Aaron abruptly rose up out of his seat as soon as Jiro walked past the guest waiting room, seemingly oblivious to his surroundings with a distant look in his eyes. Quickly, Aaron rushed over to cut Jiro off as he reached the base of the stairs which lead to his study.
“Do you have a minute? I’ve got something I want to talk to you about.”
Jiro exchanged a glance with Jay and the others around him before they all nodded and continued on off down the hallway beyond the stairs. Turning to nod his head in the direction of the stairs, Jiro led the way up as Aaron followed him quietly behind.
They entered Jiro’s study upstairs and as they set foot into the room, Aaron realised that this was in fact the first time he had ever stepped into the older man’s office. It was a modestly furnished room, modular styled shelves carrying a sparse number of books and files adorning the walls. To the left of the entrance was a large window which looked out over the mansion’s garden, a silver venetian blind partly obscuring the view. Jiro proceeded to sit behind his simply styled beech desk, leaning forward on the desk as he looked up at Aaron expectantly, waiting to hear what it was that Aaron wanted to say to him.
Aaron quickly took his seat opposite Jiro, awkwardly avoiding Jiro’s intense gaze as he tried to sort out what he wanted to say. As his eyes wandered the room, they fell upon a photo of Jiro holding onto Rainie tightly from behind, their faces lit up by joyful smiles. Aaron felt his heart wrench painfully at the image, quickly returning his eyes to Jiro’s as he felt his anger at never having the chance to see Rainie smile that way again, rekindle.
“I know you’ve been telling me not to hang around the Chen office but I can’t just sit around doing nothing while those who ruthlessly murdered my sister roam unpunished,” began Aaron hotly. Seeing no response from Jiro however, Aaron felt himself begin to falter slightly. He had expected to see Jiro frown or scold him, not stare at him so placidly. Regaining his composure, Aaron then continued, “Anyway, today I heard several employees of Chen Finance discussing some interesting development between Selina and Yi Xia. From the sounds of what they were saying, it looked like-”
“Selina Ren has fallen out of favour with Yi Xia, I know,” finished Jiro as he leaned back in his chair with a tired look on his face.
Aaron stared at him dumbfounded. “You knew?”
Jiro nodded. “I have my sources. But this little development is going to affect the plan we have already begun to put in action.”
“That’s what I was thinking when I heard the news… If Selina is no longer favoured by Yi Xia, and we still continue to kidnap her and hold her hostage, would Yi Xia still come after her?” wondered Aaron. He averted his gaze, deep in thought.
Jiro continued to study Aaron, his face not betraying one bit of what he was thinking. After some time, he finally spoke. “The only thing we can do now is continue with surveillance. I believe Selina will regain Yi Xia’s favour in time, as is always the case. However, if things do not go that way… we shall decide what to do then.”
Aaron turned to look back up at Jiro, his eyebrows curving in a slight frown. Any delay in their plan for revenge was unwelcome and he wanted to get this over and done with, once and for all. It wasn’t getting them anywhere, sitting around and just watching what will happen, but Aaron knew full well that they had no other choice. With a sigh, he leant back in his chair, taking the chance to fume over the situation for a little while longer.

Selina dialled her mobile for what was the hundredth time that day, now pacing up and down in her room with a frustrated look on her face. Yi Xia didn’t suspect that she knew about his plans, and as he did the day before, he had dismissed her immediately once they arrived back at the mansion. Whenever she was by herself throughout the day, Selina had been constantly trying to get through to either Danson or Zhi Ping, but the fact that she always met with the voicemail inbox of their respective mobiles frustrated her further. There wasn’t much time left.
Hearing the dreaded voicemail greeting once again from Zhi Ping’s phone, Selina threw the device onto her bed in frustration. The only two people she could rely on at this critical moment were unreachable. Glancing over to her shelves, it only took her a few seconds to come to a decision. She strolled over to press the hidden button to reveal her store of weapons and began arming herself with everything she would need. There was no longer any point in trying to act all innocent around Yi Xia. After all, Yi Xia had said so himself to Ji Li that he would deal with her later, and Selina only knew that Yi Xia’s punishment would be far worse than death itself. She might as well run away and attempt to save Show at least, warning Danson and the others to flee away from Taiwan if possible. If she could accomplish even just that, her conscience would be somewhat free and she could leave this world peacefully.
Strapping her last dagger to her body, Selina closed the compartment and walked over to pick up her phone. Deciding to try and call Danson one last time, she pressed the call button on his number and held it to her ear. The phone rang once… rang twice… rang three times… And just as it was about to be sent to voicemail, Danson finally picked up his phone.
“Xuan? Is that you?” he asked, somewhat surprised that Selina would call him early in the evening. Normally she would only communicate via text messages for fear that someone would overhear.
“Yu Zhe! Finally you picked up your mobile! I have something really urgent to tell you!” said Selina, her heart suddenly racing tenfold as she rejoiced at finally getting through to Danson, but panicking at the news she had to tell him.
