“What the hell are you doing?” Bosco demanded as Raymond continued to stuff his clothes from the wardrobe into the luggage bag.
Raymond had returned to the dorm in a solemn mood, and refused to answer any of Bosco’s questions, just packing up his belongings with the intention to leave this place immediately.
“Raymond Lam!” Bosco could not take it further, and snatched the luggage bag away from Raymond’s touch.
However unexpectedly, Raymond charged at Bosco in fury, pushing him against the wall by grabbing hold of his shirt’s collar. Their faces were of a close proximity from each other. None of them spoke for several minutes, and gradually, Raymond’s glare began to soften as he let go of Bosco and stepped back from him.
“What happened?” Bosco asked meekly, afraid that he might agitate Raymond again.
“Don’t you find Myolie behaving a little different towards me ever since I came back?” Raymond asked, as he returned to packing his stuff.
Bosco was still uncertain of the crux of Raymond’s erratic behavior but he guessed it had to do with Myolie anyway.
“I don’t feel it that way. I can tell that she still cares for you. She has been…” Bosco stated his opinion.
“Yes, I know she cares for me,” Raymond interrupted whilst Bosco was still talking, “But that’s different from loving me. When I returned, I thought Myolie and I can be together once again, but somehow, there seemed to be some invisible barrier between both of us. I can’t feel the passion from her anymore. Initially, I presumed it’s because we haven’t seen each other for a long time, but it turns out that it’s not the case.”
“Then what is it?” Bosco could now feel his heartbeat accelerating each minute as he waited for Raymond’s answer.
Raymond looked up and turned towards Bosco, “It’s you – my best friend.” Walking up towards him, he did not take his eyes away from Bosco, “My best friend stole the girl away from me, am I right?”
Bosco did not answer his question. He could not bear to say it. Now, Bosco seemed to understand the dilemma Myolie had gone through when she faced Raymond.
“Why?” Raymond could feel the tears in his eyes, as he felt upset about being ‘betrayed’ by his best friend, “Why is the guy you? Can you please tell me why, Bosco?”
Bosco shook his head rapidly and attempted to explain, “I’m sorry, Raymond. I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to. We thought you were dead. Myolie and I only started being together a month ago. We never knew you could still be alive.”
“Get away from me!” Raymond pushed Bosco away from him when he tried to approach Raymond, “If you hadn’t been my best friend, I swear I would’ve punched the hell out of you! From now on, we’re no longer friends anymore, Bosco Wong.”
When Raymond flung open the door, he saw Myolie standing outside looking terrified and shocked. Apparently, she had rushed over to the male staff’s dormitory after hearing what Nancy had told Raymond. Having heard the two men’s argument, Myolie had no idea how to interfere because she was at a loss as well.
“Ray…” Myolie started to speak in a soft, concerned voice when her eyes wandered onto Raymond’s luggage bag, “Where are you going?”
Raymond took one last look at Myolie, before striding off with his luggage bag. He found himself unable to face Myolie a second longer, because he could only feel disappointment and hurt welling up inside him. It was painful, more painful than having the scar on his face.
“Get him back. He’ll only listen to you now.” Bosco mumbled weakly at Myolie before shutting the door behind him, as he sat down on his bed, burying his teary face in both hands.

“Ray! Please stop now!” Myolie ran after Raymond, whom was walking far ahead of her already, “Can you plea-?” Before she could complete her sentence, Raymond heard a loud thud.
Turning around, Raymond saw that Myolie had fallen down on the ground after tripping over a stone. She seemed to be in pain, he thought. Hesitating for a minute, Raymond finally decided to go over to Myolie to check if she was alright.
“Your knee’s bleeding already.” Raymond noted as he opened up his bag and retrieved a clean towel to press on the wound on Myolie’s knee.
She grimaced softly as Raymond carefully stopped the bleeding. Looking over at Raymond, Myolie began feeling guilty over hurting Raymond, because she found that her love for him was now all in the past. Her feelings for this man had started to change the moment she decided to love Bosco a month ago. When he returned ‘from the dead’, Myolie naively assumed that they could carry on their relationship from where they last stopped, because it was like God had decided to give both of them another chance to love and cherish each other again.
