Chapter 17

.shove.

The program went fine and as more issues sprung up from the awards given, the issue on Jerry and Liz was quickly forgotten. Towards the end of the TNMA, all the reporters were already asking how those who hadn’t won, Vanness and Ken not included, felt about their loss—not how Jerry and Liz were obviously just forcing their smiles and laughs all throughout the show, although there were still a few commentators noticing how awkward and stiff both hosts were and how they shouldn’t be hosting events as big as the TNMA.

Jerry heard about this and as he went inside the dressing room while Vic was performing the last intermission number out on the stage, he sighed and again realized how right Liz was. It wasn’t humanly possible to please everybody.

Liz had heard about the bad comment on her hosting too but was sighing about a different thing as she walked into the women’s dressing room as Vic Zhou performed on stage. She was sighing because the rapport that she and Jerry had more than developed yesterday was now gone, and it’s what resulted to their bad performance.

She slumped down on one of the chairs in the dressing room, tired, but more importantly, dismayed at how lousy her idea of hosting the TNMA with Jerry Yan turned out to be. What was she thinking anyway when she volunteered them? She’d never hosted a show before. And neither had Jerry.

It’s because you wanted to get closer to Jerry Yan, an irritating voice inside her said. She shook her head to make it go away, but knew in her heart that it was true.

She had liked Jerry the moment she heard about him and had been jealous of Barbie for her role as San Cai for the longest time. Sure, she worked with many different handsome actors too. Sean, for instance, was even one of the nicest guys she’d ever worked with. But none of them even came close to making her feel the way Jerry did, even when she just saw him on television, or would pass by him at premieres, and other drama stuff, and especially when she finally got to actually talk to him, and see him smile—for her.

“Liz, Liz, Liz,” she said silently to herself as she shook her head. If anyone found out that even an actress as famous as she was, gushed like any other fan whenever Jerry was involved, she was sure that they wouldn’t believe it. But then, it wasn’t really as if she was ever as strong as Barbie Hsu, whom she regarded as the only woman to be immune to F4’s charms—even Dao Ming Shi’s, anyway.

“Oh, sorry, I didn’t know anyone was in here,” Liz heard and looked up to see, no less than the person she was just thinking about. Barbie Hsu.

“Oh, hi Liz,” Barbie greeted and started to leave.

“No, wait,” Liz called. “You can stay. This dressing room’s not exclusive.”

“Really?” Barbie said, walking back inside. “Thanks, I just need to sit down,” she said, sitting on the couch that faced the chair Liz was at.

“Where’s Dee?” Liz asked.

“Meeting some new guys? Who knows?” Barbie joked and they both laughed. “Where’s Jerry?”

Liz bit her lip, thinking whether to answer her question or not. She shrugged. “Meeting some new guys?” she said, joking as well.

Both of them laughed again.

“Knowing Jerry though, he probably IS meeting some new guys—you know, producers and stuff, giving him new job offers for dramas and movies…” Barbie’s voice trailed off. “You know, I’ve really never met anyone as career-oriented as Jerry. He’s really focused, at what he wants, don’t you think?”

“I think sometimes he’s a little too focused,” Liz replied honestly.

Barbie shrugged. “I guess you’re right,” she said. “But then, if he wasn’t that hardworking, do you really think he’d still be THE Jerry Yan?” she asked, and then laughed when she saw Liz’ puzzled look. “I’m sorry, I just really have this tendency to babble when no one’s interrupting me,” she said and started to look around. “Where is Dee anyway? It’s usually her job to shut me up—or interrupt me at least.”

Liz laughed. “It must be really fun to do the same work as your sister. I’ll bet your family doesn’t complain that you sometimes prioritize your work over them.”

“Oh no,” Barbie shook her head. “Dee and I never. We swore to our mom that our family will always come first before our career. I guess Jerry’s just different. But I know he’ll come around eventually. I’m sure that deep down, he really knows what really matters anyway. He’s probably just too busy to notice,” she said and looked at Liz. “Or maybe he needs another shove,” she said, shrugging and then standing up to leave. “I gotta go, I’m the last presentor.”

“Wait,” Liz called. “Another shove, what do you mean ANOTHER?” she asked.

But Barbie was already out the door.
