Reacting as fast as she could, Hebe snatched the phone and dialed her mother’s number. Her heart pounded against her chest as she breathed rapidly.
“Oh God, pick up,” she muttered to herself.
“The number you have dialed is currently switched off or unavailable. Please try again later.”
There has to be something wrong, mum never turns off her mobile when she’s at work, Hebe thought as she slammed the phone down. Things were getting out of hand. Forgetting about school, Hebe took off on a run to her mother’s work place.
Arriving she glanced up on the tall building. You have to be here mum, she prayed. Opening the glass doors she made her way to the lady at the counter.
“Hello, what may I help you with?”
“Um, do you know a lady named Herlyn Tsai? She works here.”
“And you are?”
“I’m her daughter!”
“Ok, I’ll help you check. Please wait a second.”
Biting her lower lip, Hebe waited impatiently as the woman started clicking away on her keyboard.
“I’m sorry darling. We don’t have a Herlyn Tsai here.”
“Um, can you also try Herlyn Tian?”
“Sweetheart, we don’t have a Herlyn here,” came her reply.
“Are you sure?”
“Well, the records say there was a Herlyn Tsai but she was fired two years ago.”
Hebe’s eyes widened and gasped, “Two years ago?”
The lady looked at her with pity and asked, “Can I help you with anymore things?”
“No thanks. Thank you for your help” answered Hebe with a smile. She turned around and made her way out.
“Fired! What? Why haven’t mum mentioned anything about that?” muttered Hebe, “what should I do now?”
Hebe pulled her mobile out and called her mum once more just to receive the same reply. Sitting on the side stairs, the blood drained out of her face.
“Where are you mum?” cried Hebe in panic.
“How can I be so useless? Why can’t I care more about mum! I can’t believe I don’t even know where she works!”
Just when she was about to break down in tears, the words of the young boy flooded her mind.
“I can’t cry!” Hebe told herself, “If I break down, who’s going to find mum?”
Closing her eyes, she forced her tears down and stood up. Fishing into her pockets she pulled the bandage out and looked at it.
“You’ll be by my side right?” she asked it before looking up at the sky. Although she had no idea where he was at the moment, she knew they are both under the same sky. Every time she thinks this way, they don’t seem to be that far apart.
Hebe gathered her energy and walked off to the police office. She doubted they will help her but at least there is a chance. She pushed the doors open and went up to the police officer at the table.
“Yes miss?” asked the man.
“I’m here to report a case. My mum is missing and I found a robber at my house this morning,” explained Hebe.
“Robber? Could you take down any of his or her features?”
“Er…no. I didn’t see him.”
“Then was anything missing?” he asked.
“No, as far as I know. None…”
The police officer sat back on his chair and looked at her with irritation.
“Excuse me Miss, if you are here to waste our time I advise you to leave.”
“No sir! There was some intruder in my house today. I’m sure!”
“Intruder?” laughed the police, “Darling, you’ve been watching too many dramas lately. Go back to school.”
“I’m not joking!” answered Hebe angrily, “my house door was opened when I went home!”
“Are you sure you locked it properly this morning?”
“Yes!”
“When I say properly, I mean you checked and you didn’t just dash off.”
“I…” mumbled Hebe, lost for words.
“See! We have hundred of girls like you coming in here every day. All of them just make up stories and I don’t see any difference in you. Please do not waste our time.”
“What about my mum? She’s missing!”
“Since when?”
“This morning!”
The police started laughing and replied, “It’s only nine! Your mum should be at work! Ok, no more jokes and good bye.”
The officer pushed Hebe out and closed the door.
“Wait!” gasped Hebe but he had left.
“I knew they would be like that!” she bellowed as she started making her way home. “I guess I have to stay home and hope mum just appear on the doorstep tonight.”
Closing the door, she made sure it was locked and ran around the house making sure everything was locked. “Better to be safe than sorry” she told herself as she lay down on her bed. Unknowingly, she dozed off into a deep slumber.

Hebe’s eyes snapped open as she felt footsteps, it was already night time. “Mum?” she gasped with hope, pulling her room door open. Instead of the usual loving face, she was greeted with the face of a man with his face covered by a cloth.
Hebe yelled and pushed the door closed trying to lock it but the man was turning the knob on the other side. She was left to fight with him with her strength which was nothing compared to him. Few seconds later the door burst open and she fell on the ground. Crawling as fast as she could away from him in the dark, she felt him running up to her. Just as he made a grab for her arm, she brushed his cloth off.
“You!” she screamed.
The boy looked at her in shock and covered her mouth with his hand immediately. She had a close look at his familiar eyes before she drifted off to unconsciousness.