“Raymond, I’m truly sorry.” Myolie finally gathered up her courage to tell Raymond that.
However, Raymond did not seem to be able to accept the fact that Myolie had changed heart already. He pretended not to hear it, and continued treating Myolie’s knee wound.
“Raymond…” She spoke again.
“Shut up!” He found these two words slipping out of his mouth unconsciously before a tiny bit of regret began sinking in his heart when he saw the shocked expression on Myolie’s face, and this time his tone did soften, “What are you sorry about? For lying to me all this while that you still love me? Or is it because you’re so in love with my best friend now?” Taking the advantage that Myolie remained silent as she looked at him guiltily, Raymond continued, “You’re the reason I’m still alive today. Myolie, loving you kept me alive back then. Because I knew that you would be upset; I knew that you might wait for me; I made a promise before to come back for you……But why? Why are you doing this to me? Why must it be my best friend?”
Myolie took hold of his hand instinctively, “Bosco and me never wanted to hurt you, Ray. We never expected you to be still alive. When you disappeared back then, I was really upset, yet angry as well. I blamed God for taking you away from me. I started to lose interest in everything, including my life. I just wanted to see you for one last time, because I had so much to say to you. And then, a chance came by. I could just end my life then and reunite with you in another world. I really wanted to die at that moment of time…but…but Bosco…he pulled me back. He told me that there were many things in this world which were still worth living for. Bosco pleaded with me to treasure my own life. He asked me to continue living for the sake of you.” Unknowingly, Raymond had already begun shedding tears silently after hearing Myolie’s words, as she continued talking, “You said that I was the reason which drove you on when you’re trapped in Germany. But it’s Bosco whom kept me alive till today. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. He gave me a new leash of life, Raymond, and I was able to start all over again.”
Raymond could not take it any longer. He knew what she was going to say next. He took his hand away from hers, and wanted to run away, but she was a step quicker than him.
“I love him, Raymond.” Myolie admitted, “I know I shouldn’t say this to you, but I can’t bring myself to lie to you.”
Raymond did not turn back to look at her. He was already crying so badly, and could not stop himself from doing so. Biting on his lower lip, his hand moved swiftly to wipe away the tears on his face. After a long moment of silence, he finally spoke.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have come back at all. Maybe I should have just died right then.” With that, Raymond picked up his luggage bag and left the medical camp.

[The Following Morning]
“Myolie, wake up! Myolie Wu!” Selena nudged her friend.
Myolie grumbled in annoyance. It took her a long time last night to fall soundly asleep, and now, she was being disturbed awake.
“What is it?” Myolie sat up and questioned with a frown.
“I heard from the head nurse that Bosco had quitted from Red Cross Voluntary Team. Well, okay…Maybe you would’ve already known about it…” Selena suddenly felt like she was making a big hoo-ha out of nothing, since she now thought that it was reasonable for Myolie to know about Bosco’s affairs.
“He what?!” Myolie sounded shocked, and was immediately awake.
Selena tried to ensure that she did not send the wrong message over to Myolie, “Bosco…He left this morning. I heard that he’s on his way to Portsmouth on a mission for the Airforce, don’t you know?”
“Damn him.” She cursed under her breath before donning a winter coat, and rushed straight down to the male staff’s dormitory.
Myolie combed through the entire medical camp, but there was no sight of Bosco. He had left without a word already. Just as she was trying to catch her breath near the entrance, she saw Raymond standing a few meters outside the camp, gazing absorbedly at her. He looked like he had a sleepless night as well, she thought. Raymond had a bicycle beside him, as he approached Myolie.
“I’ll take you there. Bosco’s train doesn’t leave till twenty minutes later.” Raymond said mildly.
Myolie felt extremely grateful towards Raymond. She did not know how to thank him for that. Hopping onto the bicycle behind Raymond, she held onto his waist as he whizzed down the streets towards London’s train station.