“Okay, Xuan… just calm down. I only just came out of an important meeting so that’s why you couldn’t get through to me. What’s happened?” said Danson, calmly despite feeling some of Selina’s nervousness seep into him over the phone. If what she had to tell him had her this worked up, it was definitely bad news.
“Yi Xia doesn’t trust me anymore. He’s sent an assassin after Show and once he’s done with him, he’ll come for you and anyone else that is involved with my past.” Selina sat down on her bed heavily, resting her forehead on the palm of her hand in a defeated pose. “He knows everything, Yu Zhe. He knows that I’ve begun meeting you again and I’m not sure if he knows that I’ve been intending to betray him soon.”
Danson frowned slightly at Selina’s last sentence. “You were going to betray Yi Xia? How?”
Selina sat up straight, realising she had let slip too much. “By the only way I can.” She stood up quickly, changing the topic. “Yu Zhe, we don’t have the time right now to talk about all the details. Ji Li could have found Show already by now and is getting ready to assassinate him, if he hadn’t already done it. Tell me where Show is right now and I’ll send someone over to help.”
“That someone won’t be you, will it?” asked Danson suspiciously.
“It won’t. I can’t leave the Chen Mansion yet, now can I?” bluffed Selina. Although it was technically true that she could not leave the mansion, it did not mean that she would not try.
Danson didn’t seem to believe her. “Don’t worry about it, Selina. I’ll go straight over to him right now with several other officers. I’m sure we’ll be able to protect Show from him.”
“No!” shouted Selina suddenly, then realised she shouldn’t have shouted. She glanced at her door and then lowered her voice. “If you go and make a scene then we won’t be able to get rid of that assassin. I have my own plan for dealing with that fool and that means I need to know where Show is.”
There was a pause over the other end before Danson finally let out a sigh. “It’s roughly 5pm right now… that means Show would have finished his last lecture for the day at NTU about half an hour ago. However, I don’t think the assassin would have struck there because there are too many people roaming about. He should be on the bus heading back home, which means… we only have twenty minutes left before he gets off at his house! Shoot, we’d better hurry, Xuan!” he shouted, telling Selina Show’s address as he ran out of the station before hanging up.
Selina hung up her phone as well, tucking it away into her pocket as she made her way over to the balcony. Opening the glass doors, she walked to the edge and peered over it to the ground several meters below. Her room was located quite high above the ground, too high to just simply jump down. She went back into her room and retrieved the length of rope she had placed on her desk earlier, returning back to the balcony to tie one end firmly to the rail. Tugging on it to check whether it was firmly secure, she then threw the rest of the rope over the edge before climbing over the rail and began her decent to the ground.
Quickly, Selina made her way around the length of the mansion, hiding whenever Yi Xia’s men walked by. She finally reached the Chinese styled gardens of the house, the large ginkgo she had once used as a means of escape still standing. Glancing around her for one last time, she sped over to the base of the tree and began her ascent. As she reached the branch that protruded out over the wall, Selina readied herself to jump down when a voice suddenly startled her.
“Going somewhere, Selina?” asked a somewhat cocky voice from below.
Selina turned on her spot in the tree to see that Calvin was standing a small distance away, an amused look on his face. He took several steps forward, looking down at the ground for where he stepped before looking back up at Selina.
“I hope your little escape right now won’t affect the agreement we have come to, will it?” he asked, still with that cocky look on his face.
Selina angrily stared down at him before answering, “Our agreement no longer stands, Calvin. Yi Xia knows everything about Danson and I am not going to let him assassinate him or anyone from my past.”
Calvin raised his eyebrows slightly, still smiling. “Oh, is that so? You do know that what you are going to do right now will eventually lead to you and everyone precious to you being hunted down throughout all of Taipei, don’t you?” Seeing Selina narrow her eyes further made Calvin’s smile widen. “Ah… I see that you do know that. So then; what are you going to do once you have stopped this new assassin of my father’s? Flee to another country? Hmm… I don’t think that’s a very practical idea. My father has some very powerful friends all over the world and you would constantly have to be on the move to avoid them.”
“Why are you saying all of this to me?” snapped Selina impatiently. Every second she was held up by Calvin meant that Ji Li was closer to assassinating Show.
“Why am I saying this to you? It’s simple, really. You won’t be able to live the peaceful life you want unless you kill my father for me. He’s grown old, Selina, and it’s about time he moves aside for a younger generation to take his place. And I’m not going to let my only ticket to power escape so easily either.” Calvin stared up at Selina with an intense passion burning in his eyes, and Selina realised with a chill how frighteningly similar they were to his father. There was no doubt that Calvin Chen Yi Ru was his father’s son.
“Fine; you have my word that I will return to deal with Yi Xia, but in my own way. I will find a way to kill him and you can take control of this vile organisation, leaving me and the others alone forever.” With that final statement, Selina finally turned and hopped off the branch over to the other side. As she sped away, Selina could faintly hear Calvin’s twisted laughter in the distance, the sound chilling her to the bone.
