Selina pulled up outside of Su Mei’s house around half an hour after she had split ways from Danson and Show. She slowly stepped off the bike, peering at the front gate suspiciously. Her senses were telling her that something about the place wasn’t right and her suspicions were only confirmed when she walked up to the gate and found it open. Removing her gun from the holster on her hip, Selina warily pushed the door open, peering carefully into the gloom for any sign of the intruders. Praying hard that both Su Mei and Jin were somehow safe, she quietly stepped in, holding her gun out before her as she scanned her surroundings.
In the garden, Selina saw more signs of intrusion as she spied broken branches and a smashed pot near the front door. It was obvious that some sort of a fight had begun outside the house, but the complete absence of bodies indicated that it hadn’t ended there. Selina continued on into the house, cautiously pushing the front door open as it squealed on its hinges in the silent night. There could only be two outcomes of the fight; either the intruders had won and Su Mei and Jin are dead, or Su Mei and Jin had both prevailed against the attackers and are now either in hiding within the house or have already escaped. Selina hoped that it was the second case.
It wasn’t until Selina entered the kitchen that she came across the bodies of the two men who had obviously broken into the house, lying dead with gunshot wounds to the chest. Kicking their bodies to check whether they were truly dead, Selina was satisfied when she received no response. Scanning the rest of the kitchen and finding nothing else, Selina then proceeded on to check the bedrooms, hoping that these two would be the only ones she would find.
As Selina stepped into the master bedroom, she suddenly turned to her right, levelling her gun at the person who sat huddled in the corner, nervously holding up a gun of his own in a pair of shaking hands. When Selina recognised who it was, she immediately dropped her hand down to the side as she rushed over.
“Jin… You’re okay,” she whispered in relief as she held his shoulders.
Jin realised that it was Selina and he immediately dropped his gun as he leapt into Selina’s arms, hugging her tightly. “S-Selina Jie… H-help us… Th-they t-t-tried to kill us… and… and… I…” He broke off, unable to continue with what he was trying to say.
Selina cradled his head in her arms as she tried to calm him down. “Shhh… It’s alright, Ah Jin… It’s alright. You can tell me later what happened. But where is Yi Ma?”
Jin pulled away from Selina as he wiped the tears from his eyes, pointing over at the other side of the bed. “I-I hid her over there. She… she got shot by those guys…” Selina immediately stood up and rushed over to the other side of the bed to check on Su Mei. She found her lying on the floor, barely breathing as she clutched weakly at her wound. Selina knelt down by her side, staring blankly as she took in the state she was in while slowly reaching out a hand to stroke Su Mei’s sweating forehead.
“Yi… Yi Ma…” she whispered, feeling deep regret that she hadn’t made it on time to help Zhi Ping’s aunt.
Su Mei stirred from her weak fever, peering blurrily up at Selina in the darkness. She smiled weakly as she recognised Selina, relaxing slightly. “Selina… you came… Zhi… Zhi Ping?” She suddenly took in a deep, laboured breath, wincing in pain as her wound stretched.
Selina grabbed one of her hands to help comfort the older woman, looking on in pity. “I don’t know, Yi Ma. I haven’t been able to contact him all day but I was hoping that he would be here...” Selina moved to try and help Su Mei up. “Can you make it? I’ll help carry you out of here.”
Su Mei shook her head as she tried to push Selina’s arms out of the way. “It’s… it’s no use, Selina… Leave this… old lady… here… Es…escape to… Keelung… Boat… ask for… Leng…” Her breathing became laboured once more and she coughed softly as her grip on Selina’s hand tightened. Selina gripped her tightly back.
“Yi Ma… please, stop… Don’t try to say anymore. I’m going to help you out of here. Jin! Come and-” Selina’s sentence was cut off as Su Mei used the last reserves of her energy to push Selina away.
“Go! Let me die in peace… knowing that you two have escaped!” she wheezed, her eyes screwing up in pain at the sudden exertion.
Selina stared back at Su Mei, hesitating. As much as she knew that Su Mei was right, she couldn’t help but feel that she ought to try and help the older woman somehow. With one last look at the woman, Selina stood, refusing to look back at her as she walked over to Jin.
“Jin, let’s go.” As Jin picked up his gun and stood to follow, Selina paused at the door. “Yi Ma… I regret that we never got to know each other better. Thank you… for everything.”
Su Mei opened her eyes weakly, a small smile lighting her lips as she listened to Selina and Jin’s soft footsteps leave the room. She knew she didn’t have much time left in this world. The gun Zhi Ping had given her several years ago for protection was now with Jin, and it was because of him that those two attackers were now dead downstairs. Taking one, last laboured breath, Su Mei prayed that her nephew, Selina and Jin would all be safe, before she allowed the darkness to take over.

Ella pressed the answer button on her Bluetooth headset, assuming that it would be Danson checking up on whether she had made it to Yangmingshan yet. She had to admit she had the shock of her life when Danson briefly told her what was happening, instructing her suddenly to rush over to Yangmingshan. Even now she was still a little confused about the situation, but nevertheless, the seriousness of Danson’s tone implied that the situation was bad.
