Peering inside the plastic bag Charlene had thrown at me, I was distraught to find rubbing alcohol, Q-tips, ointment, tincture, Mickey Mouse bandages, and even cough medicine inside. The last two items provoked a smile from me. Silly girl. She obviously had no idea what items were needed to treat wounds, so she just grabbed whatever was in sight, and emptied the shelves of the nearest convenient store.
Guilt suddenly consumed me as I recalled the slanderous charges I had made against Charlene. Shit. And I had just yelled at her and made her cry too. Nic! What could you have possibly been thinking to say those hurtful words to her?
After I tied a piece of cloth I found in my drawer around my chest wound to cease the flow of blood, I ran out the door, intending to chase after the girl I had injured. On the way downstairs, I pondered over the cryptic message Charlene left me. Some place where she doesn’t always come second? What did that mean?
*I rewound our conversation.* “Even Gillian –”
That’s it! She thought there was something going on between Gillian and me. No need to ask where she got such foolish ideas. I mentally cursed myself for seating her next to those brainless idiots at the bar.
When I arrived at the bar, I was greeted by the sight of one of my past girlfriends. My lip turned up in distaste as I rolled my eyes. Seeing me, she immediately clung onto my arm and whispered seductively, “Nic! I’m free tonight. Care to come to my room and chill?”
“Um…”
“Amanda,” she offered.
“Amanda, from now on, there is nothing between you and me.”
“What? I don’t understand.”
“You know perfectly well what I mean. I want to breakup.” I was about to coldly stride past her towards the door to find Charlene when something on her ankle caught my eye and made me halt. “You, you, you. Come over here!”
I pointed at all the girls at the bar I distinguished wearing similar crystal bracelets, and motioned for them to queue up in front of me. Retrieving the key I kept in my shirt pocket, I tossed it to Amanda. “I don’t want to see anyone wearing a crystal anklet by the time I get back. Otherwise, you will all suffer the full consequences.” Then, I turned my attention to the rest of the people at the bar. “Listen up everyone.” The bar quieted down immediately. “From today onwards, I, Nicholas Tse, will have one and only one girlfriend. Any objections?” Everyone shook their heads meekly. I smiled coldly out at the general response. “Who talked to my girlfriend this afternoon? Step up.”
“Which girlfriend?” One of the men with a painted Mohawk bravely stepped up. Yep. He was definitely one of those big mouth rascals who had the guts to disrespect Charlene.
“The one you insulted.” I gave him a deadly glare, informing him that I knew he said something to Charlene and that he wouldn’t be let off the hook so easily. I smirked callously as he gulped. He guiltily stood up and walked towards me. A dozen others did the same. “Anyone care to repeat what you said earlier to my girlfriend?”
The foolhardy one who had just spoken quickly made his excuse. “Nic Ge, we felt that she wasn’t up to your standards. She acted all cocky and superior to Gillian! We only tried to humble her. That sneaky girl must have backstabbed us and–”
“Silence!” My voice echoed in the eerily silent bar while I grabbed a glass bottle of beer nearby and slammed it down on his head, stopping him in mid-sentence. Blood dripped down from the jagged shard of glass I held in my hand. I dropped the glass and pulled the now quaking man up by the neck. Clenching my other fist, I growled at him dangerously, “She didn’t backstab anyone. In fact, she didn’t do anything at all except run from me.” I pushed him away. Looking back up, I announced to the group of men before me, “Let this be an example of what will happen to you if you ever talk like that to my girlfriend, Charlene, again. I see I have been too soft on all of you. How dare you speak to my girlfriend in this vulgar manner? If she doesn’t forgive me by tomorrow, all of you are in big shit!”
Suddenly, one of the men I had sent out to find Charlene came back and whispered in my ear. “Nic Ge, Charlene Jei is drinking heavily in Daniel’s disco on Foggy Avenue.” I dismissed the messenger and addressed the clusters of people inside the bar, “I want to say this for the first and last time. Gillian is like a sister to me, and the only feelings I have for her are that of an older brother. If I hear one more word about Gillian and me, I will personally slice off your tongues! Understood?”
Striding authoritatively out the door, I jumped onto my motorcycle and drove straight away to Daniel’s disco. Once at the disco, I quickly spotted Charlene with my vigilant eyes. She sat with several empty bottles of beer in front of her, and was starting to down another bottle of beer. Two men nearby had their lustful eyes on her. Promptly, I walked over to her and seized the bottle out of her hands. While sending the two men beside Charlene death glares, I pulled her firmly by the hand out the disco.
~OMNISCIENT POV~
From afar watched a cruel, dark man whose once handsome features were distorted by his present demonic obsession and hatred. His vile, jealousy-filled eyes did not leave them even once.
As the two left the bar, the spiteful beast thought to himself, ‘Nicholas Tse. This is the last straw. You dare come to my terrain and steal my girl? Well, you’re in for a treat.’
~NIC’S POV~
Outside, I caught Charlene just as she was dropping to the ground, wasted. Whilst I carried her in my arms, I mused, ‘What should I say to her?’ Despite the countless situations I had encountered in the past years of dating with all categories of girls, I could still be considered a green amateur at apologizing to girls.
“Uh…Charlene, I’m sorry for acting so rudely and harshly today. Lately, I’ve been having a rough time dealing with a rival gang…” I stopped and sighed. Who was I kidding? Obviously, my apologies were falling on deaf ears, since Charlene was drunk. It would be morning before I could actually apologize to her and exonerate myself of my guilt.
The trip to my room could not be considered an easy one although it wasn’t exactly deprived of enjoyment as the drunken Charlene formed an adorable picture. Charlene incessantly shifted in my arms and would not stay put in one position until I finally allowed her to ruffle my hair. I burst out laughing! Was she really drunk or was she faking? O_o Angry at myself for having this ignominious thought, I immediately pushed the idea away. Charlene wouldn’t pretend to be drunk!
At last, I was able to drop Charlene down on the bed in my room. I proceeded to change her into more comfortable clothes.
‘Nic, don’t look,’ I ordered myself. Unfortunately, being tempted as I was, I looked – and grinned boyishly. She was wearing good-girl white cotton underwear with Sleeping Beauty on the front. Quickly, I averted my eyes and after much effort, managed to put a shirt and pair of shorts on her. Then I pulled up the covers and curled up on the bed beside her. Gazing down at the unconscious young woman, I discovered that Charlene did look like an innocent Asian Sleeping Beauty.
It made me chuckle to see her mumbling in her sleep as she kicked away her blankets like a child. I leaned down close to listen, intrigued by what she was saying.
“I-I don’t w-want a one-night stand…N-Nic…I d-don’t want a one-night stand…*hiccup*….”
Smiling, I whispered, “Alright. I promise. No one-night stands between us.” I kissed her gently on the forehead and fell asleep, holding Charlene in my arms.
