Chapter 33

Two and Once

The roar of the helicopter was deafening. What was more annoying for Pea was the strange looking guy in front of her. She was sure the weird L was sitting beside her and yet, she could still see him driving the grudging machine while smelling Watari’s scent from him.

“It’s been a while since we did this set-up...brings back the old memories.” Watari said with a chuckle, fixing a little strand of ebony hair.

L glanced down the vast darkness below them with not expression on his face.

‘You enjoy being young i suppose.”

“Old men like me will always be young...at heart.”

Then so suddenly, L jumped off the helicopter tugging Pea hard against his chest. And when he and the canine were almost soon to hit the trees, a parachute opened, lowly gliding them away to the safety the darkness of the forest was offering.

As the helicopter was nearing the condemned warehouse, Watari glanced at his reflection on the glass window pane. He stared closely. He perfectly looked like L with all those prosthetics, sleepy eyes, messy hair, pathetic yet economical wardrobe, the voice which was very easy to imitate, but there was something missing to complete his ‘look’. He smiled. Right, the slouch.

...

“Papa, are you a scientist?”

The handsome man smiled lovingly at his princess. “Scientist? Why do you ask?”

The girl pouted her lips. “You wear all white and always counting.”

The man closed his eyes for a moment. “I am in a way. Sort of an inventor you know, designing strong cases with codes so that bad people will never get something very important.”

The girl’s eyes widened with disdain. “Papa, what ‘cases’? What am I, three? You mean ‘vaults’! Vaults papa! You design vaults. I know that. I’m smart.”

The man looked worried for a moment then scratched his chin looking defeated. ‘Alright Princess, ‘vaults’.”

“And you create passwords in it! I know it too. Is that why you always come home late papa?”

The man felt a pang of guilt.

“The truth is Papa doesn’t want to create this code, but i have no choice. My boss is a bit demanding.”

The girl placed her hands on both of her father’s cheek.

“Are the things inside that vault bad, Papa?”

“I can’t tell you.”

The girl suddenly squeezed the cheeks of her father making him flinch.

“You hate your boss papa.”

The man was surprised for her daughter was stating it, not asking it. the girl grinned a toothless grin.

‘If I were you Papa, I’d make a password to open it, if the boss is good, but if he’s bad, I’ll reverse the password, then ‘KABOOM’! The contents will be destroyed inside and he will never be able to use it anymore!” she said with pride.

The man scooped the little girl in his arms and playfully pinched her nose.

“That’s very clever, but mean princess.”

The girl looked down. “I know, sorry,” and then she stared directly at her father’s eyes, “but if i got no choice and its the only right thing left to do...why not?”

The man frowned. “Where did you learn all this things huh? You sound like a grown-up already!”

The girl frowned also. “I learned it from you. And from Mama.”

The man chuckled. “Okay, okay..you win!”

The man smiled and stared at the strongest vault he was programming. “Reverse the code, perhaps i may give it a try someday, if the boss became really bad.” He said as he was tickling his angel with fear starting to swell in his heart.

The girl was happily playing with her father. One moment she was so happy then, after a blink, it was all dark. She slowly reached her nape and massaged it, she was sure it was broken into two.

“Aww...what the?” she froze as the rerun of her thoughts flashed in her mind. Something that hit her and Cel’s mean smile. And suddenly she could feel the rush of adrenaline pump into her system.