“Wei? I’m almost there right now, Danson. Just a couple more minutes,” she said into the headset as she turned her car left.
“Er… I take it you’re busy driving, Ella?” asked an ever-too-familiar voice over the other end.
Ella’s eyes widened in surprise a little as she shifted in her seat. “Chun…! I haven’t heard from you for a couple of days.”
“Aw… Does that mean you missed me?” teased Chun as he chuckled softly. Before Ella could snap back a retort, he said, “I haven’t been very free lately, what with the election date drawing close and Jiro acting a little strange since his girlfriend died. I swear the guy isn’t his normal self anymore.”
“Uh-huh…” said Ella slowly. “Chun, do you have anything important to talk to me about right now? ‘Cause I’m in a really big hurry her-”
A car suddenly appeared out a side street to Ella’s right, speeding straight towards her as if aiming to run into her. She pulled a hard left to try and avoid the oncoming car, the front of her own clipping the other as her wheels spun and she drifted into the other car’s side. Her head snapped wildly as the cars collided, a spray of glass from the windows showering inwards causing small cuts to appear on her face. The two cars continued to skid along the road for a short distance, stuck together, until they finally came to a standstill next to the footpath.
Ella had her forehead resting against the steering wheel as she tried to recover from the shock of the sudden collision, groaning as she felt her sore neck. Slowly raising her head, she peered around her as she heard Chun’s voice still in her ear, her headset still miraculously in place.
“Ella! Ella! What the hell just happened? Where are you?” he shouted repeatedly in her ear.
“I’m fine…” croaked Ella as she noticed the guys in the other car stirring. Quickly, she climbed out the other side of her car as best she could with her injured neck, pausing only to remove her gun from the glove box. Pressing her headset firmly back onto her ear, she then asked, “Chun, can you send someone to get me? I’m in Shilin, a couple blocks away from the Japanese School. And quickly…”
She fired several shots at the guys as they suddenly stepped out their car, quickly hiding back behind their car door as the volley hit them. The few spectators who had gathered to see what had happened quickly scattered at the sound of the gun shots, fleeing the scene as Ella tried to find a way to escape without endangering others. Quickly, Ella ran over to the narrow alleyway that ran between two restaurants, pausing every now and then to see whether her pursuers had caught up. When she saw them suddenly appear behind her, she raised her gun to fire several shots at them before continuing on her way, dodging the few bullets they shot as she emerged out the other end of the alleyway.
A motorbike suddenly pulled short before Ella and she hesitated slightly, wondering if it was someone Chun had sent. But she soon realised that the man wasn’t there to help her as he raised his gun and Ella quickly turned to run, but not quick enough to avoid a bullet lodging itself in her left arm. Raising the gun which was still firmly in her right hand, she sent several shots at her latest pursuer, hitting him squarely in the chest. The man fell down behind her as the other two men who were originally pursuing her emerged from the alleyway, just in time to send a couple of shots at Ella as she turned the corner down another alleyway.
The two men swore in frustration as she slipped out of their sight again, but their frustration was short lived. As they arrived at the entrance to the alleyway, a menacing smile spread across their faces as they found that this alleyway was a dead end. Slowly, they walked down the alley, their eyes scrutinising the piles of rubbish and dumpsters for any sign of Ella. Ella, who was beginning to grow faint with the loss of blood, leant her head back against the wall behind the farthest dumpster as she clutched her bleeding arm. She could hear their steps echo in the silent alley as she tried to keep her breath as quiet as possible, their steps counting down the seconds to her doom. She raised her gun to glance at it, counting the number of shots she had fired so far in her head. If she had counted correctly, then that would mean she had at least one shot left – just enough to take out one of the bastards with her.
As the two men approached her, the first suddenly appeared before her only to be sent to the ground in shock as Ella pulled the trigger on her gun aimed straight at his heart. However, the second man also fell at the exact same moment, as a result of a gunshot wound to the back. Puzzled, Ella stared at the two bodies in confusion, her eyes only widening in surprise when she saw several men in black suits step out before her, guns still aimed at the bodies on the ground. They then turned to look at Ella after they confirmed that the men were dead and it was then that Chun suddenly dashed into the scene before her, rushing to kneel before her as he reached out a tentative hand towards her wound.
“You’re hurt… Lucky… at the Night Markets… going on…?” Half of what Chun was saying to her was lost as fatigue finally took over and her world began to spin out of control.
With a small, weak smile back up at Chun, Ella said before she fainted, “Right on time.”

Danson stood waiting at the edge of the clearing as he peered into the gloomy forest depths, keeping an eye out for any sign of Selina. Only a few minutes ago they had received a call from Chun explaining to them what had happened to Ella, demanding that Danson explain to him what was going on. Danson briefly explained to him what was happening and instructed that Chun should tighten the security around him and Ella – it was possible that Yi Xia could be mad enough to try and attack Ella again but he highly doubted it.
