Chapter 17

.private conversation.

“Dana,” Ken called, walking towards their director who had just called it a day. “Can I talk to you for a sec?”

“Sure,” she said, nodding. “Excuse me,” she said to a crew member that she had just been talking to. “Is there a problem?”

“I’m not sure,” he told her. “Can we, uh, go somewhere? I kinda need to talk to you alone.”

She nodded. “I have to return these anyway,” she said, holding up one of the fake cameras they had used for the video, and started for the room where they stored all the props.

Ken followed her and, as soon as they were inside, took a deep breath. He was alone in a room with Dana.

She started walking along the shelves, looking to see where the camera belonged. “What was it you wanted to talk to me about?”

“Last night,” he said.

She froze. She was hoping he’d have forgotten all about it. He was Ken Chu of F4 after all. Who knew how many girls in Asia he’d tried to kiss, and was probably even successful enough to, but wouldn’t really remember anything about?

No, she knew he wasn’t like that. Out of the 4 members of their group, he was the one least rumored to be a playboy, even if he also had his share of girlfriends. The press releases about his love life had always been good, she read from the research mailed to her by Dave a week before they arrived. It was even often mentioned how he still remembered his first love. Still, that didn’t prove that he remembered how flushed her face was last night when she thought he was going to kiss her. He might not even have noticed because it was dark. But then, Ken was looking at her seriously now, much like he had been last night before she had closed her eyes. She turned to avoid his gaze.

“I just want to know, if you felt it,” he said.

“Felt what?” she said, biting her lip, and wishing like hell that she was a good liar. She never understood how she could direct actors to do a better job at acting but was never able to do it herself. It wasn’t like there was a saying that said that those who couldn’t act, direct. Because most directors she knew were also actors. Except herself.

“I don’t know what it was,” Ken said. “But it was there,” he said. “At least it was for me. That’s why I need to know. Because if you didn’t feel it, then it was probably nothing and then I can maybe stop stressing about it and move on, but if you did…”

“Then we should still forget about it and move on,” she said, putting the fake camera back on one of the shelves and walking out as quickly as possible.

“Ready to go?” she heard as soon as she stepped out of the storage room. Jeff was already waiting for her.

Dana felt the blood rush from her face and palms grow sweaty. She knew she shouldn’t feel nervous. She hadn’t done anything wrong. But the concerned look on Jeff’s face made her feel like she did. It made her feel traitorous. She bit her lip and looked up at him, knowing she wouldn’t be able to keep anything from him. He wasn’t just her boyfriend after all, he was also her best friend. “We need to talk,” she said softly.

::author's note::

I'm not really sure about the spelling of Ken's last name. Is it Chu or Zhu? I put 'Chu' because that's the more common one that I see. But if it's not right, just pretend that it is. It's just spelling anyway.
