Chapter 10

Son & Daughter

Mr. Cho's mansion

When they arrive in front of the mansion, Mr. Cho gets out on his own before the driver could come over to open his door for him. Ray and Jessica follow. Kevin's a step behind. The driver walks over to Mr. Cho, apologizing.

Mr. Cho: It's ok, Cliff. It's my birthday today. I want you to have the rest of the day off.

Cliff: Thank you, sir.

Cliff goes to the front door to unlock it for Mr. Cho to enter before he leaves. Ray follows in, starting another conversation with Mr. Cho.

Jessica, seeing Kevin walking in a dazed, monitors him more closely.

Jessica *tapping on Kevin's shoulder*: Are you ok?

Kevin: Yea, of course! *smiles*

Jessica: You were quiet the whole way. I thought there's something wrong. Is it Ray? Did he say something? You know Ray has a big mouth.

Kevin: It has something to with him, but not because he said something. I was just thinking about some coincidences before. I'll tell you later.

Jessica: Ok then. Let's enter.

Kevin waves his hand, signaling for Jessica to go first. He follows her through the front door.

When they're all inside, Mr. Cho told Kevin to lock the door. Then Mr. Cho leads them to the garden in the back.

Jessica: It's so nice out here.

Mr. Cho smiles before speaking again.

Mr. Cho *clearing his throat*: I used to have a son and a daughter. I haven’t seen them for 21 years now. It was because of what I did in the past. I guess I was young and greedy. *turns around to face them* you all should cherish what you have right now and not look for something further than this. *looking at Jessica* You might not know it, but she’s the most important girl in your life and you’ve found her. *looking at Ray* So I wish you wouldn’t look for anyone else.

Ray steals a glance at Jessica and looks back to Mr. Cho. He feels a bit uneasy with what Mr. Cho’s saying, feeling like he’s crazy to actually get what Mr. Cho’s saying. He guesses that Mr. Cho is like his father. A greedy man, who never knows his own limits. He knows he’ll never repeat what his father did.

Ray becomes shocked. He realizes that there are way too many coincidences to be real. Could Mr. Cho be? No. He couldn’t! If he’s his father, then he would already say so, right? Or he’s waiting for Ray to forgive him? Ray decides not to jump to conclusions so he listens carefully to what Mr. Cho has to say next.

Mr. Cho turns back to look at the scenery in front of him before he continues.

Mr. Cho: I wish I could undo what I did, but I can’t. I can only hope that my son will forgive me. *Turns around to look at Ray* My daughter, I don’t know where she is anymore. Seventeen years is a long time. Finding a person who is all grown up now is even harder.

Jessica: Does that mean you know where your son is?

Kevin looks at Mr. Cho’s expression carefully while waiting for him to reply. Ray tenses up a bit.

Mr. Cho: I’m not sure. I have some clues now. But there are tons of people having my son’s name. I don’t want to jump to conclusions and give some young man a scare. *chuckles*

Jessica: Well, it’s a good start, sir.

Mr. Cho smiles at Jessica.

Ray *clears his throat*: What did you do that your son and daughter couldn’t forgive you?

Kevin & Jessica: Ray!

Mr. Cho: It’s ok. *sighs* I have to live with the consequences.

Jessica * cuts him off before he could go on*: You don’t have to tell us anything, Mr. Cho. It’s your personal matters and we’re just here to help you with renovating your house.

Kevin and Ray give Jessica a look. Although Kevin tries to stop Ray from asking personal questions along with Jessica, but he’s still curious on what Mr. Cho has to say. Ray, on the other hand, wants to clear his suspicions. He knows that he shouldn’t be asking it in that way, but he has to know for sure. He just have to take the risk. Now the chance has passed. He couldn’t help but lets out a sigh like Mr. Cho.

Mr. Cho sits down at one of the chairs and signals for them to sit down with him. They talk some more and have some tea. Mr. Cho tells them a bit about his family and how his wife left him, but not revealing the true reasons behind it. He only gives out subtle hints here and there. Kevin and Ray ask questions sometimes, making it casual that they want to help him and need more information. Jessica remains quiet for most of the time.

Kevin, Ray, and Jessica leave to see another client around 9:40.
