“Jeff,” Dana called, as she turned and walked towards F4’s table.
Jeff followed her.
“Hey, guys, what are you doing here?” she asked when she got to where they were.
“Looking for you,” Vanness said. “You never told us you had a hidden talent.”
Dana rolled her eyes. “You don’t have to say that,” she said, as she looked around for the pub’s manager. She saw him, and gave him a sign. “Of course this rounds on us,” she told them.
“You mean, this place still does that?” Vanness asked, impressed.
“Does what?” Jerry asked.
“Serve free beer to friends of the band,” Dana replied. “That’s why we like it here, right?” she said, nudging Jeff who was standing beside her. “This is Jeff, my boyfriend, by the way,” she said and turned to Jeff, “that’s Vanness, Vic, Ken and Jerry,” she said, pointing to each of the 4.
“Hey,” Jeff said, nodding to them in greeting, and then turning to Dana. “Listen, we still have to fix the equipment, another band’s coming up next.”
“Right,” she said and turned to the F4. “We have to go, I guess I’ll just—“
“No,” Jeff interrupted. “It’s fine. You can hang. I’ll take care of our stuff, okay?”
Dana looked at the F4, as if to ask for permission to stay.
“Yeah, we were just about to ask you to sit down,” Jerry said.
“Okay then,” she smiled then turned to Jeff. “Take care of my drums,” she said pointedly.
“No problem,” he said, smiling back as he gave her a quick kiss on the lips and walked back to the stage where the rest of their band was fixing their equipment.
By that time, Vanness had already pulled up a chair for her to sit on.
She sat facing Ken at the round table. “So, how are you guys? Did you enjoy the show?” she asked, smiling at them amiably.
Ken looked away as the F3 answered her. If he didn’t know better, he’d say she was one of the nicest people he’d ever met. Her smile was one of the friendliest he’d ever seen. But he couldn’t help but remember her haughty looks and snide remarks earlier at the set. He couldn’t believe the F3 had already forgotten about them. Then again, maybe she was just being professional, and this was how she really was, friendly, and always smiling. She had proposed a truce with their song earlier after all. Or maybe she’s planning something, he thought, and then looked at her as she tucked her hair behind her ears, and noticed for the first time that like him, she had a lot of piercing on her left ear, though she had several more on her right. She was still talking with the F3, but then she glanced at him and saw him looking. He was about to look away, when she raised his eyebrows at him as if in greeting and smiled.
He got confused. Was he supposed to smile back? Or say something? Anyway, did she really think that they were friends just because she dedicated a song to them and was giving them free beer? And what the heck was that sudden rush of warmth he felt as he looked into her blue-green eyes? He looked away without doing anything. Maybe the F3 were easy to manipulate, but she should think differently of him. He didn’t forget people asking him to quit just like that. And if she really wanted to make friends with him, she was going to have to try a lot harder than flashing him gorgeous smiles.
