As I look out the window, I could see the clouds so close to me, and through the clouds were the many cities of Hong Kong just right below me. Throughout my four college years, I was in New York going to college in NYU studying law. After the four hard years of college, I finally graduated and got my bachelor’s degree for law. But after this long six months of summer break, I have to go back and get my master’s degree. Now I’m coming back to Hong Kong to visit my two good friends and family. I really miss them, haven’t seen them since the last time I was in Hong Kong. I could still remember them, Raymond Lam and Li Qian. We’ve known each other since we’re practically babies. They will be picking me up at the airport today; I can’t wait to see them again. I wonder if anything changed about them. Alright, the plane is getting ready to land.
After the plane had come to its complete stop, I took my suitcase and got off the plane. When I arrived at the airport I looked around to see if I could find Raymond and Qian, but still no sight of them. Sigh…they’re probably late again. They never changed throughout these four years. So I’ve decided to go sit at a nearby café to wait for them. I ordered myself some black coffee just to keep myself awake. Those long hours in the plane were really tiring. I sat there at the table in the café by myself looking around at the people, I’m so glad to be back home in Hong Kong. As I sat there waiting, an old lady in her late 70s was walking close to my table and she had slipped and almost fell, good thing I caught her in time or else she’d land on to the floor. I told her to have a seat right next to me.
“Are you okay?” I asked the old lady
“Oh, I’m fine Thank you so much for saving me young man. Nowadays there aren’t such nice young men like you to go save a poor old lady like me.” The old lady said laughing
I gave her a smile in return and replied “You’re welcome. By the way, are you here all alone?”
“Oh no, I just came back from Canada visiting my daughter, now I’m coming back to Hong Kong, and my granddaughter picked me up. But just recently I’ve lost her. I don’t know where she went.” The old lady responded
“How old is your granddaughter, is she really young?” I asked curiously
“She’s not some little child, she’s around her early 20s, and she knows how to drive too. I don’t know how I could lose her so easily now that she’s this old!” the old lady said
“Well, maybe I could help you find her.” I replied
“Thank you so much young man. You’ve helped me so much already.” The old lady responded
“Don’t mention it.” I answered
“Oh never mind, there’s my granddaughter!” the old lady said pointing ahead
I turned over and saw a young lady in her early 20s, she had short hair highlighted with dark purple, and she had a fair looking skin color. She was wearing blue jeans along with a long stripped green and white shirt. Her face looked young and cute and was very pretty. I was amazed.
“Grandma!” The young lady shouted running over to the old lady right next to me “Where did you go? I was so worried when I came out from the bathroom.”
“So you were in the bathroom all this time? I thought I’ve lost you!” the old lady replied
“I told you that I was going to the bathroom and told you to wait for me. Your memory is getting worse each day grandma.” The young girl said
“It is, I’m sorry I got you worried.” The old lady apologized
“It’s okay, as long as you’re safe now.” The young girl replied. She then turned around to face me and said “And you are….?”
“Oh I’m Ron Ng.” I replied
“This is the young gentlemen who helped me before. I went all over looking for you, and when I passed by his table I slipped and he had caught me in time before I land to the ground.” The old lady said to her granddaughter “He’s really nice, he had also offered to help me go find you.”
The young girl flashed me a kind smile and said “Thank you so much.”
“Anytime.” I replied
“How about you come over to my house and we’ll treat you for dinner, I just want to thank you for helping me.” The old lady offered
“I really appreciate that offer, but I really can’t. I still have to wait for my two friends to pick me up.” I responded
“Oh, that’s too bad then.” The old lady said disappointedly “Well, it’s nice to meet such a kind and handsome young man like you today. Thank you again.”
“You’re welcome. And it’s very nice to meet you too.” I replied
“Well, Leila, we better be heading back home. I’m missing my bed already.” The old lady said to her granddaughter
Ohhhhh….so her name is Leila. Nice name.
Leila laughed then helped her grandma up and replied “Okay grandma, I’ll take you home.”
They started walking away from me, but then Leila turned around again and gave me another smile and I smiled back at her. Wow…she really is something.
In the meanwhile, I was just sitting there still thinking about Leila and how beautiful she was, then suddenly two loud screams had been delivered into my ears causing me to jump from my seat. I turned around, and surprisingly saw Raymond and Qian standing there in front of me laughing hysterically.
I stood up from my chair and shouted “Raymond! Qian!!”
Both of them ran up to me and gave me a big hug.
“Welcome back Ron! I’ve missed you so much!” Qian said with her arms still around my waist. She was still the same, so small and yet cute.
Raymond then gave me a pat on the back and said “Glad that you’re back Ron, we must feast tonight!” Raymond was also still the same. Tall, dark and handsome, he just got a bit fatter, that’s all.
“Yeah, we must! Raymond and I already reserved a Thai restaurant for this evening just for you!” Qian said as she lets go of the embrace
“I sure will feast out with my two good friends tonight, not even my parents will stop me!” I shouted
“Yeah, that’s the spirit!” Raymond cheered
I was so happy, so happy to see Raymond and Qian again. That evening, the three of us were all dined together at the Thai restaurant; I really had a great time.
“So Ron, did you go out with any girls while you were in New York? A handsome guy like you MUST have many girls following you!” Qian teased
“Yeah Ron, did you have any girlfriends? Don’t try to lie to us now..” Raymond added in
“Well once. It lasted about a year, but then things didn’t work out, so we split up.” I replied
“Ohhh, was she pretty?” Qian asked
“She had fair looks.” I replied
“Oh c’mon Ron, there must be other stuff about her that attracted you!” Raymond shouted
“I can’t remember, it was two or three years ago.” I responded
“Ron, you suck.” Raymond said quickly
Qian laughed and then said “Okay, enough Raymond. Today is Ron’s first day coming back home, we shouldn’t tease him that much.”
“Fine.” Raymond replied
After that we still had fun, the three of us talked about a lot of things, and I told them many stories I had during the four years I spent in New York. After that, Raymond dropped Qian at her place first, then he took me back to his apartment.
“From now on, you will be staying with me. You are my new room mate now Ron.” Raymond said
“Wow, nice apartment you have here!” I said amazed by all the cool things around his apartment “You really could turn something ugly into something nice. I remember that the last time I was here, you just bought this old apartment, and now that you’ve decorated all, it’s very nice!”
“Thanks Ron, it’s good to here you compliment me again.” Raymond said smiling at me “Here, I’ll show you to your room.”
I took my stuff and walked into my new room
“Welcome to your new room!” Raymond said as he opened the door into the room
Everything in there was all organized already. There was a bed, a closet for clothes, and a desk for me to put my laptop and everything else on. Everything I needed was already there.
“Wow Raymond, you did all this for me?” I said happily as I walked into my new room
Raymond scratched his head and replied “Yeah, also with the help with Qian. As soon as we got the news that you’ll be coming back, we immediately went to buy all these things for you! You should be grateful that you have such great friends like us.”
“I’ve always been grateful of you guys. I’ll have to treat you guys out to dinner sometimes.” I responded
“You bet!” Raymond replied “Well, it’s late, you must be tired today. I’ll let you rest.”
“Okay, thanks.” I said
I then went to take a hot shower to relax myself. And my body felt much lighter after the shower, I felt weightless. I climbed in bed and got myself all warmed up, and again, I find myself thinking about that young girl from the airport today again. Oh yeah, Leila, that’s her name.
