Chapter 2

*******
Part 2

HaNeul looked terrified when KangTa noticed her eyes. She quickly stood up
and tried to escape the scene, but KangTa's fascination wouldn't let her go. He
chased after her and blocked her path, probing her eyes one more time to make
sure that he had seen correctly.

"You... really have blue eyes! Wow, cool! I've never seen blue eyes before!"
KangTa ejaculated in wonderment.

She averted her eyes from being scrutinized by KangTa, but this time, she was
faced with WooHyuk, whose massive curiosity led him to take a look at her eyes
as well.

"BLUE EYES! WOW! What are you, an alien?!" WooHyuk exclaimed.

HaNeul cringed once again at his comment. This was only the first day of her
new school and it foreshadowed the misery she'd have to encounter for rest of
the year... perhaps her entire life, since LiRa school was from elementary to
college.

"LeeHaNeul is an alien~ LeeHaNeul is an alien~" HeeJun began taunting. Soon
the other kids in cafeteria joined HeeJun and chanted.

"LeeHaNeul is an alien~ LeeHaNeul is an alien~"

Her eyes were filled with tears, ready to burst out at any given second. She
looked miserably at JaeWon, who stood there feeling stupefied. Only Tony and
KangTa were nice enough to stay out of the taunt.

"No no no!" WooHyuk halooed, which broke the chant. "She's not an alien~
she's a TUI GEE (a very demeaning term for a person with mixed blood)! A TUI
GEE!!"

"LeeHaNeul is a TUI GEE! LeeHaNeul is a TUI GEE!"

The crowd chanted a new slogan for their victim.

JaeWon couldn't hold his anger in anymore; he snatched HaNeul's wrist and
dragged her out of the cafeteria, leaving rest of the BIG 5 in confusion.

JaeWon dragged her out to the hallway, making sure that they were isolated
from everyone. He was a little third grader but he was strong enough to take out
on her if he wanted to, especially taking the advantage of the fact that she was
too languid to defend herself.

"What are you doing?! You're embarrassing me in front of all my friends!"
JaeWon yelled angrily.

"But... Dad said..."

"I don't have to listen to what he said! You're not even my real noona! I am NOT
going to listen to him!!"

With that, he ran away from her.

She stood in the empty hallway, trying to hold her tears back.

[Lee Residence]

The maids bowed courteously as JaeWon entered the main room. Servants took
his small jacket and his backpack. He went past his mom, who was filing her
nails on the couch.

"How was school, sweetie?" Mrs. Lee asked in a sickeningly sweet voice.
JaeWon frowned.

"TERRIBLE! Why does SHE have to go to my school? She embarrassed me in
front of BIG 5!"

He huffed and stomped upstairs.

HaNeul entered right at that moment and had heard everything JaeWon said.
She bowed to Mrs. Lee and walked past her, when she heard Mrs. Lee
mumbling something cruel and hateful.

Soon, HaNeul's eyes were filled with tears again; but she fought with all her
might to hold them back.

***~***~***
There was one time HaNeul's dad, who was JaeWon's dad also, told her a story.
It almost sounded like a fairy tale, but it was a true story.

"Once upon a time, there was a guy who loved this girl... a beautiful girl, whose
eyes were crystal blue and radiant. They were both very happy together and she
gave birth to a girl, who had the same blue eyes as hers. Because the eyes
reflected the clear sky, we named her 'HaNeul.'

The guy's parents denied their marriage because his wife wasn't as rich as him;
not only that, but she was also not full Korean. She was a mix of half white and
half Korean, and because his parents thought prominently of 'pure' blood, she
was denied. Heartbroken, she went back to where she came from, America. And
the guy never heard from her again.

His parents forced him into an engagement, and he had to marry a woman whom
he did not truly love. But a slight appreciation began to form between them and
soon, he had a son named JaeWon.

However, he never stopped thinking about his true love and his daughter, and
every time he looked at the sky, he was reminded of them. One day, he heard a
sad news that she had died from a car accident, and his daughter was now an 8
year-old orphan. So he went to meet her immediately and brought her back to
Korea. She will live with him forever and ever now, until he dies and meets his
beloved angel again."

"HaNeul, promise me, that no matter what happens, no matter how mean to you
people are, that you'd never cry. Your mom shall be proud of how strong you
are. You are my daughter and nothing can change that, you belong to this class
just as much as anyone else does. My beautiful Sky....

***~***~***
HaNeul walked down the aisle as she felt the sharp stares of kids piercing
through her body.

"You 'tui gee'! Go back to where you came from!"

One of the boys shouted and giggled with his friends. She ignored them and
continued walking down the hallway nonchalantly.

She entered her next class, which was a music room, much to her surprise.

But what horrified her even more was the fact that all of BIG 5 were present in
the same room. Only KangTa appeared congenial; the rest, especially WooHyuk
and JaeWon, seemed as if they were ready to bite her any moment. Tony was
neutral about the whole issue, and HeeJun had lost interest in taunting her
already.

"It's a TUI GEE!" WooHyuk mocked.

"My my, Mr. JangWooHyuk, you shouldn't be so rude to this young lady; do you
play any instrument, Miss LeeHaNeul?"

HaNeul let out a sigh of relief. Her music teacher seemed amicable, better than
her math teacher from the previous day.

"No... I don't play any instrument."

WooHyuk and HeeJun looked at each other and giggled.

"Of course, a TUI GEE wouldn't know how to play an instrument."

She was already accustomed to WooHyuk's harshness.

"Hmm...that could be a problem, HaNeul. Everyone at this school is required to
take a music class 3 times a week. Why don't you just pick any instrument and
start bringing it to class next time?"

The music teacher, Mrs. Park, instructed. HaNeul nodded and took a seat, as far
away from BIG 5 as possible.

She contemplated throughout the day as to what kind of instrument she should
play. She never had any musical background, so it really wouldn't matter to her
anyway.

After school, she found out that JaeWon had ditched her. She had no ride home,
and home was miles away. She bit her lips tightly and strolled down the empty
school hallway, trying to figure out what to do.

Suddenly, she stopped when her ears perked up to a beautiful sound of violin
playing. Her hearing led her to the source of the sound; the music room.

It was a heartachingly beautiful sound. She could almost feel the person's
fingers gliding pleasantly on the strings.

She peeked into the room to see who the creator of this resonance was. She
gasped when she got a good look at his face.....