[Train Station]
Raymond naturally grabbed hold of Myolie’s hand when they arrived at the train station. After checking the train schedule with the ticket counter, he led Myolie through the crowd to the platform where Bosco’s train would be at. All Myolie did was to follow Raymond closely behind, as she grasped back onto his hand tightly, lest she got separated from him.
“Here it is. He’ll be in there.” Raymond finally said, pointing to the board which read ‘Platform 10’.
Myolie smiled in relief when he managed to find it for her. At that moment, both of them began looking down at their pair of hands which were holding onto each other firmly. Raymond silently took in a deep breath, before gradually letting go of Myolie’s hand, and then looked intently at her.
“Quick, before he’s gone.” He managed to say it out.
Myolie mumbled, “Thanks, Ray.” And she disappeared into the crowd.
Raymond stood there listlessly, watching her go. He had been trying his best to suppress his feelings, but he could not take it any longer. His tears started streaming down his cheeks uncontrollably, blurring the vision before him. He had chosen to bring Myolie voluntarily here after learning from another colleague in the Airforce that Bosco was setting off for Portsmouth today, and he was aware that Myolie would definitely be looking frantically for Bosco. It took him so much courage and effort to finally let go of her hand earlier on, because he knew once he did that, she would never return to him again.
“Goodbye.” He said it silently in his heart before turning to leave the train station.
Bosco was sitting on the bench, deeply engrossed in his own thoughts, before he heard the whistle of the train, which indicated that everyone should be boarding now. Putting on his pilot cap, Bosco stood up and took his bag, walking towards the train.
“Bosco Wong!” Myolie yelled out at the top of her voice.
Bosco turned around, and was surprised to find Myolie just right behind him. Why had she come here? Looking around, he thought that he would see Raymond as well.
“Where are you going? No, I mean why didn’t you tell me where you’re going?” She questioned breathlessly.
“I…” He did not know how to respond, “I didn’t see the need to.”
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“Raymond needs you now,” Bosco replied before taking in a deep breath, “I’ve always seen Raymond as my elder brother, Myo. When I saw how hurt and upset he was last night, I felt really bad. I was angry at myself. How could I hurt someone who’s like a family member to me?”
“Then what about me? What about yourself?” Myolie demanded.
“I’ve made my decision already,” Bosco said before whipping out his ticket and gave it to the person-in-charge, “I wish for both of you to be happy.” With that, he boarded the train, leaving behind an extremely disappointed Myolie.

[1 Year Later, Early February 1943, Portsmouth Military Training Base]
“Bosco! Captain Lincoln is looking for you in his office!” Someone called out.
Bosco, whom was in an airplane doing repair works, popped up from underneath and gave the person a thumbs-up to acknowledge his call. Taking off his dirty gloves, Bosco proceeded to the captain’s office, wondering what it was about. The year had passed by faster than he thought. Although there were times when he started missing both Raymond and Myolie, he still stood by the decision he made back then.
“Sir, are you looking for me?” Bosco knocked on the door and entered.
“Yes, I wish to introduce some new officers whom will be joining us for our next operation. Patrick and Henry from Birmingham, and Raymond from London.” Captain Lincoln said with a big smile, as Bosco met these new faces, until his eyes fell upon the last officer.
“Flight Sergeant Raymond Lam will be partnering you in this operation. Since both of you came from London, I bet you guys should know each other, am I right?” Captain Lincoln continued.
Bosco had not recovered from the surprise yet, so it was Raymond whom answered, “Yeah, we’re on pretty good terms, I guess.”
After that, another four more pilot officers came into the office, and they started analyzing the operation taking place three days later. Time was tight, and they had to prepare themselves very readily since this operation was somewhat different from the previous ones, because for this time, their flying skills would not be of much use.
“No, you’re doing it wrong, Sergeant Wong. It’s this way.” The ammunition expert corrected Bosco’s method of loading his automatic gun, “Yes, carry on practicing.”
