Chapter 1

O n e S h o t

“You have to leave?”

A young and pretty girl stood at the doorway. Her boyfriend and lover had just knocked at her door and delivered some depressing news. He was moving; moving to America. Bae Hyun Ai was a 166cm girl with long black hair flowing down to her mid back. She had lovely black eyes which her boyfriend liked to look into; it soothed his soul whenever it was clouded by hate, sorrow and the other heart-tugging emotions he had experienced while he was with her.

“Hyun Ai ah…”

“Junsu…ah”

There was an unsettling silence between them. She had never experienced such emotion before. Kim Junsu was leaving America to go study at a good university. This emotion; mixed with sadness and happiness; she didn’t understand. She didn’t want Junsu to leave but she wanted him to get a good education. This decision wasn’t hers though. No matter what she said, her beloved would be on the plane tomorrow, flying out of her life.

“You’ll come back won’t you?”

The boyfriend kissed his loved one on the forehead tenderly however, his kiss wasn’t the only thing she felt. A single tear; a single tear drop, filled with emotions indescribable slid from his face down onto hers. There, it blended with her own tears and fell to the ground; together as one.

“Junsu ah…”

Once in his arms, she didn’t want to let go and neither did he. Not many words were spoken throughout this moment, for words cannot describe your true emotions within. Hyun Ai cried uncontrollably into Junsu’s shirt. Junsu tried to calm his girlfriend by stroking her hair softly.

“Hyun Ai ah…I’ll come back. Don’t worry.”

Junsu had to leave. The decision was final. Their final meeting place; the airport… Hyun Ai was wearing the dress that Junsu liked the best on her. It was a soft sunset colour and had roses near the hem. She had a faint smile on her face and he had a smile on his face as well. The two lovers reunited one last time before they exchanged gifts and departed; going their separate ways.

“Wait for me.”

She will. She had promised herself. She would wait for her beloved prince and cry in his arms once again. One year came and went and there was no message from her prince but she didn’t give up hope. Another year went by and another. It had been four summers since that fateful day where she lost sight of him in the clouds hovering above her; leading their simple lives, simply blown by the wind. If only life was like a drama, her life would be much simpler.

“Doctor, is something wrong with her?”

Her life was spinning out of control. She had been unstable for a while now and by the time her mother agreed to go to the hospital, it was too late.

“Your daughter has a brain tumor.”

Those six words shattered her heart. Does that mean…she won’t be able to see Junsu ever again?

“It-it can be removed, can’t it?”

“No…it’s spread and developed too much. No surgery can save her.”

No…from that moment on, she knew that her time was near. Everyday she urged Junsu to come back; to come back before it’s too late but can he hear the desperate cries of his beloved all the way from America?

“Junsu ah…please come back…”

However Junsu was not superman and so, he wasn’t about to hear her cries. He longed to go back to South Korea, his homeland…and the place where Hyun Ai will be waiting for him. He wanted it to be like the old days; worry-free and always by her side, through day and night, through rain and snow, he would be there for her. Since he had been brutally taken away from her, he hadn’t been himself. He had lost a considerable amount of weight and his parents were getting anxious.

“Mother, father, I want to go back to South Korea.”

It was no use; they had signed a contract that Junsu would remain at this university and America for 10 years. 10 years; usually students wouldn’t stay at university for this amount of time, however, this university promised to bring the best out of anyone and that was exactly what Junsu’s parents want. Junsu spent the rest of the day looking out the window. It was gloomy day; exactly what he was feeling now. There was a strange feeling within his heart. He knew there was something wrong with Hyun Ai but he couldn’t contact her in any way.

“Wait for me Hyun Ai…”

Hyun Ai remained at the window sill for most of her remaining days. She waited for the day where she would see a silver car park outside her door. A handsome young guy would step out of the car and pause for while. Then he would lift his head and his beautiful eyes would look straight into hers. It was a fantasy, it was a fairytale, but aren’t fairytales supposed to have happy endings. What would happen to this fairytale? Where was the “happily ever after”? Where was her charming prince who would rescue her from the clutches of fate?

Two months flew by and she no longer had the energy to live. She used her last amount of strength to write a letter; a letter to her beloved.

-----------------------------------------

My dear Junsu,

Fate has decided that I must leave this world. I had hoped that I would be able to see your face again before I left but that’s not possible. Junsu, when you returned, I had hoped to ask for your hand in marriage but destiny tore us apart so cruelly. You must study in America while Cancer seeps through me gradually, disabling my functions and sending me to eternal sleep. My beloved, I have waited for you, just like you asked me to, but I’m afraid that this is the longest I can wait. I’m sorry I couldn’t wait longer. Junsu, I love you.

Love Bae Hyun Ai

----------------------------------------

A single teardrop fell from her eyes, slid down her face and rested on the parchment paper. It was time and she slipped into eternal sleep, never to be awakened. This was her fairytale ending. Not all fairytales have happy endings. This is just one sad example.
