Chapter 12

Angel of My Heart

Wallace couldn't concentrate on his work all day. He keeps fidgeting and jumps every time the phone rings. He does everything but his normal routine. However, he doesn't dare to daydream again, knowing Mr. Zhao’s monitoring vibes are on high. He couldn't risk being caught like this morning at the meeting. He steps out of the building for some fresh air to calm himself down at lunch but it only works temporarily. He doesn’t dare to go next door to see if Cyndi’s around since he doesn’t want to catch Cyndi eating lunch with her boyfriend or maybe find out something that would distract himself further from his work.

Finally the work day ends around 5 and he is more ready than anything to leave. He collects all the paperwork that he haven’t finish – which is a lot comparing to his usual progress – and puts it in his briefcase for late night work.

He leaves the building without talking to Vincent or others first. He rushes over to the realtor agency next door. He slows down when he enters through the glass door, not wanting to look desperate if Cyndi spots him.

“May I help you?” A girl at the front desk asked.

Wallace smiles. “Is Miss Cyndi Wang in?”

“She’s on the second floor. Are you her brother?”

“She has a brother?”Wallace asked, thinking to himself. He notices the girl giving him weird looks since he just faded out again so he focuses his attention on her once more. “No. I’m just a friend of Cyndi. I’m Wallace Huo. I’m next door from you guys.”

“Are you really?” The girl asked, surprised and shy all of a sudden. “Can I have your signature, Mr. Huo?” She whips out a small notepad from somewhere – ever so conveniently.

“Uh….okay,” Wallace said, as surprised as she. “What for?”

“You’re my hero!”

“Really? I didn’t know I have such an influence.” Wallace signs the little pad anyway before handing it back to the girl. “I hope you’re not writing down on here that I owed you a fortune or something.” Wallace lets out a chuckle.

“You’re so funny, Mr. Huo,” The girl said, still having her shy smile on. “I don’t want to take up your time, Mr. Huo.”

“Umm…okay then. I’ll see you around since we’re neighbors.”

The girl smiles at him with the warmest smile ever. Wallace gives her a friendly smile back and marches towards the elevators.

Wallace gets into the elevator, thinking of what to say when he sees Cyndi. “Should I just ask her out for coffee? Or should I just get straight to the point? Yea right. It would go just fine like this: Cyndi, you don’t happen to have a boyfriend do you? Good! Because I want to be that person.” He slaps his forehead at that time. “I should find a book called ‘Dating for Dummies’. Gosh! Why didn’t I watch more soap operas?” Wallace pulls himself together and exits the elevator, trying to breathe in and out to calm himself down. Before he could ask someone for Cyndi’s office, he sees her at a desk near the elevator. Well, her back to be exact. She’s talking to a guy right at that moment. “Great! She does have a boyfriend. I might as well turn back while I still have a way out.”

Wallace is about to turn back when he hears someone calling his name. Not really his name, more like “Mr. Huo.” He snaps his attention back to reality. He smiles when he notices it’s Cyndi calling him.

She walks towards him. “Mr. Huo, what are you doing here?”

“Uh…I was just wondering….umm….”

“Cyndi!” A voice boomed over them both. “Come in here!”

Wallace looks past Cyndi to see a guy – the guy that was talking to her before – standing in front of an office nearby. He must have returned to his office when Wallace was deep in thoughts. Cyndi turns around and walks towards the guy’s office, leaving Wallace there not knowing what to do besides from standing there and starring at the closed door. He stands at the exact spot for ten minutes before Cyndi comes out with some files in her hands. She grabs her handbag. Wallace steps forward to help her with the files. They leave together.

In the elevator, Wallace fidgets a little before clearing his throat. “So, what are you doing after work?”

“I’m not sure yet. Probably go visit my friend since I haven’t seen her in 2 years now. I just moved back here from England.”

Wallace smiles. “It doesn’t look like you’d been there though.”

“I don’t look sophisticated like other girls?”

“No. Maybe not corrupted by outer cultural aspects?”

Cyndi smiles. “You have a funny way of putting that.”

Wallace shrugs. “Do I? I mean am I that weird?”

“No. I’d seen others.”

Wallace smiles at his silly question. It’s suicidal to ask that.

They continue the elevator ride in silence. Both looking at the door.

They walk out of the elevator with Wallace deep in thoughts, not knowing that the girl he talked to before had waved furiously to him.

“You know her?” Cyndi asked, turning slightly to Wallace.

Wallace snaps back to attention. “Who?”

“The front desk clerk that was waving at you as we walked by.”

Wallace holds the door for Cyndi to walk out first. “I don’t know her. I meant I only talked to her when I was asking where you’re at.”

Cyndi turns to look at him with a strange expression. “Why are you looking for me?”

“Trying to make up to you for knocking you down earlier.”

“It was nothing. Accidents happen all the time, Mr. Huo.”

They’re walking on the pavement outside the building now.

“So, when are you free?” Wallace asked casually – at least he hopes he sounds casual.

“I have to go to my friend’s this afternoon. I’m still trying to settle in my apartment. Plus the work that Seth just pinned on me. Maybe I’m free this weekend.”

Wallace smiles. “Seth’s the guy that was talking to you earlier?”

“Yes.”

“I’m free this weekend too. Want to go some place? I bet you haven’t had a tour around since you came back. A lot of places had changed.”

“That’ll be nice. I’ll see you this weekend, then?”

“I’ll call you to confirm later. Can I have your….”

Before he could finish, Cyndi had fished out a pen from her skirt pocket, writing her number down onto a piece of paper in her folder. She hands it to Wallace. Wallace reaches over to take it, brushing her hands in the process. His heart jumps like mad. He looks away as he grabs the paper out of her hand.

“All right then,” Wallace said, pretending to be studying the piece of paper in his hand.

“Mr. Huo, if you don’t mind, I have to go home and put these files away and then head over to my friend’s,” Cyndi said.

Wallace puts the piece of paper Cyndi just gave him in his pants pocket. “Actually I’m the one that’s keeping you. I’m supposed to go pick up my sister too.” He smiles before saying, “And call me Wallace.”

“Bye, Wallace.”

She walks off to her car while Wallace stands there staring at her.

She doesn’t have a boyfriend, Wallace thought. I’m sure. If she has one, she should already reject me. She’s giving me a chance. She wouldn’t lie to me. Even though I just met her this morning, but I know she’s not the cunning or deceiving type. I haven’t felt such strong feelings for a girl in a long time. I think I found the angel of my heart.