On the other hand, Raymond did not need much training on that. He was an expert in ammunition, since it was his favorite aspect during his student years in the military school. As such, he, Bosco and the others were responsible for infiltrating into the underground army base near France, and jungle warfare was the main tactical method they would be using.
“You’ve to click on this first.” Raymond pointed out to Bosco, before demonstrating it to him once again.
Bosco nodded his head, “Thanks.” And this time, he did it right.
Soon, night fell. Bosco was still out there, continuing his repair works on the damaged airplanes. He was trying to take his mind off the operation, and Raymond as well.
“Hey you.” He recognized it as Raymond’s voice.
Appearing from beneath, Bosco felt a little awkward facing Raymond privately. After all, Raymond had broken off his friendship with him a year ago. As much as Bosco wanted to make up with Raymond, he felt that he did not have the ‘face’ to do so.
“Yes?” He asked.
“What are you doing here late at night? We’ve a training session early tomorrow morning.” Raymond questioned with a nonchalant expression.
“I’m turning in soon.” Bosco said, before looking down on the ground.
“I was just wondering a while ago, how long have we known each other?” Raymond started examining the airplane which Bosco was repairing just now.
Bosco thought for a while before replying, “17…17 years.”
“Yeah, 17 long years,” Raymond commented, before retrieving something from his pocket and handed it to Bosco, “Myolie asked me to pass you this.” Seeing Bosco’s confused expression, Raymond continued, “It’s a friendship band. Myolie made it herself. Look here, I’ve got one too.” With that, he flashed it proudly at Bosco.
“I…” Bosco wanted to speak, but Raymond cut in, “I’m tired already. Goodnight!” And, Raymond walked off back to the dormitory.
Bosco spent the night staring at the friendship band. A warm feeling seemed to fill his heart when Raymond gave this to him on behalf of Myolie. Putting it on his right wrist, Bosco felt a sense of happiness in him after such a long time.

[3 Days Later]
Raymond was planting the bomb devices on different areas of the underground army base, whilst three other soldiers including Bosco were keeping a lookout. He still had five minutes more to complete his task. This underground army base was an important strategic location for the Germans, since their food and ammunition supplies were mainly stored in this area for the war taking place in France. It was a difficult task to infiltrate into this heavily-guarded base, and they had a limited time period to fulfill their task before the reinforcements arrived.
“1 more minute.” Henry reminded gravely.
Bosco thought he heard multiple footsteps approaching their area. Clutching tightly onto his rifle, he aimed it straight at the door, preparing to shoot anyone whom entered.
“Done.” Raymond reported, but at the same time, the door swung open, as tens of German soldiers charged in and began firing at these intruders.
“Retreat now!” Henry commanded, as they began moving back to their designated escape route whilst exchanging fires with the enemies.
They had to be quick, before this entire place blew up. However, even though they successfully ignited the underground base, their retreat proved much more difficult than they had imagined. After meeting up with the other team-mates whom had also completed their tasks in other areas, they felt that they should split up in pairs and gather at the jetty where their rescue boat would be waiting for them.
“Come on, Bosco! We need to be fast!” Raymond urged him, as they navigated around the jungle.
However, there was no response from Bosco, and Raymond stopped to turn around. Bosco was on the grass, clutching onto his left thigh in pain. He had been shot twice earlier on, but he was unaware of it until he tried to run after Raymond.
“Damn.” Bosco cursed under his breath as he tried his best to stand up again.
“I’ll support you.” Raymond ran over and placed Bosco’s arm over his back, as they moved on slowly.
Suddenly, gunshots could be heard a distance between both of them. Raymond turned to fire a few shots, hitting down a few pursuers. Grabbing Bosco’s gun from his hand, Raymond placed him in a safe hiding spot first, before going out to face the enemies. Bosco could not make any noise, lest he betrayed his position, but he was worried for Raymond as well, since he heard more deafening gunshots piercing through the air. Apparently, Raymond was hoping to distract the German soldiers away from Bosco, and then took them down before reuniting with Bosco. After a seemingly long while, Raymond returned with a bloody mess on his left sleeve. He was being shot in his left arm just now.
