Three days passed as Selina made the necessary preparations for her next kill. It was decided upon that the assassination would have to occur during the day, for invading the Wang mansion at night was just plain suicide. Selina would go to stay in a room next door to Rainie’s mother, waiting for the time of day in which Rainie would arrive for her daily visit. The bodyguards that followed her on this routinely trip never proceeded up the stairs, except for one who would be posted outside the room. This was of no complication however as the flat’s balconies were quite close together, close enough to climb from one to the other. As for escape, Selina would rappel down from the third floor on which the room was situated, quickly making her way to the waiting car.
Zhi Ping would not be accompanying her once again, too busy with another of Yi Xia’s retaliation attacks on the Jiao Group. In fact, most of the Syndicate was busy with this gang war in one way or another, all except for Calvin who was conveniently kept out of the way by his father restricting him to working in the office. This of course was not met well with the young man but he had no choice but to concede, much to his frustration.
Selina’s upcoming task did not sit well with her in these three days and as she waited in the room next door to Rainie’s mother, she was in half a mind to abandon what she had to do and run away, chasing the dream Danson had described to her the other day. Thinking back on her meeting with Danson, her return back to the mansion after their rendezvous had gone by without much suspicion save for Yi Xia wondering why she was slightly late. As it was only a few minutes, Selina managed to easily answer that it was because of heavy traffic and thankfully, the driver was flawless in his acting.
Glancing around at her weapons which lay in wait on the floor to be strapped to her body, Selina closed her eyes as she leant her head back against the wall, taking in a deep breath. She had never been so nervous to kill someone in so many years, not since she had made her first few kills all those years ago that had turned her down this path. Being alone in this room left with her own thoughts to entertain herself as she waited did nothing to help allay her fears. The lone clock on the wall before her ticked loudly as the seconds crawled by, counting down to the moment she would have to kill. Opening her eyes, she glanced at the clock. Another hour to go before her target would arrive.
Her fist clenched tightly, she steeled herself mentally for what she will have to do. She had to go through with this, even though she was soiling her hands even further. She had to do it, if she wanted to survive another day to see Danson again.

Aaron couldn’t shake the uncomfortable feeling he had in the pit of his stomach, as if his intuition was trying to warn him about something bad happening. Shaking his head as if that would chase the feeling away, he continued to finish off preparing the order for his customer. Once done, he hurriedly went to deliver the order to the waiting table before coming back to sit at the table his sister was waiting at with a smile on her face.
“You know, you don’t always have to quickly finish up your tasks just to come sit with me, Aaron,” laughed Rainie as she ate another spoonful of the triple choc sundae she had ordered from him earlier.
Aaron sheepishly smiled as he looked away, embarrassed. “You caught me there, Jie.”
Rainie laughed at her little brother’s embarrassment as she shook her head. Aaron turned to peer at her laughing face with a smile. Since she had told him about becoming Jiro’s girlfriend, he had seen her happier than she had ever been. A sense of relief flushed through him as he realised that Jiro must be treating her right if she was this happy. But why was there that nagging feeling that something bad will happen?
“You know, Aaron,” said Rainie in between another mouthful of her sundae. “You really should come and visit Mother with me sometime. I hate to admit it but she seems to be doing better now that she has unlimited funds for her gambling problem thanks to me. Jiro doesn’t seem to mind it all and funnily enough, he even said it would be another way to lure in more customers by having someone always playing there.”
Aaron frowned slightly at Rainie’s suggestion, somewhat reluctant to do as she said. He still hadn’t forgiven their mother over the incident where she had sold Rainie to Jiro. “I don’t know…” he started.
Rainie picked up her sundae bowl, scooping up the last of the chocolate ice-cream that was left. “You don’t know what, Aaron? Come on, she’s really not such a bad person these days. Why don’t you come with me now?”
“Now?” repeated Aaron in surprise. “But I’ve still got work!”
She put her sundae bowl down with a clunk, a big grin on her face. “You can take the rest of the day off, silly. It won’t hurt to skip a few hours once in a while.”
Aaron peered down into his lap, thinking it over. He still wasn’t too keen on going to see their mother and the thought of abandoning his job to go with Rainie filled him with a little bit of guilt. He rarely took days off, being the responsible person he was, and not once had he skipped work. Coming to a decision, he said, “Not today, Jie. I don’t want to skip on work and besides, tomorrow is my day off. Maybe I’ll go with you then if I feel like it.”
The look on Rainie’s face fell in disappointment as her shoulders slumped slightly, muttering a soft, ‘Oh’. Then she smiled again, looking up into her younger brother’s face. “Alright then – tomorrow you’ll go to see Mother with me. And no other excuses this time around, okay Di Di?” she said as she stood up, reaching out to ruffle her younger brother’s hair playfully. Aaron swatted his sister’s hand away with an embarrassed frown on his face. Rainie just laughed. “Well, I’d better get going. I always have to go check on her at this time of day when I know she’ll be at home for sure.”
“She’s always home at this time because she knows you’ll bring her a nice, big, fat cheque to spend at the casino of that ‘boyfriend’ of yours,” snapped Aaron sarcastically.
Rainie swatted at Aaron and he dodged the move with a grin. “You don’t have to say it like that, Aaron,” exclaimed Rainie as a blush crept across her cheeks. Aaron spotted the blush and this provoked him to tease her further.
“Well, that’s what he is, isn’t he? Have you told him, ‘I love you hunny, my sweet little bunny!’ like you used to say to your dolls when you were little?” he teased, grinning widely from ear to ear. Rainie grabbed her bag and tried to hit him with it but he just ran away, laughing evilly as he sped towards the door.
“Shut up, Aaron!” snapped Rainie as she chased out after him. Aaron ran to hide behind one of her bodyguards, who ended up being the target of Rainie’s flying bag. “Oops! Sorry, Ming!”
Ming just smiled as he bent to pick up his mistress bag. “That’s okay, Miss,” he replied as he handed the bag back to her. Aaron stuck his tongue out teasingly at his sister from behind the big man.
Rainie glared at him as she pointed at him in warning. “Next time I won’t be so easy on you, Little Di Di. I’ll start spilling your secrets in a public place next time.”
Aaron pretended to look scared, clapping his hands to the side of his face. “Oh please don’t do that, Honourable Jie! I am so frightened already!” he laughed loudly.
Rainie nodded her head, pursing her lips as she silently swore revenge against her little brother. Then, deciding to let the matter rest for now, she walked over to her car. “I’ll come and pick you up at Dad’s place tomorrow to go visit Mother with us, same time as today. Is that alright with you?”
Aaron came out from his hiding place behind Ming, the mischievous look on his face now gone. “Alright, but I’m still not that willing to see that witch.”
Rainie rolled her eyes, coming to kiss her brother’s cheek lightly. “I know but just do it for me, okay?” she said, a pleading look in her eyes. Aaron nodded unwillingly and she smiled, heading into her car.
“Until tomorrow, Aaron,” she said through the open window, waving at him as the car pulled out.
“Until tomorrow,” repeated Aaron, waving his sister off, the earlier uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach returning.

