Chapter 10

.ken's eyes.

“Cut!” Dana said loudly and the music playing had stopped. They had already finished shooting for the day and the sun hadn’t even set. She smiled, proud of herself for finishing ahead of schedule. “Hey, great job,” she said to cameraman standing beside her.

“You too Dana,” he said, as he started fixing up the camera.

She hurriedly walked to where Ken was, which was still around where the F4 had been for the last scene, looking down one of the stars on the ground. For some reason though, the F3 had already dissipated from the spot. “Look,” she said and Ken looked up to meet her eyes. “I’m not going, okay?”

“What?” Ken asked.

“To the bar where Mark works,” she told him. “I’m not going with Jerry and Vanness so you can come with them. I’ve got a lot of other stuff to do anyway.”

“What makes you think I’m not going because of you?” he asked, wondering how she knew. “I don’t care whether you go or not.”

“Fine, then this is just so you know,” she said haughtily then turned on her heel to walk away. “Jeez, you try to be nice to some people…” she muttered.

Ken watched her back as she walked away, and suddenly felt like he had to do something to make it up. She WAS being nice after all. She didn’t deserve his attitude anymore. He sighed as he went after her. “Hey, wait,” he said, catching her arm. “I’m sorry,” he said, turning her to face him.

“Whatever,” she said, pulling away and turning towards another direction.

Ken moved and blocked her way. “I really am,” he said, looking down to look into her eyes. “You’ve been trying to make friends all this time and I just didn’t want to admit that I was wrong about you. I’m really sorry,” he insisted. He was apologizing anyway, so he figured he might as well make it work. “Truce?” he said, smiling at her.

Dana looked up at him, supposedly to say ‘whatever’ nonchalantly, just to shut him up. But he was smiling at her. And it made his face look different somehow. More, friendly, and even, cuter. And his eyes had some sort of weird swirl in them that made them look like two deep pools of dark chocolate—the kind that she loved. She blinked to clear her head of it, and smiled, in the same, friendly way that she had last night when she saw him looking at her from across the table. “Sure,” she said, nodding, and then turned away quickly. They started walking to where they had parked all the vehicles. “But I really can’t go later to Mark’s bar,” she said, changing the subject. “I have some paperwork to finish.”

“Paperwork?” Ken prompted.

“For another project I’m doing,” she said then added mysteriously. “But it’s confidential so I can’t tell you about it.”

Ken nodded, this time, feeling a little disappointed. “Okay,” he said as he looked up and saw that they’d reached the parking lot. “See you tomorrow then.”

“See you tomorrow,” she said, nodding.

“See you tomorrow Dana!” Vanness greeted as he, Jerry and Vic waved their hands.

Dana waved back at them. “Don’t be late!” she joked and as she heard them laugh, turned around and walked away.
