Chapter 8

Part 8

"Can you go now?! Is that all you can say?! Do you realize what's happening here?! I
just tried to..."

WooHyuk stuttered in astonishment at HaNeul's such calmness.

She stared at him with a blank expression on her face.

"You always get what you want, JangWooHyuk."

Her voice was icy and aloof.

She slowly got up, clutching her ankle she hurt when WooHyuk tripped her. She gathered
her books one by one carefully, and carried them in her arms once again.

She appeared as though she didn't awknowledge WooHyuk's presence in the hallway.
Limping in pain, she walked away farther and farther.....

"Hello, Sir."

WooHyuk's servants greeted their tired little master as he entered the house.

"You have a guest here, Sir."

One of the maids informed him.

"Guest? Who could it be?"

WooHyuk went into the main room to see who it was.

"Long time no see, Hyuk."

Dark brown hair... glasses... especially those ears that stick out...

"TONY!" WooHyuk cried in joy. "You're back!"

----------------------------------------

WooHyuk was the first one Tony visited after coming back from the States in 2 years.
They had been best friends, particularly the closest in BIG 5, as long as they could
remember.

"So you didn't like your in-laws, is that why you came back?"

WooHyuk asked while drinking his tea. Tony shrugged.

"Well, my 'parents' didn't like them. I didn't really care..."

"What, you just came back because your 'parents' didn't like them? Well, did YOU like
them then?" WooHyuk raised his voice a bit.

"I don't know and I don't care," was the only reply Tony could give. He then went on.

"That's all we could ever do; people like us, who are born into rich families, have to go
along with what our parents tell us to do. They tell us which school to go to, what friends
to be with, and... who we should marry...."

"I'm never letting my parents control my life," said WooHyuk sternly.

"And that includes who I'm going to marry. I'm going to choose my own bride."

"Hahaha!" Tony bursted out in a sarcastic laughter. "*Choose*? Like we ever had any
chance to make our own choices? You're being an idealist, Hyuk. You do remember
what happened to me and 'JaeHee', don't you?"

BaekJaeHee... the name WooHyuk could never forget... she was Tony's first sweetheart.

And she was the first person who also made Tony realize the cruelty of the world he lived
in.

[Next day at LiRa]

WooHyuk experienced sudden solitude to have realized that HaNeul wasn't at school
today. He'd have to go through a boring physics class, without anyone to torture. What a
dreaded thought....

Why did she never get angry at him for all he did? Many times he pulled terrible pranks on
her just because he 'felt like it', but she never told him to stop.

"Why isn't she here today?" WooHyuk asked JaeWon after class.

"I dunno," JaeWon shrugged. "Maybe she felt like ditching school today because it's her
birthday."

---------------

"KangTa! Where are you taking me? I'm late to school because of you!"

HaNeul shouted to top the sound of the wind blowing against her face as KangTa was
driving 80 miles per hour on a highway in his treasured Eclipse.

"Naw, you can miss school on your birthday!" he replied playfully.

"Says who?"

"Me!"

"I knew I should've known that something was behind when you said you'd come pick me
up this morning."

But HaNeul knew that she couldn't be merrier that morning. Especially after the last
night's unpleasant incident with WooHyuk...

The place KangTa decided to take her was some hidden forest away from Seoul's tainted
and polluted region.

"Umm... what are we here for?" she wondered. KangTa just smiled mischievously as he
cleared his throat.

"Ehem! Mi mi mi mi mi~"

"Oh no! You're not planning to sing, are you?" she laughed in surprise as she gazed into
his puppy eyes.

But she became solemn when his beautiful voice started echoing in the forest, causing
trees to tremble gracefully.

"~Do you know my mind? I've never dreamt of my life without you.

When I first met you, I swore to the Sky, that I'd protect you until the day this
world ends.

I cried a lot yesterday, and realized many things after seeing your tears.

I always thought I was the only one to love you, because you had never told me how
you felt.

Even if all the happiness in this world is given to me, I know it can't replace you.

The happiness this world has given me is You, so I'm thankful that I am able to see
you.~"

HaNeul's eyes watered in ultimate happiness as his voice continued to ring pleasantly.

"~When I first met you, I swore to the Sky, that I'd protect you until the day this
world ends.

When we are together, let's not say things that would hurt each other.

Hating each other is probably a hard thing to do, but even if you hate me still, then
hate me just a little.

Our love, until the day Sky separates us, I want to love you.

Will you please accept this heart of mine? Thank you, that I'm able to love you.~"

Mind?)]

"I...I'm speechless."

HaNeul stuttered, as she tried to hide her happy feelings. But her face was obviously
blushing too much.

"Haha, well you're speaking now, aren't you?"

KangTa joked and scratched the back of his head in an embarrassment. He then reached
his hand to the back of his car and grabbed something.

"Happy 18th birthday, Miss LeeHaNeul!"

Tulips and baby's breath... her favorite flower...

Soon she could feel KangTa's own breath drawing closer to her face as he leaned over to
her.

But when he noticed a foreign scent of makeup, he held her face by her chin.

"What happened here?" he asked gravely.

"Hmm?" she questioned back as an answer.

"You have something on your chin."

Using his thumb, he carefully rubbed the foundation she used to conceal her bruises off her
chin and her throat.

"Oww..."

She let out a painful yelp.

"Who did this to you? It looks like someone was trying to choke you to death."

KangTa said worriedly as he caressed her face carefully not to hurt her, although he had a
pretty good idea of who would commit such a despicable act.

"I am not stupid, HaNeul. Is it the same person who injured your hand as well?"

He reached for her left hand and brought it closer to his face, kissing it gently.

His sharp observation surprised her quite a bit. But she just shrugged casually.

"I'm okay. Don't worry about it."

"Don't worry about it?! How could I not worry about it?!" his voice boomed.

"Calm down, KangTa! It's no big deal."

She said calmly, releasing her hand from his grip.

"Why don't you ever tell me of these things? Why do you let people push you around like
this?" his voice broke out into a frustrated wave.

"I don't care about 'people' as long as I have you."

She smiled weakly, and smelled the tulips she just received from him.

"But this is going too far! It's enough that you let JaeWon and HeeJun say all those things
to you, and now it's this..."

KangTa choked on his own sadness as he blamed his incompetence for not being there
when WooHyuk was doing all this to her.

"I didn't want to tell you because they are all good friends of yours, but I suppose you
know now."

She looked away for a brief moment.

"I suspected it all along but I didn't think WooHyuk would do this much. I'm sorry..."

KangTa slowly pulled her towards him and buried her head into his chest.

She sighed happily in his arms, where she knew that she could be safe and content. She
wished this would last forever.

"I'm going to make sure from now on that no one will hurt you."

He stroked her hair and lightly kissed it.

"And how would you do that? You know people at LiRa hate me because of who I am.
I'll most likely get lynched if I even tried to stand up for myself," she whispered sadly.
This was a very unfortunate reality for her.

"No one can hurt you if they know that you belong to me, one of only two sons in the An
family."

KangTa firmed his embrace of her and terminated his statement in a stern voice.

"That's why I'm going to ask my parents if they can get us engaged."
