Chapter 4

Dana looked at her watch and frowned. They were already 30 minutes behind schedule. “Shit,” she cursed. The reason why she wanted a scene inside the observatory was so they could finish early today as well. That’s why she decided to shoot just one more scene. But the F4 seemed intent on not letting her get her way. They had been incredibly difficult all afternoon. She walked to where they were. “Why don’t we try it this way,” she said, pacing around. “Jerry faces the mountains, Vanness then sits at the ledge, and then faces the mountains, Vic then comes up the stairs, joins Jerry and Vanness and then faces the mountains, and Ken walks up behind all of you and then faces the mountains. Would that be easier, now?”

“I don’t have to jump down anymore?” Vanness asked.

“No,” she shook her head. “Just sit there, and look at what he’s looking at,” she said, referring to Jerry.

“Where will I come from?” Ken asked.

Dana paused to think, and then looked around. “From behind the camera,” she said, nodding slowly. “Yeah, I think it’d work better that way.”

She looked at the four tall guys who’d been giving her a hard time—correction, three. She looked at Ken. He’d been the most professional of all of them. But of course, he was also the snottiest off camera, and she couldn’t help but hate him more for not making any mistakes for her to point out like she did with the others. She frowned, just wanting to get the scene over with. “Did you get that?” she asked them all.

The F4 nodded, and so did the crew members around.

“Great,” she said, and walked back to where she had been standing earlier.

Ken followed her.

She turned back to look at him and wondered why he was following her. And then she remembered that she had told him to come from behind the camera, where she was always standing. She turned front again and continued walking.

“Action!” she said and the song started playing.

Jerry started singing along as he stood up straight and looked at the mountains. When he finished his line, Vanness immediately walked towards him as he sang his lines. He jumped up to sit on the ledge. And then somebody covered Dana’s eyes.

“What the--?” she said, surprised, and tried to get the hands off her eyes. The hands loosened, and then went around her waist. She looked up behind her and smiled. “You’re early,” she whispered.

“You’re late,” Dana’s boyfriend since college, Jeffrey Evans, said in a smooth, low voice.

“I know. I tried to finish as early as I could, but they’re just not cooperating,” she said, leaning into him, but had turned back to watch Vic stand behind Vanness and turn his head towards the mountains.

Vic had finished singing his lines. And the music was still playing. But Ken wasn’t anywhere in the scene. And Dana hadn’t said ‘cut’.
The crew got confused.
So did the F3.
They all turned to look at Dana behind the camera.

That’s when Dana came to. “Right,” she said, jumping away from Jeffrey’s arms. “Cut,” she said, half-laughing, and then looked around. She saw Ken standing behind her and Jeff, still there. “What are you still doing there?” she asked, smiling.

Ken looked behind him to see if she was talking to anyone else. But there wasn’t anybody there. He turned and raised an eyebrow at her. Was this the same Dana who’d been biting his head off all day? What was she doing smiling?

“Well?” Dana prompted.

Right, Ken thought. The bigger issue really WAS what he was doing still standing there when Vic had already finished singing his lines. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I guess I spaced out there for a while,” he said, even though he knew perfectly that he didn’t 'space out'. He was looking the whole time at Dana and the guy he assumed to be her boyfriend, wondering why he was surprised to find out she had a boyfriend. It wasn’t like she was bad looking to not have one after all.

Dana sighed, but it didn’t sound anymore like she was mad or irritated. “Okay,” she said calmly. “Let’s do that scene again, but this time, maybe we can just start with Vic going up the stairs.”

The whole crew, along with the F4 turned to her in surprise. It was the first time she didn’t ask for the scene to be repeated from the top. She smiled. “Is that okay with everyone?”

Ken furrowed his eyebrows and looked around. Everyone seemed to be fine with it. Was he the only one who noticed her change in attitude?

“Great,” she said, and clapped her hands. “Vanness at the ledge, and Vic’s at the last two steps of the stairs,” she said and then turned to Ken, smiling. “Don’t space out this time,” she told him and Ken felt his muscles tense. Was she actually joking with him? He nodded nervously and they both turned back to where the F3 was as Dana said, “Action.”

“Good job everyone, that’s a wrap!” Dana said as soon as she cut the last scene that they shot. She turned to Jeff who was standing behind her, holding her hand the whole time. “I just have to say something to the crew,” she said.

Jeff nodded, letting her hand go.

The F4 watched as Dana walked from behind the camera towards Dave who was talking to some crewmembers.

“Did anybody else notice the wicked witch turn into a fairy godmother?” Ken asked, gesturing to Dana’s direction.

“Sure did,” Vanness replied.

Jerry nodded in agreement.

“She must really be into that guy,” Vic said, nodding his head towards Jeff. “She’s been smiling ever since he arrived.”

“Though I can’t see why,” Ken said, frowning at Jeff’s direction.

“I don’t really care, as long as she’s not hassling US anymore,” Vanness said.

“Yeah,” Jerry agreed.

“Right,” Ken said, nodding, as he looked towards Dana who was still smiling like hell as she walked towards her boyfriend. He rolled his eyes. “Who cares?” he said, and turned back to his friends.