Danson turned his head away from the forest in frustration as he saw no sign of Selina, kicking up the loose dirt in the ground to relieve his stress a little. The others – which consisted of Show, Hebe, the Twins, Hebe’s parents, Show’s foster mother and the Twin’s foster parents - all watched in confusion as Danson paced up and down impatiently. They all had a vague idea why Danson had come to whisk them away from their homes, but what they lacked were the details. After some time, Mike decided he’d had enough of seeing Danson walk up and down for what seemed like the twelfth-hundredth time.
“Stop it, Danson Ge. Your pacing around like this is not only giving us headaches, but it’s also making us all nervous,” said Mike as he grabbed Danson’s arm to stop him. “Try to calm down. I’m sure she’ll make here in one piece if what Show’s explained to us is true.”
Danson allowed Mike to hold onto his arm as he continued to peer into the forest. “I know she’ll be back but I still can’t help worrying. If I lose her again, I truly have no idea how I would be able to continue living.”
Mike stared back at Danson silently, slowly releasing his arm. Like the others, he had always known how deep Danson’s feeling were for Xuan, having seen how long it had taken him to recover from the blow of her ‘death’. But his words just then had struck a chord somewhere within him and he found himself praying along with Danson that Selina would return back safely, for Danson’s sake if no one else’s.
The heavy crunch of leaves as someone stepped on the forest floor sounded from the edge of the clearing, all heads turning in the direction of the sound. Danson immediately rushed over to Selina’s side as he saw her emerge with a teenage boy, and he ignored his presence as he pulled Selina in for a tight hug.
“Xuan… I’m not going to let you leave my side again. It was torture waiting for you to return…” he whispered into her ear as he held her small frame tightly against her.
Selina smiled softly as she returned his hug. “When are you going to trust me? I said I would meet you here and I did,” she whispered back.
Danson’s arms tightened around her. “How can I trust you when you faked your death and left me to mourn you for ten long years?”
Enjoying the comfort of Danson’s strong arms for a few more seconds, Selina finally pulled away from him. “We don’t have time to go over the past now, Yu Zhe.” She then peered past him and felt a small blush creep across her cheeks as she saw the others staring at them, thankful for the darkness hiding it. Composing herself, she then stepped around Danson and headed over to the main group, somewhat nervously meeting with Show and the Twin’s stares.
“Is that… really you, Xuan?” asked Matt in an awed voice. Mike stood next to him with a similar look of surprise on his face. It had been easy to listen to Show and Danson talk about Xuan still being alive, but seeing her alive in the flesh brought home the truth that she truly wasn’t dead.
Selina nodded before turning to look at their foster parents, her eyes then glancing over the Tians before coming to rest on Show’s foster mother. The woman flinched slightly as Selina looked at her, averting her eyes in fear. Selina had expected that reaction from the woman when she woke up, for she had seen her kill a man before her eyes. Finally, her eyes returned to look at Show and the Twins, Jin coming to lean against the post of the hut’s front porch away from the others. Danson came to stand next to Selina, quietly waiting for her to explain what they were going to do from here onwards.
“Am I correct in assuming that you all know who and what I really am?” Seeing them all nod, she then continued, “Then you will know I was once Yi Xia’s most favoured assassin, Dawn.” She saw Jin’s eyes widened in surprise as he turned to stare at her, shocked. He was actually the only one who didn’t know who she truly was and it was because of that reason she had restated her identity so bluntly. “However, Yi Xia has found reason to be suspicious of me and a friend of mine in the Syndicate, due to the fact that I have begun associating with people from my past once more. And for that reason, all of you are now in danger, for Yi Xia becomes paranoid at any slight hint of betrayal and leak of information regarding his organisation.”
The Twin’s foster parents suddenly stepped towards Selina angrily, their fists clenched tightly in a mixture of fury and fear. “Why are we involved? We had nothing to do with your despicable past or life now! Why would he want to kill us when it’s obviously you he wants? Now that you’ve brought us here, he’ll definitely want to kill us!”
Selina calmly stared back at the two, not taking to heart their harsh comments. As she was about to explain, Show’s foster mother suddenly spoke up in a small voice. “They don’t care who they kill in the process, even if it’s just to get to our foster children.” Peering at Selina out the corner of her eye, she then said, “If it wasn’t for her… Show and I…”
Her voice broke as she turned away and sank back into a remorseful silence. Show reached out an arm to pull her in for a hug, comforting her.
Kneeling on the ground before everyone, Selina bowed her head to the ground in apology as Danson dropped down beside her, trying to pull her back up. “I must apologise to everyone for the hardship I have brought into your lives. If I could, I would have done everything in my power to stop everything from ending up this way but I have failed. However, what I can do for you now is offer you a means of escape.”
At this, everyone’s attention piqued. “Escape? How?” asked Mr Tian as the silence steadily grew thick.
Selina rose back up, still kneeling on her knees. “A friend of mine has organised a means of escape for a situation such as this. I am not sure of the details myself, but apparently we must travel to Keelung and ask for a man named Leng. I believe he will have a boat of some sort ready to take us out of the country.”
Again, the others all stared at her in silence thick like a suffocating fog. Yet Selina’s gaze did not waver under the pressure as she met each of their eyes. Finally, Mr Tian then asked, “When do we leave?”
