As I sat down on my chair next to the window looking outside with my mind still reminiscing about memories of Matt, a tear dropped had dropped down to my cheeks. I quickly wiped it away with my hand, it happens all the time. Whenever I think of Matt, I couldn’t help but shed some tears. Then there was a knock on my door, I know that it’s my grandma. I got up and went to open the door, and then I greeted her with a warm and loving smile.
“Hey Grandma, come on in.” I said closing the door behind me
“I’m just here to remind you about a few things. Tomorrow will be your first day at work; I just want you to be ready. Do you have your outfit chosen yet? And remember that it has to be a nice one, don’t wear clothes like what you usually wear, it’s too casual.” My grandma reminded. She was always so worried about me.
“Don’t worry grandma, I have everything ready.” I said smiling
“Good then, you don’t want to give bad impressions on your first day at work, or else they’ll fire you immediately.” My Grandma replied
“I know grams. I know.” I said
Tomorrow is my first day at work; I’ll be working at this company as a secretary of the boss there. It’s a law company, filled with lawyers. I’m thinking of being a lawyer myself after I graduate from college, this is just a job for me to get experience from.
Next Morning
I woke up early in the morning to get myself ready. I washed up, made breakfast for myself as well as for my grandma, and then I went into my room to put on my outfit that I just bought for my first day at work. I wore a black skirt that was up to my knee along with a white stripped red blouse with a collar and buttons. I slipped into nice black heels, and I also had a small hand bag. I put on mascara and a dab of lip gloss to keep it all natural. At last, I looked at myself into the mirror once more, and I am definitely ready.
I hailed a taxi then it drove me to my work place. When I got there, the place was very busy, so busy that they didn’t even have time to assist me. So then I just stood at the chairs near the assistant room. I waited for ten minutes already, but everyone was still busy. I had patience, so I still waited. Then suddenly a man walked passed me, but after seeing my face, he walked back and stood right in front of me, he then looked at me weirdly. He looked quite familiar though.
“Hey, I know you.” The man said looking directly at me.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think I know you.” I said quickly
“You don’t remember me? I was the guy at the airport who helped your grandmother. Remember?” the man said
I studied his face longer this time, and then suddenly I remembered.
“Oh yeah, I remember you now.” I said smiling lightly to him
He then sat down to the seat next to me and said “What are you doing here?”
“It’s my first day of work here, but unfortunately the people are too busy to help me at the moment, so I’m just sitting here waiting.” I said quickly
“Oh, what a coincidence! It’s my first day of work here too!” the man said happily. I didn’t understand why he was so excited about this, I sure wasn’t.
“Yeah.” I said quickly again. Honestly, I didn’t want to talk to him, I mean I barely even know him. Besides, I was more concentrating about my job, there’s still no one here to help me yet!
“I’m Ron Ng, by the way.” The man said taking his hand out
I looked down at his hand then back at his face, shook his hand and replied “Leila Tong.”
Suddenly, a man in suits walked up to me and said “Are you Miss Leila Tong?”
I was so happy; finally someone has the time to help me. I quickly brushed off that guy Ron’s hand, without saying goodbye I walked off with the other man.
“Yes, I am Leila Tong.” I answered
“Welcome here to our company. I’m Tony Szeto and I’ll be showing you around the whole company and I’ll also be showing you what to do.” Tony Szeto said
Tony gave me a tour around the whole company, and indeed it was huge. He showed me where each room is and what it is used for. Then he showed me to my desk which is right outside of the boss’s office. He introduced me to the boss, and he seemed pretty nice. Then he also showed me what I should and should not do. Everything was going well, and then I started working. There were loads of works already on the first day, although it was a lot, but I was fine with it. A lot of work will keep me from thinking of personal things and it helps me avoid the people. I honestly didn’t feel like talking to anyone. Like I said, things just changed after Matt’s death. I worked and worked, and time sure flies by. It was already 7:30 pm. Time for me to leave, I went outside to try to hail a taxi to get home, but unfortunately there wasn’t any at the moment. Suddenly I saw a black BMW parking right in front of me. The person in the car rolled down their window and stuck their head out. It was that guy from in the morning again, oh yeah Ron.
“Hey, need a lift?” Ron asked
“No thanks.” I said quickly as I looked out into the streets to find more taxi
“It isn’t safe for a girl to be waiting outside for a taxi this late. Why don’t you just let me take you home? I swear, I mean no harm.” Ron said
I ignored him, and still kept on looking for a taxi. Then at last I saw a bus right in front. Whatever, a bus is okay too, as long as I got rid of that annoying guy.
“Thanks for the offer, but I rather not.” I said then ran to the bus ahead.
I got on the bus and it drove away. I was so relieved that I finally got rid of Ron.
I was finally home after that long tough day at work. As soon as I got into the house, I called out for my grandma “Grandma, I’m home!” Then I turned over to the dining table, and on there was our dinner all ready to eat. There was fried fish, chicken, and soup. It sure looks delicious.
Seconds later, my grandma walked out of the kitchen holding two bowls of rice and she headed toward the dining table.
“Oh you’re home. How was your first day of work dear?” My grandma asked as she placed the two bowls of rice on the table and sat down
“It was pretty good; I had a lot of work though.” I responded
“Well that’s good, means you have more practice.” My grandma replied “Here, eat, you must be starving after your long day at work.”
“Sure!” I said happily as I took a chicken and put it in my rice bowl. “By the way grandma, guess who I saw at my work place today?”
“Who?”
“Do you remember that guy who helped you at the airport sometimes last week?” I asked
“Ohhh..is it that one very nice gentlemen?” My grandmother asked
“Yep, that’s him.” I replied “He seems to be nice on that day, but now I think he’s annoying.”
“Annoying? How so?” My grandma asked me in disbelief
“Well, he kept on asking me questions when I barely even know him, and he acts like he knows me so well. I don’t like people like that..” I said as I scooped some ice into my mouth
“Really? Maybe he just only wants to be your friend. Don’t be so paranoid Leila, I thought only old people like myself are, I didn’t know you youngsters are too.” My grandma said
“Well maybe I am, but it’s better to be cautious than not to. I still feel that he’s up to something.” I responded
After dinner, I washed the dishes then took a shower and off to bed I go. What a tiring day, I really need to sleep. But when morning comes, the day starts all over again, and then I’ll have to face Ron Ng again. He’s up to something, I can sense it. But what?
++Ron’s Quick POV
I’m so happy that Leila will be working with me from now on. I think I have this little crush on her; she’s so pretty and sweet. But today, she’s not so very sweet. Somehow she seems different from what she was at the airport. When I saw her at the airport, she seems to be so kind and sweet, but at work today, although she was pretty with her very sophisticating outfit, she acted a little weird. She was a bit cold, and she doesn’t really give very good impressions. There’s clearly something wrong, or maybe I’m just too suspicious? Maybe I am, she’s probably just having a bad day that’s why she was so grouchy. Yeah, that could possibly be it. Well whatever it is, she’s still the beautiful and sweet girl that I met at the airport last week. I wonder what will happen next…
