Chapter 2

“Raymond, abandon plane!” Bosco screamed into the communication device, as his heart pounded hard against his chest. It was the only way out now for Raymond.

But from what Bosco saw, Raymond was not exactly doing what he wanted him to do. Instead, Raymond seemed to be trying to control his plane and direct it towards the warships below.

“Flight Sergeant 9009, I command you to fasten onto the safety bag and abandon your plane right now!” At that moment, it was Michael’s voice which boomed over the device.

Soon, it was evident to Bosco on what Raymond was attempting to do. Watching Raymond’s aircraft descending towards the two warships below at a rapid speed, Bosco saw a miniature figure leaping out from the plane, and subsequently disappeared into the waters. The plane rammed itself into the warships and they burst into flames from the huge impact.

“Mission X-GN accomplished! Platoon, head back to the airbase in sequence!” Michael ordered, as Bosco took one last look at the wrecks floating around the Atlantic Ocean. He need not worry, because he knew that Raymond would be rescued within minutes.

“Basically he’s fine, since there’s no internal injuries sustained. A dislocated right arm, a broken head and left leg, and he twisted his neck. He will need plenty of rest, and try not to move around as much as possible.” The doctor spoke to Bosco after completing his examination on Raymond.

“Thanks, Dr. Smith,” Bosco said, before taking the seat beside Raymond’s bed, “How are you feeling?”

“Still pretty much alive,” Raymond chuckled before he felt pain in his neck when doing so, “Ouch! This is great! I can’t even laugh now.”

Bosco giggled at his sarcasm, “A great start to your flying career too.”

“Where are the others?” Raymond asked.

Bosco’s expression turned solemn before answering, “Randy went down. I saw his plane exploded into flames. Michael is now talking to his family. The others are fine though. Michael asked you to rest well. We won’t have any assignments until further notice. ”

“Then I can have some peaceful rest first,” Raymond shut his eyes, trying to take his thoughts off his dead comrade, “Maybe I can have some fun time here too…”

“What do you mean by that?” Bosco was being successfully distracted away by Raymond’s words.

“Did you see the nurse attending to me just now?” Raymond flashed a mischievous grin at him.

Bosco nodded his head, “You mean Miss Wu? What about her?”

“Pretty, isn’t she?” Raymond winked at his friend, before finally returning to his sleep.

Bosco smiled. Well, he had to agree with Raymond.

She was indeed beautiful.

“Myolie?” A nurse walked over to the lady.

Myolie turned around and smiled. The nurse was the overall in-charge of the other volunteer nurses, and standing beside her was a man. She remembered him as the injured pilot’s friend whom dropped by a few days ago.

“This is Bosco Wong. He used to be in the First Aid team of the Airforce. He wished to volunteer his services here for now. Is it possible that I leave him to you?” The head nurse asked.

“No problem,” Myolie smiled and shook Bosco’s hand, “Myolie Wu here.”

Bosco swore that was the most angelic smile he had ever seen, adding on to the fact that she looked pretty in the nurse’s uniform. He blushed to a crimson-red as she looked into his eyes. As Myolie took him around the camp and explained to him the procedures and things to look out for, Bosco found that the medical tent looked sufficiently equipped even though it did not look like it. Halfway through the tour, Bosco caught sight of Raymond sitting in a wheelchair and joking around with a few nurses near his bed. He thought he heard a snort coming from beside him, and turned around to find Myolie making her way towards Raymond and the group of nurses.

“Er-uhm,” Myolie cleared her throat to indicate her presence, “Are you feeling anywhere unwell, Mr. Lam?”

The group of nurses mumbled that they got work to do and quickly dispersed off.

“Selena! Remember about our date tonight!” Raymond shouted out gleefully, whilst Selena quickly nodded with embarrassment and returned to her work.

“A date?” Myolie stared at Raymond in disbelief, “From what I see, you’re still advised not to move around unnecessarily, Mr. Lam, unless you wish to have your neck twisted or leg broken once more.” The ending of her sentence sounded more like a threat from her instead. After that, Myolie turned around and told Bosco that he could approach her if he had any questions during his course of work, and then she gave a last glare at Raymond before walking off to another patient.

