Chapter 5

[C h a p t e r 5]

Jiro Wang swung his golf club in a perfect arc, the head of the club connecting perfectly with the ball to propel it far into the driving range. He saw the ball land just beyond the 200 yard mark.

“Ah… what a shame; you fell short of my ball by about 30 yards,” said Wu Chun as he vainly shook his head with a smile. He pressed his club to a small lever at the base of the golf ball dispenser. A small robotic arm swivelled out to place a golf ball on the tee.

“Let’s see if you can maintain your winning streak, Chun,” teased Jiro playfully at his friend. Chun grinned back as he swung at the ball.

The ball sailed through the air, landing only a few yards behind Jiro’s.

“Hah! That proves your last ball was a fluke!” shouted Jiro in triumph.

“Shut up,” snapped Chun. He went back to sit in his chair, sipping from his iced fruit drink. Jiro came to join him.

“Aww… don’t be such a sore loser, Chun. You know it doesn’t go well with the girls,” teased Jiro.

“Didn’t I tell you to shut up?” He turned away, disgruntled. “If it was the basketball courts, then it would be a different matter altogether.”

Jiro rolled his eyes at Chun. “Yes, yes, we all know that you’re an ex-national team veteran. Speaking of which; how’s your father doing by the way?”

It was Chun’s father who had forced Chun to quit the national team, several years ago. He still never forgave his father for that but had since resigned to his fate in politics. “He’s never been better. The polls are leaning in his favour. Many are already referring to him as President Wu Lang. It annoys me to no end that they’re doing that.”

Jiro nodded as he absorbed the information. “That’s good to hear.” He seemed to be lost in thought before Chun snapped his fingers before him.

“What are you spacing out for, Jiro?” he asked with a grin. “Is something wrong with your company? Now that I think about it, I haven’t seen you until today. What have you been up to?”

Jiro smiled back at his friend. “Just some family business I had to take care of.”

“Family business? I thought you had no family left after your mother passed away two years ago.”

“It turns out I do,” said Jiro solemnly. “But it’s nothing important. The company’s doing fine as well, but I’ve had to run around a little lately.”

Chun nodded. “I see.” He suddenly stood up, picking up his golf club and returning to his tee. “Hey, Jiro; whoever is the first to reach 300 yards will get to request anything of the loser. Deal?”

A big grin spread on Jiro’s face as he stood, moving to his spot. “Bring it on, bro’.”

Ella was still resisting the pull of her sister as she was being dragged towards the driving range. Unfortunately, she was shorter than her younger sister and was losing the battle badly.

“Elle; I really don’t want to play golf. Just let me go home already!” she complained as Elle finally managed to drag her to the entrance.

“I’m not going to let my Jie shrivel up at home as she pours over some boring case. You need to come and socialise once in a while, Jie,” said her sister with a sweet smile.

The smile on her younger sister’s face sent shivers down her spine. Ella stood up straighter, a stern, disapproving look now on her face. “As your older sister, I command you to let me return home.”

Elle rolled her eyes. “Please, Jie; I’m not five years old anymore. That kind of threat won’t make me release you.”

“Then you leave me no choice.” Ella suddenly twisted her right arm out and around, stepping behind her sister to lock the arm around her neck, keeping a firm hold on the opposite shoulder.

Elle stomped on her sister’s foot, causing Ella to immediately release her. “Ow! What was that for?” exclaimed Ella as she hopped on one foot.

“For being stupid. You don’t need flashy moves to get someone off you.” Elle grabbed Ella’s wrist once more and began to drag her inside. “Now behave and enjoy your time here, Jie.”

Ella grudgingly abided and was soon led to her sister’s group of friends who were there to play with them. Elle introduced her sister to them and although they tried to hide it, Ella still noticed the mocking glances they were giving her. Sure, she wasn’t a very feminine woman; tomboyish, in fact. She was the complete opposite of her younger sister, who stylishly wore a mini sports skirt and top. Ella was dressed in a pair of faded sweatpants and a loose, plain t-shirt.

Elle suddenly handed Ella the golf club. “Here, Jie; since you’re our special guest, we’ll let you hit first.” She smiled optimistically at her older sister.

“I don’t think this is a good idea…” began Ella but she was then shoved up to the tee with the club awkwardly in her hands. Elle showed her how to hold the club, and where to tap to make the ball come out.

When she thought that her sister was ready to try, Elle stood back with an encouraging smile. Ella took in a deep breath as she placed the club before the ball, taking aim. She drew back the club, swinging at the ball with full force. The ball toppled off the tee, rolling only a few centimetres away.

The other girls had trouble trying to hold back their laughter. Ella could hear them snickering as she picked up the ball and put it back on the tee.

“Are you sure she can do this, Elle?” asked one of them.

