It was KangTa.
His eyes were closed as he sank himself deeply into his own playing. He had
long and slender fingers for a third grader... a very satisfying prerequisite to play
such an instrument.
HaNeul's feet were glued onto the ground. She lifted her heels to get more
glimpse of him. Such a fair sound. How could he, with only 5 fingers, generate
such a moving sound?
Suddenly the music stopped.
KangTa had noticed that HaNeul was watching him. He sat down his violin and
the bow, and walked toward the door.
His face was red from the embarrassment. He had been playing violin since he
was 4 years-old, but this was the first time he felt so light-hearted by someone
watching him.
"Umm... you wanna come in, HaNeul?"
He offered, holding the door open for her. She nodded happily.
"That... that was really good... so pretty.... " she stuttered, complimenting him
with all her sincerity.
KangTa blushed even more by her compliment. Then, something clicked in his
brain and his eyes sparkled.
"OH! I know! Do you want to play violin with me?"
"M...m...Me?" she blinked her eyes several times. This was her trademark
whenever she was bewildered or in panick.
"Yes, YOU! No one plays violin except me in 3rd grade. HeeJun plays the bass
guitar, Tony plays keyboard, WooHyuk plays drums, and JaeWon...."
"JaeWon plays piano."
She finished off for him. She was reminded of the first day into the Lee
Residence; she happened to catch JaeWon playing 'Silvery Wave' by Wyman
with the huge fingers of his. She knew instantly that he wasn't musically inclined
at all, and that he lacked spirit because he had no interest in playing it.
"Yeah, how do you know? Anyway, so no one plays violin. Kids here don't like
classical music so they usually play guitar or drums. You wanna play with me?"
HaNeul gulped and blinked her eyes once more. All the kids in high class were
bound to be educated in all possible ways; music was obviously one of them.
"Okay...." she replied in a barely audible voice, solely out of timidity. KangTa
smiled joyfully.
"Cool! I'll tell my teacher tomorrow then."
He packed his instrument and zipped the case.
"By the way," he said, facing her directly in her eyes,
"Your eyes are brown again."
--------------------------------
School was still a place of terrible ordeal for HaNeul in the preceeding days.
"TUI GEE! TUI GEE! You can't hide your tui gee blue eyes with brown contact
lenses!"
WooHyuk's taunt never ceased to stop. The worst thing of all was that he was in
most of her classes; Korean, English, science, and P.E.. Also, she had to sit by
HeeJun in her math class which made it all too arduous for her.
Oh well, at least she didn't have a class with JaeWon or Tony. She found out
that Tony was KangTa's cousin, both the children of An Corporation. Tony didn't
have much against her, he was usually occupied chatting with other girls in 3rd
grade.
"You're late."
KangTa crossed his arms and tapped the floor with his left foot when HaNeul
entered the music room.
"I'm sorry."
She wanted to explain herself but refrained from doing so. It would be to no
avail if she told him that she was only late because other kids hindered her way
with their desire to examine her 'blue' eyes.
"It's okay. Here, take a look at this 1/2 size violin, I used it until my fingers grew
big enough for the 3/4 size."
How thoughtful of him. How did he know that her stepmom refused her request
of buying her a new violin? Maybe JaeWon blabbed to BIG 5 about it. For that,
she was grateful to JaeWon.
"Do you know how to read music?" he asked. She shook her head.
With that, KangTa's official yet unofficial (since he wasn't a professional) lesson
to HaNeul began. He introduced her to his private violin instructor, who was a
renowned musician in her early days.
For some reason, no matter how hard HaNeul tried, she couldn't learn to read
music, at all. This frustrated her because even after many days had passed, she
still remained a musical illiterate. KangTa was beginning to lose his patience.
"She's a musically reading disabled," KangTa's instructor diagnosed, "but no
need to worry, she's got great ears. I can play her the CD's and she can usually
dictate it after a couple times."
-------------------------------
"KANGTA!" WooHyuk called after him one day.
"Come over to my house today, I got some new playstation."
"I can't. I gotta go practice with HaNeul after school."
Upon KangTa's rejection, WooHyuk felt a tinge of anger.
"Why do you care so much about that tui gee anyway?" WooHyuk queried.
"She's JaeWon's noona. We are no better than her," KangTa replied.
Indeed, BIG 5 was no better than her. They were all equally rich in terms of
background, and since HaNeul belonged to JaeWon's family, they were in the
same class. But WooHyuk didn't want to acknowledge that.
"She's just a blue-eyed tui gee with brown contact lenses! You're too nice to
ANYBODY, KangTa."
Not paying his full attention to WooHyuk, he turned away from him and made his
path to the music room.
WooHyuk stared angrily at KangTa's back.
When he arrived home......
"UMMA!!!!" he yelled for his mom on top of his lungs.
"What's wrong, Hyukie?" Mrs. Jang answered. What pissed her only son off
today, she wondered.
"I wanna learn violin too!"
Mrs. Jang was shock-stricken at her son's tantrums.
"But Hyukie dear, you went from piano to trombone to bass guitar to drums.
Now you want to learn violin too?"
"Wahhh!! I wanna learn it! I wanna learn it!"
---------------------------------------
HaNeul's happiness at LiRa school wasn't meant to be.
"Not only you are a tui gee, you're also a BABO! You can't even read music!"
WooHyuk's constant taunts and teasings made her life even more miserable
than it already was; on top of that, he was often cruel enough to bring HeeJun
and their followers to "group torture" her.
The sad thing was, WooHyuk was truly a musical prodigy. There was no way
she could rebut to his taunts with her skills, because he was right; she was
stupid. The only way she could play her violin was when KangTa first recited a
piece for her.
'I want to hide my eyes even more when you call me that, JangWooHyuk.'
"I think your blue eyes are really cool, HaNeul."
KangTa would always tell her that, which melted her sadness away.
KangTa and WooHyuk. Day and Night. Angel and Devil. Light and Dark.
The contradicting analogies lived throughout her entire childhood.