“We need to be quick. They’re coming fast.” Raymond said, as he attempted to lift Bosco up, but his injured arm did not have enough energy whilst his other arm was holding onto the gun.
Bosco could feel the desperation coming from both of them. They would die if they did not get moving right now.
“You go first. Go without me, Ray.” Bosco pushed him away.
“I won’t leave you behind. Let’s try again.” Raymond rejected Bosco’s suggestion immediately.
“Just leave me alone, and go. Both of us will die if you don’t do so.” Bosco was getting angry.
Raymond became furious as well as he grabbed onto Bosco’s uniform, “Shut up, you fool. Trying to be a hero here huh? I can tell you it isn’t worth it alright? If you die, Myolie will be upset. I will be too. So stop telling me to go first. We’ll go back together.”
“It’s sufficient for Myolie to have you.” Bosco mumbled, as he pushed himself up from the ground with Raymond’s support.
“Shut up, and save your energy,” Raymond shot back in an unhappy tone, before he continued saying, sounding more sincere this time, “I’m sorry, Bosco. I should’ve told you this a year ago.”
There was only silence from Bosco’s side. He was trying to stay conscious, since it was getting dizzy for him with all the walking and blood loss from his two wounds.
“I’ll carry you.” Raymond was worried that Bosco may collapse any moment.
Shaking his head, Bosco murmured, “Just keep talking to me. I’ll be fine. We’re reaching the jetty soon.”
“I…I lied to you when I said that I didn’t have to be friends with you again. I shouldn’t have said that at all in the first place. I guess my anger got the better of me,” Raymond confessed, “You’re always my one and only best friend, Bosco. It has always been like this since 17 years ago.”
Bosco nodded his head and smiled weakly at his friend, “Me too.” But, Bosco could not take it any longer as his legs gave way. “I don’t think I can…”
“You can do it.” Raymond encouraged as he lifted Bosco onto his back, “Myo’s waiting for you to return. Just hang on a little, and you can see her soon.”
“Myo…” Bosco mumbled, but the thought of her managed to keep him awake, “How is she? Is she well?”
“She misses you badly,” Raymond smiled, “She told me to kick your ass back to London if I ever saw you here.”
“I missed her too…” Then, everything darkened before him.

[Early January 1944, London]
“Myo, where are you going?” Selena yelled when she saw Myolie rushing out of the medical camp.
“Ray’s coming back today! I’m off to the airbase!” Myolie shouted back, before hurrying to her destination.
A week ago, she had received a telegram from Raymond that he would be returning today. As she waited anxiously for the airplane to arrive back, Myolie could not help but wonder if there would be any delay.
“They’re back!” Someone in uniform shouted, and soon, an aircraft landed on the airbase.
Soldiers, whom had gone to other countries to participate in the war, had returned to their homeland, coming down from the huge aircraft one by one, as their families welcomed them in their embraces. And then, Myolie saw Raymond stepping out from the aircraft, and he smiled brightly at her upon spotting her a distance away. She ran towards him, as they embraced each other tightly for an entire minute.
“Guess whom I brought back, Myo.” Raymond grinned, as she looked over at the aircraft.
Bosco was walking down the steps when Myolie saw him. It had been two years after their last encounter.
“I’ve already completed my part. It’s up to you now.” Raymond patted on Myolie’s shoulder before going off.
“I thought you almost never wish to return to London.” Myolie commented with sarcasm.
Bosco felt guilty and regretful with his actions after listening to her comment, “I’m sorry for taking so long to return.”
“Well…” Myolie stepped forwards towards him and kissed him on the lips, “At least you’re back now. It’s never too late.”
Bosco smiled widely when he heard her words. He lifted Myolie up from the ground with both of his arms, and swung her around whilst laughing in happiness. Settling her back down on the ground, it was Bosco’s turn now to initiate the kiss on Myolie.