“Shhh! You weren’t any better when you first started, Annie,” retorted Elle in defence of her sister.

Ella silently thanked her sister for the retort. She took aim again, and this time the club connected with the ball, sending it to land about 40 yards away. Ella smiled in triumph, despite herself.

Elle clapped loudly as she came to pat her sister on the shoulder. “Well done, Jie! Now that wasn’t too hard, was it? Come on guys, let’s get started.”

They all took up their clubs and went to stand in their sections. Ella watched as they hit their balls, landing at around the 180 yard mark. She was impressed by how far they were able to hit the balls, and it only fuelled her determination to match them. Ella found that whacking the balls helped to relieve her stress over the Dawn case, which had begun to get on her nerves. As she was nearing the end of her basket of golf balls, Ella was able to match the other girls, even reaching the 200 yard mark. They all stared at her in awe when that happened, and a new kind of respect for her began to form in their eyes.

Ella was the first to retire, collapsing in her chair at their table. The others soon followed, coming to sit with smiles on their faces.

“You sure did improve fast, Ella Jie,” said Annie, smiling brightly.

“Yeah, I’ve never seen anyone learn that fast,” said one of the other girls.

Ella laughed. “Ah, they used to call me the ‘lightning learner’ back in the Police Academy. I was always the first to pick up everything.”

Their eyes suddenly grew wide. “The Police Academy? Does that mean that you’re a cop?”

Ella eyed her sister out of the corner of her eye before she continued. “Yeah, I am.”

An excited look then lit their faces. “Whoa! That is so cool! How come you never told us, Elle?”

Elle just shrugged as she avoided her sister’s gaze. “I didn’t think it was that important.”

“But it is!” they all shouted in unison. Ella was still eyeing her sister. She knew why Elle never mentioned her sister’s profession to her friends. It was because deep down she never approved of her sister’s choice, believing it was her fault in the first place that Ella chose such a dangerous career. When they were younger, the sisters were out playing in a park when a car suddenly pulled up and a man emerged. He grabbed a hold of Elle and began dragging her to his car. Ella fought against the man, but being only ten at the time, she was unable to do anything. Luckily, a policeman happened to be passing by at that moment, scaring the kidnapper off. That was when Ella vowed to become a policewoman, to protect her sister.

Ella suddenly snapped out of her reverie. She glanced over at the others with a smile. “I need a drink. Any of you want one?”

They all giggled, pointing at the glasses on the table that Ella hadn’t noticed. “We all got ours a while ago.”

“I’ll go get you a drink, Jie,” said Elle as she was about to stand but was stopped by Ella.

“That’s alright, Elle; I can get it myself.” She stood up and made her way over to the kiosk where the drinks were sold.

“One Iced Pineapple Smoothie,” said Ella in unison with another male voice. She spun on the spot to see a handsome and somewhat familiar face.

The man looked down at her with a small amused smile. “It looks like we’re having the same drink,” he said.

“Yeah, I guess so,” replied Ella as she turned back around to face the counter. She had a nagging feeling that she’d seen his face somewhere. In one of her wanted criminal files?

He leaned on his back against the counter, staring back out over the range. “I don’t usually see many girls like you out here. I mean, dressed the way you are, that is.”

Ella glanced back down at her appearance before staring back into the depths of the kiosk. “I like to be comfortable.”

The man gave a small chuckle. “I guess you do.” The kiosk attendant finally returned with the two pineapple smoothies. Ella was about to reach into her pocket when the man suddenly put out a hand to stop her. She looked up at the man, frowning as she stepped away from him. He just smiled and turned to the kiosk attendant. “Put it on my tab,” he said, nodding at Ella’s drink.

“Very well, Master Wu.”

“I can afford my own drinks, mister,” snapped Ella as she drew out the money, placing it on the counter and grabbing her drink as she walked off. The man watched her walk away with an amused grin.

“An interesting woman indeed,” he said quietly as he took his drink, leaving the money on the counter.

Ella stormed back to her table, sitting silently in her seat with an annoyed expression. The others looked at her, confused, but left her alone as they continued their conversation. She continued to fume in her seat, peeved that the man had arrogantly tried to pay her tab. She wasn’t someone to buy off that easily.

“Hey, Chun! What took you so long to get your drink?” shouted someone several meters away at another table. Ella glanced over to see the man she had met at the counter come to sit with his friend.

Chun… Master Wu… Wu… Wu Chun… Wu Lang’s son! Ella suddenly remembered the smiling face of Wu Chun who always stood behind his father in his promotional speeches. That jerk is the son of a future president? She glanced away, now focusing on her drink. No wonder he seemed familiar. She felt like slapping her head in stupidity. How could she not remember something like that? The she gave herself a mental shrug. But it’s not like we’re ever going to meet again, right?
