady who’s very smart and sophisticated. Raymond had asked me to help him win her heart, and of course I tried, but this time, in my body is boiled up with jealousy. I hate myself for doing so, but I just can’t help it. I don’t know what to do.
Right now I’m standing outside freezing my butt off waiting for that stupid Raymond Lam to come pick me up from work! I swear, he is always late, I don’t even know why I even like a person like him! I must be the foolish girl on earth, oh look, he’s here!
A guy wearing cool looking shades with a black sweater and blue jeans on parked his silver Porsche right in front of me. That indeed is my buddy Raymond Lam. After he parked the car, I immediately jumped into the seat next to him before I freeze to death.
“What took you so long?!” I complained to him
“Sorry, there was traffic. You know I didn’t want to.” Raymond said grinning at me
“Oh sure. You were probably in bed and forgot to pick me up AGAIN!” I shouted at his face
“Alright, I’m sorry; you don’t have to spit on my face!” Raymond apologized as he wipes his face. “By the way, where’s Tavia? Did you tell her that I want to ask her out on a date yet?”
“Jeez, calm down lover boy! I didn’t have the chance to tell her today.” I said quickly
“What?! I counted on you.” Raymond groaned
“Well, I really didn’t have the chance to tell her, we were all so busy today!” I replied
After hearing that, Raymond flopped down in his chair. I knew he was disappointed.
“I’m sorry, but I promise you that I’ll ask her tomorrow.” I said sympathetically
“You will?” Raymond asked as he got out from his chair and got closer to me
“Yes, I will.” I said slowly
“Promise?” Raymond asked once more
“YES!” I said out loud
“Great!” Raymond said cheerfully and he started driving
Raymond dropped me off at my place and then he drove back to his house. I live in an apartment with my dear mother, and there is only the two of us. I am an only child, and since I was six years old, my dad had left me and my mom all alone, and from then on, my mother was the only one who took care of me. I really love her because she means a lot to me. Without her, I probably wouldn’t be here today. When I got into my apartment, I went straight to my room, and suddenly I had the urge to look back old pictures. So, I walked to my closet and took out a big album containing lots of my good memories in it. I looked through them, and I find myself smiling through every page when I turn. Those great memories I can never forget. Then I came upon pictures of me and Raymond when we first went camping. That was also the day where I first started liking him. I could still remember in full details what happened…
It was five years ago when I was 16 years old and Raymond was 19. We were camping with a whole group of friends, also including Raymond’s best friend Ron Ng. I remember that the three of us were going up this big hill, and then suddenly I felt something slippery and before I know it, I lost my balance and rolled down the hill. Raymond caught my hand, but unfortunately he was dragged down too. We rolled and rolled and we finally stopped when we reached to the bottom of the hill. I was injured badly, my face, knees, arms, everywhere was scraped. I couldn’t even walk, but good thing Raymond was there to help me.
“If you can’t walk then I’ll carry you.” The 19 year old Raymond said
“Carry me?” I asked him shockingly
“Yeah, you can’t walk so I’ll carry you.” Raymond suggested
“But you are injured too, I don’t want to hurt you and then you’ll blame me for it!” I responded
“Hey, I’m a grown man! Of course I can handle this itty bitty job!” Raymond said confidently
“Well, if you insist.” I said
“Here, climb on.” Raymond said as he kneeled down in front of me
I carefully climbed on his back, and when I got on he started walking.
“I hope we can make it back to our camping place before it gets dark.” Raymond said
“Yeah, me too.” I replied
During the whole time, we didn’t say much, but at that moment I was starting to develop feelings for him. I felt so secure and safe when he carried me, and the pain was fading away so quickly. There was also this warm sensation in my body when I was carried by him. The feeling was nice, and the moment was perfect. I don’t think I can ever forget that day.
Alright, enough of this memory. I’m tired and sleepy, I’m going to bed.
In the morning
Okay, today is the day. The day where I will ask Tavia out on a date for Raymond. Probably is one of the hardest things for me to do, but I still have to do it, for the sake of Raymond. I’m currently in my desk waiting for Tavia to come, I feel a little nervous and scared, and this would be weird. Okay, here she comes; she’s walking into the lounge room. Alright, breathe Qian breathe.
“Hey Tavia.” I said happily
“Good morning Qian!” Tavia greeted back
“So, how are you this morning?” I asked
“Pretty good.” Tavia responded as she scooped a spoon of coffee mix into her mug
“That’s great!” I responded, still not getting to my point yet
“Is there something you want to tell me?” Tavia asked
And suddenly I felt relief. I’m always glad that Tavia is so smart, that way I don’t have to start things off. Hehe..
“Tavia, Tavia…you really read my mind.” I said grinning at her
Tavia laughed and then replied “So, what do you want to tell me?”
“Well, you remember my friend Raymond Lam right?” I asked her
“Tall dark skinned guy?” Tavia asked back
“Yup! That’s him!” I responded
“Ohhhhhh…yeah I know him.” Tavia replied
“Okay, well he kinda wants to ask you out..on..a..date.” I said slowly
At that moment I felt a little nervous, I really wish that she would say yes, and at the same time, I really wish she’d say no. Yes, because I didn’t want Raymond to be disappointed, and no, because I am jealous. Yeah, I admit it, I am jealous of Tavia. She’s beautiful and smart, who wouldn’t be?
“A date? He wants a date with me?” Tavia asked surprisingly
I nodded in agreement
“Sure, why not.” Tavia said out of the blues
“You mean it?” I asked. For a second there, Tavia sounded like she was being sarcastic.
“Yeah, Raymond seems to be a cool and nice guy. A date wouldn’t hurt.” Tavia responded
“Great! I’ll tell Raymond this wonderful news! I’m sure he’d be happy!” I said happily
“Great then. Oh by the way, when’s the date?” Tavia asked
“I’m not sure. I don’t think it had been confirmed yet, I’ll ask Raymond and then I’ll tell you okay?” I asked
“Awesome.” Tavia replied as she took her cup of coffee out to her desk
Phew! I’m glad that was over. It’s pretty much an accomplishment for me if I really think about it. I mean yeah, I am hurt in a way, but the most important thing is for Raymond to be happy and satisfied. I’ve done what I’ve promised, and he got what he wants. And everyone is happy. Now all I need to do is tell this good news to Raymond, I can’t wait till he jumps up and down.
“What?! Are you dead serious?!” Raymond shouted at me
“Yes, I’m serious. It really seems like she’s looking forward to this date with you.” I replied
“OMG! This is great!” Raymond said excitedly. I was right; he went jumping up and down again. But then there was something that he done right after that I never thought he’d done. He hugged me.
“Thank you so much Qian! You really are my good friend!” Raymond said happily as he threw his arms over me
“Yeah, no problem, but you don’t have to hug me this tight!” I said as if I couldn’t breathe
“Oh, sorry.” Raymond said as he lets go of the embrace “I couldn’t help it. I was too excited.”
I smiled at him and said “Yeah, I can see that.”
“But the thing is I don’t know WHERE to take her on the date!” Raymond shouted out
“Well for first dates, you shouldn’t go out to some place so fancy; it would be strange if you do. Just take her out on typical first dates you know, go to the movies, have dinner, long walks, and then maybe some ice cream for dessert. Those kinds of stuff, you know?” I suggested
“Hey, that’s not a bad idea! I’ll do that!” Raymond said “I owe you one”
“Just treat me to dinner and I’d be so grateful already.” I said grinning at him
“Sure.” Raymond replied
Alright, everything is settled and planned out now. It’s good to see Raymond smiling and so happy like this. Well, I better go call Tavia to tell her.
