The next day at work, Allie seemed more than preoccupied. She made three wrong orders and switched two easy orders around. Sunny noticed something wrong the minute he caught her mistake, it was unlike her to do such a thing "Allie!" he called to her after a customer complained about his wrong order. She walked over looking unfaltered by the situation "What's wrong with you?" he asked with concern. "You never make mistakes."
She looked up "No one's perfect."
He sighed "Okay, now I know something's definitely wrong. Tell me."
She looked around for an escape route. Her only chance was Steve who walked through the door in a silver shiny suit. "Nothing. Sunny, I want to get back to work. I'll be more careful next time." she added before rushing off to greet Steve. "Hi Steve!" she said brightly.
He took a step back and put up his guard "What are you going to do to me?" he said with fear in his voice.
She twitched her head to the side "What do you mean? I'm not going to harm you. I just wanted to seat you."
He eyed her carefully "Something's wrong." he said with observation.
She laughed nervously "Of course not!" she wondered how even Steve noticed.
"First of all, you have not made a comment on my suit." he brushed off a lint that landed on his left shoulder "Second of all, you are in a hurry to help me. Lastly....I...well, I can't think of it right now. But I know something's wrong."
Allie groaned "Stop trying to be observant. Nothing is the matter, what is wrong with you people?" she quieted her voice when a few people turned to look at her. "Sorry." she closed her eyes and inhaled a deep breath "Let's start over. What can I do for you sir?" she gave her most professional smile.
"I want my waitress back." Steve frowned "You're scaring me."
She rolled her eyes "Do you want to eat or what?" her tone very much frustrated.
He smiled "That's my girl." he nodded "I would like a table by the window please."
Allie looked around and they were all taken "Sorry, they're all full. Would you settle for a special room?"
Steve pouted "Can't you kick some people out of the table or something?" he turned and found a couple beginning to leave, he pointed to that table "That one's open." he didn't wait for Allie to seat him or even have the bus boy clean off the table as he seated himself. He let out a comfortable sigh "I like this seat."
She waved for the bus boy and he quickly cleared the table for Steve. Allie picked up the receipt and asked "What would you like to eat?"
"Anything you recommend." he smiled.
She tilted her head "You're not Nick, I can't just conjure up something and hope you'll like it. You're pickier than he is." she said straightforwardly.
"I resent that. I am as much not picky as Nick is." he argued.
She smiled "Now that did not make any sense." he crossed his arms as she nodded "Okay, I give up. How does peiking duck with snow peas sauteed in garlic sauce sound?"
Steve nodded with obvious approval "Perfect."
She collected his menu and began towards the kitchen when she turned back to him "Nick is meeting you today?" she only wondered why he didn't take the special room.
He shook his head "No. I don't have to meet him to eat here do I?" she shook her head "Actually, I'm waiting for this girl to pass by. She works across the street in that building." He pointed to the high rise building.
Allie nodded "I see. I thought you were married?" she asked confused.
"Divorced now." he put up his unringed hand.
She concealed a laugh "I wonder why." she walked away before he could say anything else. After a while, his food came as Allie served the dishes "Still no girl?" she asked when his eyes were glued to the life outside.
He shook his head "I guess she's not working today." he sighed but began eating his lunch.
Allie shrugged her shoulders helplessly "Well, if that's all you need, I'm gonna go on my break now." he waved her away as she took off her apron and hung it on her spot in the kitchen. She walked to the back door and was suprised to see Josie there.
"I've been waiting for you." she had pulled out two comfortable chairs for them "Have a seat."
Allie sat down happily "So what's up? I take it you want to ask me what everyone has been asking me?"
She nodded "Smart. No wonder Sunny likes you." Alli's smile turned to a frown at the comment "Sorry. I didn't mean-"
Allie shook her head "No, no problem...." she paused before she began talking about her dinner experience with the Lai's "Remember when I told you about Josh's dad?"
Josie rolled her eyes "Yeah, I wish I was there to tell him off." she recalled the situation her friend had to be in to visit Josh at the hospitatl.
"Well, you thought he was bad. His son, Joey is a hundred times worse, and I'm NOT exaggerating." she let out a sigh, happy to finally tell someone.
Josie looked thoughtfully at Allie "Did youi tell Josh how you felt? What did Joey say to you exactly?"
Allie snickered "He basically called me a whore." Josie clapped her hand over her mouth in disbelief "It gets worse. He said after Josh is done with me, he'll take over."
"UGH! That sicko! You have to tell Josh." she urged.
"NO!" she shook her head vehemently "His relationship with his younger brother isn't good already. If I crush that last bit of hope, they will never get along." she had her reasons, but Josie felt different about the situation.
"Look at it this way, if this big headed egotistical chauvenistic pic tries something with you, Josh would be the first to defend you right?" Allie nodded and Josie continued "So if he doesn't even know his rude comments or intentions, how will he ever protect you?"
Allie nodded "I guess you're right. But I don't think I should tell him just yet. I mean, he told me I don't ever have to see them again."
Josie looked a little more relieved "I guess. But promise me that you'll tell him one day." Allie nodded with a smile. "Good girl." she patted Allie's head like a puppy. "Okay, so how is it going with Josh?"
Allie was tried to find the right word but only ended up say "It's going...good."
"You know what I mean Allie." Josie pushed "I mean your feelings for him. Are they there?"
"I don't know. Maybe I need more time? But he is sweet to me." she added. Josie frowned and she knew it wasn't a good enough answer. "I know it seems like I'm playing with his feelings, but it's hard to tell. We don't see each other enough."
Josie nodded "I see your point. But I hope you will be true to your feelings." she eyed her friend firmly "It's not fair for anyone, especially you."
Allie smiled "You sound more like my mother by the day."
The girls laughed "I guess, she's a beautiful lady then." Josie quipped.
Allie tightened her lips "Hmm, not really. Her nose is small, her eyes are small and her lips are small...hmm, I guess you two do look alike." she teased her friend openly. They both laughed while Josie began beating up her friend.
****************
When they returned from their breaks, they found Amy and Sunny talking in a deep conversation. There were a few laughs and giggles. Josie looked at them suspiciously while Allie walked by with a polite smile and nod at the two of them.
Josie had a different idea as she tried to evesdrop on the conversation. She began to shift slowly closer towards Sunny's back. He knew what she was trying to do as he covered her face with her hand and pushed her roughly away "Get back to work you little nosy kid!"
She struggled to get his plastered hand off her face "Ew! I'm gonna get pimples now!"
He raised an eyebrow "You won't get a boyfriend with that face anyways."
She rolled her eyes "Don't be sour because you can't get the girl you want."
He turned to Amy, who smiled sheepishly at their little argument "There is no business for you here. Run along now." he pushed her roughly.
She stuck out her tongue and walked over the next waiting customer. She quckly took their order and walked over to Allie and whispered. "I almost overheard what they were saying. If you can diverge his attention, I'll get the girl to talk."
Allie laughed with her head shaking "Josie, I don't really care what they are talking about. It could be business for all we know. If he wants to tell us, he'll tell us."
Josie looked at her friend with disgust "How did you become so righteous?" She flipped her head at her friend "You are not the girl I met in Hawaii!" she walked away with her head in the air.
Allie continued to laugh, her friend was such a clown sometimes. But in all honestly if it wasn't for Josie, she would still be confused or even more confused. For the rest of the night, she tried hard to concentrate on her work and Sunny was relieved when she made less mistakes.
