Jerry Yan was at her door!
She quickly reached for a robe and a hairbrush and as she brushed her hair, heard the doorbell ring a second time. She looked at the door of her apartment. No guy had ever rung her bell twice before. If she didn’t answer right away, they always just assumed she wasn’t interested or that she was out. It occurred to her just how different Jerry really was from other guys.
Sure, showing up at a girl’s house just before midnight and insisting that she open the door weren’t really commendable manners, but it showed just how determined he was in everything he decided on doing. And that’s what she had always liked about him.
Wait! she suddenly scolded herself. What was she thinking?! She was supposed to be mad at Jerry Yan! He stood her up! And no guy could ever get off easy for standing Liz Chang up.
She opened the door, if only to ask him to leave.
But then Jerry suddenly shoved a bouquet of peach roses in front of her nose and gave her a sheepish smile and her insides instantly melted. “Are you ready for our date?” he asked.
Liz looked at him like he’d just grown extra limbs. “What date? You brought Ella Chen to the TNMA,” she reminded him.
“Right,” he agreed. “But that’s just something my manager asked me to do. It’s no different from acting with her on the set,” he explained. “You understand. It’s what any professional would do.”
“Professional,” she echoed with bitterness. “Whatever,” she said, starting to shut the door.
But Jerry stopped her. It wasn’t going as well as he wanted, but he wasn’t finished anyway. “Besides,” he started. “I asked you yesterday if you’d be my date for tonight, not necessarily for the TNMA,” he said and then looked at his watch. “And I still have around ten minutes to go before tonight ends, so technically…” his voice trailed off, but the hope in his eyes was still there.
Liz opened her mouth to tell him off when she realized he actually had a point. She closed her mouth and frowned. She was still not letting him get off easy. “Look,” she started, wishing he didn’t have to look so cute holding a bouquet of the exact kind of flowers that she liked. “Just because you’re all that, doesn’t mean you can play with people’s emotions and get away with it because of 'technicality',” she said, her tone angrier on the last word.
To her surprise, Jerry grinned.
She furrowed her eyebrows. “What are YOU so happy about?” she asked, looking up at him.
“You really think I’m all that?” he said, his smile widening as he leaned closer towards her.
She shook her head, still looking up at him. “I think you’re a self-absorbed, pig-headed, egotistical, arrogant, conceited, selfish—stop showing me those dimples!” she exclaimed, squeezing her eyes shut.
Jerry let go of the bouquet of roses as he chuckled and leaned even closer. “Then stop making me smile,” he whispered, just before he closed his own eyes and gave her a long, sweet, kiss.