“Tough girl huh?” Raymond commented, before breaking into a wide smile, “But I love her attitude, even though I’ve a feeling she doesn’t seem to like me much. Well, I was just playing around with her the other day when she attended to my wounds, but she thought I was some perverted psycho.” With that, Raymond broke into a soft laughter at the thought of Myolie’s bewildered expression.

When Raymond did not hear any response from Bosco, he tried to tilt his head up and looked at Bosco, whose eyes were kept focused on Myolie, and he was apparently lost in his own little world.

“Hey,” He hit lightly on Bosco’s arm, “What’s so interesting to see?”

Bosco snapped out from his daze, and tried to cover up through a weak laughter, “Ha nothing. I’m just looking around. So how are your injuries?”

“I can’t wait till I get rid of this wheelchair,” Raymond complained as Bosco helped him onto his bed, “And then, let’s have a game of baseball. I lost to you the previous time. I want my revenge, Bosco Wong.” Raymond tried to sound evil. “By the way, what are you doing here with that tough nurse?” He asked out of curiosity.

“Oh, I’m doing some volunteer work since we won’t be called back so soon,” Bosco answered as he examined Raymond’s bandages, “Are you interested as well? You’ll be a popular hit among the female doctors, nurses and patients.”

“We shall see.” Raymond grinned as a plan suddenly popped up in his mind.

[A Month Later]

“Alright, your injuries have mostly healed, Mr. Lam,” Dr. Smith did a final check before telling Raymond, “You just have to be back to change the bandage cast for your arm three days later. Just look for Myolie, and she’ll do it for you.” After saying that, Dr. Smith retreated to continue his rounds.

“Don’t miss me when I’m gone.” Raymond smiled cheekily at Myolie, whom returned him a cold glare instead.

Apparently, her opinion of Raymond had failed to change, despite numerous efforts of sweet-talking from him and trying to get into her good books by listening to her instruction of not moving around unnecessarily. She would merely ignore him, or if she wanted him to shut his mouth, a cold glare from her was sufficient. On the other hand, Myolie felt that Bosco was different from Raymond. Their personalities were poles apart from each other. Bosco was soft-spoken and mild-mannered, but most importantly, she admired his compassionateness and patience with the people here, although she found him to be quite a bore sometimes when they were in a conversation.

“You can leave now.” Myolie said in nonchalance, and proceeded onto the patient lying opposite Raymond.

Raymond shrugged, and picked up his bag, going around looking for Bosco, before he chanced upon Selena at another pitched tent.

“Gosh Ray, have you recovered already?” Selena ran up to him and asked.

“Yeah.” Raymond answered, whilst his eyes continued to spot for Bosco’s presence.

“I forgot to thank you about the previous time. I managed to successfully persuade my elder brother to move onto a safer location without me first. If it had not been for your advice and support, I may not be able to continue staying here to help others out.” Selena said, referring to the ‘date’ which Raymond shouted out to her the last time.

“Oh it’s okay, and don’t worry, my lips are sealed,” Raymond assured with a smile, before he spotted Bosco, “Got to run now. Talk to you another time perhaps.”

“Where are you staying now?” Raymond asked Bosco as they sat down under a huge, shady tree and ate their lunchboxes.

“In the Red Cross staff dorm,” Bosco answered, “I’m sharing a room with five other people.”

“Geez, but oh well, since it’s already so crammed, you guys don’t mind another one in there, am I right?” Raymond suggested.

Bosco contemplated for a while before nodding his head, “Yeah, you’re free to join us, provided that you help out here.”

“Why are you so prejudiced against Raymond?” Selena asked, “I think he’s a pretty nice chap.”

Myolie rolled her eyes, “It’s so obvious he loves the attention showered on him by ladies. And it so happened that you’re one of his victims too. Didn’t both of you go on a date before? So what happened after that? Did he dump you?”