Rainie had barely raised her hand to knock on the door when her mother came to open it, grinning widely from ear to ear in what she thought was a warm, inviting smile. “Rainie darling! You’re a little late today but that’s alright! Come in, come in!” she greeted loudly, pulling her daughter into the room eagerly.
Seating her roughly onto the sofa, her mother came to sit beside her excitedly, an eager look in her eyes. “So, how have you been doing, dear? And how is Mr Jiro doing?” she asked sweetly.
Rainie rolled her eyes at her mother’s actions, moving to dig in her handbag. “We’re all fine as usual, Ma.” Finally, Rainie found what she was looking for and pulled out a cheque folded in half. “Here, Ma – some more money. And try not to spend it so fast, okay?” she said as her mother snatched the cheque from her hand and glanced at the sum, her brow creasing in disappointment when she saw how much it was.
“Is this all?” she snapped, her earlier happiness all gone. “Yesterday was more than this.”
Rainie just shrugged at her mother’s reaction. “That’s all Jiro is willing to give you today. If you’re not happy about it, then go take it up with him.” The truth was Rainie had been the one to ask Jiro to lower the sum he was going to give her, hoping that if her mother slowly eased off how much she was gambling she would be able to break the habit. Of course, Rainie didn’t put her hopes high on this tactic but she still wanted to try it out anyway.
Realising she had let slip her good-natured motherly act, Rainie’s mother once again smiled sweetly with her daughter. “That’s alright, Rainie dear; if this is all Mr Jiro is willing to give me, then I’ll take it. It’s better than nothing.”
Heaving a small sigh, Rainie shook her head as she watched her mother head off towards her bedroom to hide her brand new check. She was always like this, enthusiastically anticipating her arrival for the cheque she would bring with her. Getting up off the sofa, Rainie made her way over to the kitchen where she began preparing herself a cup of coffee.
“I’ll be bringing Aaron along with me tomorrow, Ma. He isn’t too keen on coming but I hope you two can get along with one another for at least a day.” Plugging in the electric kettle and setting it to boil, Rainie then glanced towards her mother’s bedroom, wondering why there was no answer. It was strange; normally her mother would send a curt comment whenever she mentioned her brother.
Walking over to the bedroom door, she gave a light knock on the door. “Ma! Ma, are you alright?” she shouted, growing worried. Her mother was not that young anymore and something could have happened to her.
Opening the door which wasn’t locked, a horrified gasp escaped her lips as she found her mother sprawled face down on the bed, the sheets soaked with an unbelievable amount of blood. Her blood ran cold as she stood fixated to the spot, unable to understand what had happened to her mother. Rainie took several slow steps towards her mother, everything around her seeming like a horrible, horrible nightmare.
“Ma…” she whispered terrified, falling to her knees beside her mother’s dead body. As she was about to scream her mother’s name, the situation finally penetrating her shocked mind, a hand suddenly covered her mouth from behind. The door closed with a bang seconds later and a shiver of terror ran down Rainie’s back, realising that the one who had killed her mother had not yet left the room.
Rainie felt something cold and sharp pressed against her neck and she closed her eyes in fear, frightened tears falling from her eyes as she realised she was about to die. She didn’t want to die, she didn’t want to leave her father, she didn’t want to leave Aaron and… she didn’t want to leave Jiro. Jiro… the name echoed loudly within her mind as her heart twisted painfully. She remembered her conversation with him the other morning and at this moment, she regretted not saying those three words when he asked her. Now that she was about to die, she realised how much she loved Jiro and found how foolish she was being hesitant in loving him with her whole heart.
As her tear touched the assassin’s hand, she felt it twitch slightly on her mouth. “Please forgive me…” whispered the assassin, a sad note to her voice. “I don’t want to kill innocents either but… I have to.” With that last sentence, she drew her blade across Rainie’s throat and held onto her tightly until she stopped thrashing, her breathing no more.

A/N:
Okay, I'm armed and ready for your outrage at me having Dawn kill off Rainie. *brandishes shield and sword in waiting* I hope the reasons behind why Selina is chosing to continue killing is good enough and that maybe you understand why Rainie didn't want to say "I love you" to Jiro. I know, I'm also cruel in that aspect too but I want to provoke my readers feelings *insert evil laughter*
Next Chapter: Rainie's body is found.
