“Nothing you say is ever stupid,” Jeff assured her with a smile.
“No, this one really is,” she said, looking at him. “Last night when I was at the observatory, before I called you to pick me up, I was talking to someone.”
“So?” he asked, looking at her.
“I was talking to Ken Chu.”
“And?”
“And he tried to kiss me,” she said.
His jaw tightened as he swallowed hard. “Was he successful?” he asked after a pause.
Dana shook her head. “No.”
“Good,” he said, calming down.
“But I wanted him to be.”
Jeff turned his head sharply to look into her eyes. But she had already closed them. “Why?”
“I don’t know,” she said.
“Aren’t you happy with…” his voice trailed off.
“I am,” she replied without hesitation, looking at him. “Very much.”
“Then what’s—“
“I don’t know,” she repeated, and then shook her head. “I just… I can’t stop thinking about him.”
Jeff’s hands had balled into a fist. “Why the hell not?” he asked, unable to hide the anger in his voice.
“I don’t know,” she said, groaning as she buried her head in her hands.
“Then I don’t know what to tell you either,” he said. “If this was just some crush, we’d both just be laughing this off, right?”
“I know,” she said.
“This is different,” he realized.
“It is,” she agreed. “It’s crazy. I hardly know him.”
“But sometimes you don’t really need to know someone to know something’s there, right?”
She nodded, her vision starting to blur. “I’m sorry.”
“Do you still love me?” he asked tentatively.
Dana looked at him with tears welled up in her eyes.
