Chapter 19

.the things you never wish for.

Dana was an hour early when she got to the Griffith Observatory the next day. It was the last day of shooting and although she knew that arriving early wasn’t going to make a difference because the crew wasn’t there yet, she went anyway. She just didn’t want to spend another hour tossing and turning on her bed at home, thinking about her feelings. She needed some air. And the observatory, though it came with all the memories she didn’t want to think about, was still the best place to get some air.

She climbed up the stairs to the balcony and then gasped.

Ken turned as soon as he heard the sound of someone going up the stairs, expecting to see one of the crew members early for the shoot. Instead he saw Dana, looking as cute as ever, with her red hair floating around her shoulders like fire.

“I thought you were gonna be late,” she said, walking towards the ledge and looking out at the mountains, forcing her mind to not think about how good he looked in the black shirt he was wearing.

“I know,” he said, walking towards her. “I didn’t want you to be right.”

She chuckled. “And the others?”

He shrugged. “They didn’t want you to be wrong,” he said.

She laughed. She turned to look at him and squinted at the sun’s light. “Do you know what this last shoot is for?” she asked.

“No,” he said, shaking his head. “All I know is that it’s inside the observatory.”

She nodded. “It is,” she said. “There’s a room there where the galaxy can be projected throughout the entire room. You’d feel like you’re in space.”

“Sounds cool.”

“It is,” she said. “We’re gonna be filming the very start of the song, where you guys wish on a star, and find yourselves in space—the whole song’s like a fantasy, right?”

“Right,” he said. “I really liked its concept.”

“So did I,” she said. “This is also where we’re shooting the end of the song. Where you guys find yourselves in space again, and watch a supernova. Then as its light covers the screen, the song also fades out. It represents the impermanence of things,” she told him. “You know, that you could get anything like, be famous, from wishing on a star, but that star eventually dies, just like careers are bound to fade away after a while.”

Ken didn’t say anything. Then he turned to look at her. “Are we avoiding another awkward silence?” he asked.

“It’s not just the silence that’s going to be awkward,” she said, turning to look at him as well. “I’m in love with Jeff.”

“I know,” he said, nodding.

“And you’re leaving tonight,” she pointed out.

“I know.”

She raised an eyebrow at him. “Is there anything you don’t?”

“Why I love you?” he supplied, the corner of his mouth turning up. “I hardly know you. I even hated you when I first met you. But then…”

“Sometimes you don’t really have to know a person to know that something’s there?”

He nodded. “So tell me,” he said, his voice serious. “Is there something between us?”

“I don’t know how but…” she trailed off. “Jeff is everything I’ve ever dreamed of. He’s got the guitar, he’s got a great voice, he’s really smart, he knows how to make me laugh, and he’s given me everything I’ve ever wished for. Love, hope, friendship,” she smiled. “A new drum set,” she added mischievously.

“I understand,” he said, looking away.

“I don’t think you do,” she said. “You could get anything from wishing on a star. But the star eventually dies. What lasts are the things you never wish for, but eventually get anyway.”

Ken looked up at her, his eyes incredibly hopeful.

“Dave called me last night,” she said. “And he said that your company could use a new director. One that would have a different point of view from all those from Taiwan, but could direct other artists as well, you know, because of the language? Anyway, I told him—“

He didn’t wait for her to finish. He leaned closer and kissed her quickly, stopping only to look into her eyes for her reaction, and when he got it, his smile widened and he kissed her again, slowing it down, taking his time, knowing, though he still couldn’t believe it, that she loved him back.
