Chapter 9

Friends...for now

++Ron’s POV

I stayed at the hospital with Leila for the whole entire night. I didn’t want to leave her; I know that at this moment, she really needs someone beside her to care for her. And I’m hoping that I am the one she needs. The truth is, I only want to protect her, and I’m not doing this just to gain her love and attention, it doesn’t matter how she feels about me, I see her and I only want to protect her. Morning rises and I found myself sleeping on the chair besides Leila the whole night. I went to wash my face then came back to Leila, where I found her lying there with her eyes wide awake.

“Hey, you’re awake, how are you feeling?” I asked

“I’m fine.” Leila responded as she dragged herself up from lying. I came up to her and supported her to sit up. “Were you here the whole night?” She asked me

“Yeah…” I answered as I scratched my head

“Did I hurt you at all last night when I lost control now did I?” Leila asked

“No.” I replied

“I’m sorry for the way I acted, I just couldn’t control myself.” Leila explained

I then took the seat next to her and replied “It’s okay. Your grandma told me everything, about what happened to you in the past and about your…boyfriend.”

“Oh…” Leila responded

“And about your problem of how you can’t control yourself, I think it’s best if you go see a psychiatrist, they can help you.” I suggested

Leila then turned her head away from me and replied “I’m fine; I don’t have to go to a psychiatrist.”

“You’re not fine Leila, and you know it. You don’t have to be afraid, they will help you.” I encouraged as I looked at her face directly, but there was no expression coming from her whatsoever. “Please Leila; you wouldn’t want your grandma to worry about you all the time.”

“My problem is none of your concern.” She replied coldly

“Why won’t you let me help you?!” I shouted

“I don’t need you to care for me!” Leila shouted back as she turned over and faced me

“Stop lying to yourself Leila, I know that you’re very weak right now, and what happened in the past is still stuck with you. I just want to be there and support you.” I said as I calmed myself down

There was no response from Leila, and I stood there wordless. I too did not know what to say. Then I finally spoke up…

“So what then? What do you do when you know that maybe you can’t help?” I asked

“Leave.” Leila replied harshly

“Leila, please.” I said

“Leave now.” Leila said again. I could almost hear the sound of her crying as she said that to me.

“Fine. If you really want me to then I will. But I will come back to visit you.” I replied as I walked out the door. Before closing it, I looked at her once more, I saw her pulling the blanket over herself and she just lied there crying. I really wanted to come over and hug her, but she wouldn’t like that, so I closed the door and walked out.

Sigh…what can I do now? She’s in trouble and yet she won’t let me help her. I don’t understand why she doesn’t want people to help her, is it because she still doesn’t want to forget about her old boyfriend who had passed away?

I couldn’t think of any ways to help Leila, she was too stubborn. I decided to go back to my apartment to rest for awhile, when I got in the apartment; I found Raymond and Qian playing chess.

“Ron, you’re home!” Qian shouted at me

“Yeah.” I said carelessly

“What’s wrong Ron? You look so tired.” Raymond said

“Nothing, I’m fine.” I replied as I walk toward my room. Qian ran up to me and asked “Ron, tell us what’s going on.” She then dragged me to the couch where Raymond was sitting at, and the both of them were bothering me with questions that I can’t even answer. I was too tired and too angry to answer them.

“Ron, tell us.” Raymond nagged

“Yeah, tell us Ron.” Qian added

“Can you guys be quiet for a moment?!” I shouted angrily at them. The both of them looked at me in shock. I shook my head and realized how loud I shouted at them.

“I’m sorry, I’m just really tired.” I replied

“No, we’re sorry Ron. We keep on asking you questions, we were too nosy.” Qian pouted guiltily

“Yeah, sorry man. Why don’t you go in and rest.” Raymond suggested

“I don’t think I can get any sleep from the problem that I’m having.” I said

“What’s the big deal?” Qian asked curiously

“Okay, there’s this girl I like…” I said as Raymond cut me off. “Is it that girl from your work place?”

“Yeah.” I replied and continued, “She has this mental problem that was caused from her old boyfriend who died in a car accident almost two years ago, and she would lose control and hurt herself and others. I told her to go see a psychiatrist, but she doesn’t want to. I tried to convince her as much as possible, but she was too stubborn, she wouldn’t listen to me. Now I can’t even help her and I feel so useless.”

Raymond and Qian sat there listening to be carefully, they didn’t know what to do either.

“Well, I think you should give her some time. For stubborn people, the more you force them then the more they won’t do it. So, just take it easy. Spend more time with her so that she can feel safe with you, and she’ll probably listen to you later on.” Qian suggested

Hey, that’s not a bad I idea I thought to myself.

“I guess that’ll work.” I replied “Thanks Qian.”

“I’m glad I can help!” Qian replied with a grin

“Yeah, try to make her feel that she can trust you, she’ll listen. Girls are just like that, you got to take time with them.” Raymond said

“Yeah…” I agreed

The next day, I decided to go visit Leila again in the hospital. I made her some hot congee, hopefully she’ll feel better. When I got to her room, I knocked and I heard her soft voice from the inside replying “Come in.” I went in and saw sitting there.

“Do you mind if I sit next to you?” I asked

She seems to be in a better mood today, so that’s good. “Sure” She replied

I then took the chair and sat besides her bed.