“Haha I think you misunderstood his meaning, Myo. We didn’t exactly date. I just needed his help in something, and he gladly did it. What are you thinking about?” Selena laughed.

Myolie scratched her hair in embarrassment. Even if it was a misunderstanding, she still did not like his flippant attitude, recalling that dirty joke he cracked on her in the past.

“Whatever, I don’t care about this dude,” Myolie shrugged her shoulders before picking up her medical kit, “I’m off for house visits, Selena.”

“Alright Mrs. Pert, remember to take your high BP medicine on time. If you still feel unwell, please drop me a phone call.” Myolie said smiling, before she bade farewell.

It was the final stop of her house-visit round for tonight. She hastened her footsteps back towards the medical camp, as the street was virtually empty, having only a few households remaining behind. Most of the occupants had already evacuated to safer areas when the war began, and those whom stayed behind were mostly elderly folks, thus the Red Cross would send some personnel to do regular medical checks on these old people. All of a sudden, a group of four burly men jumped up in front of her out from nowhere. She could smell the strong stench of alcohol from these street ruffians. Backing away from them, these ruffians let out sinister sniggers as they closed in on her, giving her no way to escape at all. Her eyes darted around the area, hoping that there would be someone to rescue her.

“Hey pretty lady, how come you’re alone tonight? Need some company?” The leader stretched his hand out towards Myolie’s face.

Myolie retaliated back by using the medical kit to hit the man’s hand away from her, causing him to yelp in pain.

“Get this bitch!” He yelled out to the other three men.

Immediately, three pairs of hands seized her arms, as she struggled to be free. Frightened and nervous, Myolie began screaming for help, hoping that this last resort would work. The leader approached with an evil smirk, as he began to raise his hand to slap Myolie across her face.

“Hi, are we having a party here?” A familiar figure popped up behind one of the men, as the leader temporarily shifted his attention to the source of the voice.

The four men turned around to see a man standing there with one of his arms in a bandage cast. They began laughing out loud at the sight of him.

“Raymond Lam?” Myolie muttered out his name, as she looked on at him desperately.

“Get lost, you maimed idiot! She’s ours! Go find one of your own elsewhere!” The leader snarled at him.

“Oh no, she’s mine. At least for tonight.” Raymond retorted back, as he walked closer towards them, and unexpectedly, he swung his free arm hard onto the side of the leader’s head, knocking him over.

The three men released Myolie at once and charged at Raymond together. With little effort, those three men were sprawling on the ground grimacing in pain. Walking over to the leader, Raymond bent down to see him eye-to-eye directly.

“Channel your energy to do something more meaningful like joining in the army and fight off our enemies, instead of bullying people weaker than you here. Do you get my words?” Raymond warned sternly.

The leader nodded his head timidly, as the four men quickly got up and made their way off in another direction.

“Are you alright?” Raymond asked, as he picked up the medical kit which dropped onto the ground.

Myolie nodded her head, before muttering inaudibly, “Thank you.”

“Oh well, it’s just like doing some stretching out exercises. It’s been a long time since I last worked out.” Raymond replied with a goofy smile.

She laughed softly at his answer. He had just made her fear subside away with that silly reply he gave.

“How come you’re here?” Myolie asked, as both of them walked back to the medical camp together.

“Hmm,” Raymond hesitated for a while, “Selena told me. I thought about springing you a surprise. But why are you alone? The street isn’t safe at this time.”

“Oh, actually I got a male companion but he quitted a few days ago, and there’s no replacement available yet, so I don’t have much of a choice.” She explained.

“Well, there’s a most suitable candidate right beside you now,” Raymond turned and winked at Myolie, “Don’t miss this chance.”

She chuckled, “Yes, it’ll be great.” While in her heart, Myolie was starting to change her view of Raymond. He did not seem that bad after all. It was probably his over-friendliness which sometimes might indicate that he was not serious.

Bosco was tending to a patient when he saw both Raymond and Myolie arriving back to the medical camp chatting and laughing together. “When did they become so friendly with each other?” Bosco wondered as he watched them retreat into another tent where the cafeteria was situated in.