“Hey, I’m sorry for my attitude yesterday, I shouldn’t force you.” I said suddenly

“No, I should be the one who apologize. I was being mean to you.” Leila said

“It’s okay.” I replied

“What’s that?” Leila asked pointing at the bag I was holding.

“It’s hot congee that I made for you.” I said as I took the bowl of congee out from the bag

“Ohhh…” She replied “You know how to cook?”

“Well, I live alone when I was studying in the states, and of course I have to eat, so I learned how to cook.” I replied as I hand her the bowl of hot congee

“Wow, it’s a surprise to see a guy like you who knows how to cook.” Leila commented

I laughed and asked “So, how’s the congee? I added some meat and ginger in there to add a little flavor to it, it isn’t good to just eat plain congee.”

“It’s really tasty.” Leila commented

After she was done, I put the bowl and spoon back into the bag and sat next to her. Suddenly she asked “Ron?”

“Yeah?”

“Why do you want to help me anyways?” Leila asked

I stood there looking for my answer, I didn’t want to say “because I like you” that would sound too weird.

“I’m concerned about you, you seem to be insecure, and so it makes me want to protect you.” I replied with a smile

Leila looked at me right in the eye and replied “There’s no one who wanted to help me when they knew that I had a mental problem, everyone acted as though I was some freak. Except you…you are the only friend that is willing to help me.”

“I don’t think you’re a freak. You are very normal when you don’t lose control.” I said

“And here you are trying to make me happy again. Thank you so much Ron.” Leila said smiling

“You’re welcome.” I replied

I looked at how she smiles and talks to me, and she seems to be a very nice and sweet girl. I don’t know why she always acts cold in front of others. It would be best if she always stayed like this. Her mood changes a lot, one day she’s mad and the next she’s calm, and then she’s happy, and then she’s sad. Even though she’s okay now, but I know she’ll have more ups and downs later on in her life if she won’t go see a psychiatrist now. I wanted to encourage her to see a psychiatrist again, but then I remembered what Qian told me. “For stubborn people, the more you force them then the more they won’t do it.” Right, I shouldn’t be forcing her.

“Ron, can you do me a favor?” Leila asked

“Sure.” I replied

“Can you take me out for a walk outside? I want some fresh air.” Leila said

I smiled at her and responded “Of course I can.”

I was happy that she was willing to walk with me; I never thought I’d have the chance. I guess she’s beginning to trust me and sees me as a friend now, which is a very good thing. We went outside and walked around the green grass, it was a beautiful day today. The sky was blue and the sun was shining brightly.

“It’s a nice day today now isn’t it?” Leila asked me

I looked up at the blue sky and replied “It sure is.”

“I wish everyday would be like this.” Leila said as she sat down on the bench nearby.

I sat down next to her and replied “Me too, it would ease all the tension that people have inside of them into a more relaxing mind.”

Then suddenly, Leila asked me “Do you have a girlfriend?”

“Nope, if I did, then I wouldn’t be here with you.” I replied

She turned her head away from me and looked down at the ground as her cheeks grew a bit pink.

“So, when can you get out of the hospital?” I asked her trying to change the subject

“I’m thinking by tomorrow, I mean I’m feeling a lot better now.” Leila replied

“Oh.” I replied. “Do you mind if I come pick you up?”

“If you’re not busy.” Leila responded

“I’m not busy, so I’ll come pick you up.” I said

Leila nodded in agreement.

Again, another silence surrounded us. Then I remembered that I have something to give her.

“I have something to give you.” I said

She turned around and looked at me surprisingly “You do?”

“Yeah.” I replied as I reached into my pocket and took a small jewelry box out and gave it to Leila.

“Thanks.” Leila replied as she open the jewelry box and widened her eyes as she saw the jewelry. “It’s beautiful.”

“If you’re wondering what it is, it’s a glass heart, I went shopping the other day and I saw this, and I thought that it would look really good on you so I bought it. The seller also said that this glass heart will give you good luck and all the happiness that you need.” I said

“Oh Ron, this is really nice, but I can’t accept it.” Leila said as she closed the jewelry box and hand it back to me.

“Why not?” I asked her

“It’s too valuable of a gift, and plus, you’ve helped me a lot already, you should give this necklace to someone else.” Leila said

“No, I want you to have it.” I answered as I hand her back the box, “Keep it… please?”

Leila sighed then took the box “Thanks.”

I was happy that she agreed to take it, because if she won’t accept it then I don’t know who else to give it too, and also, I really want her to have it.

“Well, I’m getting tired; you want to walk me back in now?” Leila asked

“Certainly.” I replied as the both of us head back to Leila’s room.

“I’m in the mood for something sweet.” Leila said while we were in the elevator

“Hey, me too.” I replied laughing “Feel like having some mochi?” I asked

“I’d love to; I really like the chocolate and strawberry ones.” Leila replied

“Great, I’ll go to the grocery store and buy some and we can eat it.” I responded

After taking Leila back into her room, I drove to the closest grocery store and bought chocolate and strawberry flavored mochis for Leila and I. When I was done, I head back to the hospital to enjoy the mochis with Leila. I really had a good time with her, it feels as though our relationship is developing more, then again, I don’t mind if we stay friends, as long as she’s happy.
