Chapter 17

Night Work

Ray watches Mr. Cho disappears towards the elevators before turning back in and closing the door. He walks back to the couch and sits down next to Jessica. Actually, only half sitting since he’s in a laid back position – half on the couch and half off.

“You okay?” Jessica asked, worried because of his sudden change in moods.

“Yea,” Ray mumbled. “Just tired.”

Jessica smiles. “You worked hard to make this happen.”

“Everyone here helped too.”

“Why the sudden modesty?” Mandy asked.

Ray glances at Mandy. “You’re not so bad tonight yourself, except for that kick you gave me.”

Mandy shrugs and takes a sip of iced tea.

Ray sits straight up again. “Okay, gang! Let’s clean up now!”

Charmaine and Jessica get up, gathering plates together. The others still remain sitting.

Mandy goes into a slightly sitting position like Ray before. “I’d done enough already. You guys can clean up.”

“You sound like Ray,” Wallace commented. “Are you sure you’re not brother and sister? Like lost siblings?”

Mandy sits straight up again since she realized she has similar habits to Ray. She stands up and helps Charmaine and Jessica with clearing the table.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” Cyndi asked.

“Ummm…maybe you could help wash the dishes?” Charmaine suggested, knowing Cyndi feels unease just sitting there.

Cyndi smiles, glad to be assigned a task. “Okay.” She stands up and walks to the kitchen.

“I’ll help,” Wallace said, jumping up from his seat. He follows Cyndi to the kitchen, not waiting for her respond.

“What about me?” Annie asked.

“Just sit here and keep Ray in line,” Mandy said, smiling.

Ray gives her an evil look.

Then they overhear Wallace telling Cyndi something as they’re standing at the sink.

“I’ll wash it,” Wallace said. “Then you can dry it and put it back on the racks. You don’t want to get grease all over your hand like that.”

“It’s okay,” Cyndi said. “I’m used to it.”

Wallace smiles. “No, I insist!”

The others look at Wallace and Cyndi and then at one another.

“I don’t think they had enough dessert yet!” Ray said in a low voice so only the group in the living room can hear him. He brings his tongue out in a sick-like motion and shivers, wrinkling his face.

“I think my brother found his angel,” Alice said, maintaining the same low tone as Ray.

Ray leans forward in his seat. “Angel?”

Alice leans forward also, clearing her throat. The others stops what they’re doing and leans in to listen.

“When Wallace and I were little, we used to play in this field and stayed until really dark to see the stars come out,” Alice explained. “In our teen years, it became our favorite spot to hide out whenever we couldn’t solve a problem. He told me one day about his dream of finding his angel. He said that if he ever finds a girl good enough to be his wife, it’s his angel. ‘Cause he said nice girls are rare.”

Ray goes into this laid back position again. The others either resume their clean up task or sit back into their normal position. Charmaine and Jessica bring the dessert plates into the kitchen for Wallace to wash while Mandy sits down again. Mandy couldn’t help but goes into the laid back position again. It’s one of her long time habits. Kevin looks down at her, smiling. She smiles back at him. Annie catches that and continues to observe them for more information. Ray’s looking up at the ceiling, looking like there’s something quite important up there that he needs to acknowledge. He sits straight up again when Charmaine and Jessica come back.

“We need to get to work, Kev,” Ray blurted out.

Kevin snaps his attention to Ray. “Yes and it’s getting quite late now.”

“We’ll just divide the work up,” Jessica said. “It’ll be faster.”

Ray looks at Jessica. “Don’t you have a project to type up?”

Jessica smiles. “It’s not due until Friday.”

Ray stands up. “Okay, let’s get to work then.”

Kevin gets up also, grabbing the folder he laid on one of the shelves before, and follows Ray and Jessica into Ray’s room to finalize Mr. Cho’s plan.

The four girls chat among themselves while Wallace and Cyndi are still washing and drying dishes. Charmaine has to move to Kevin’s spot so she could rest her back while Alice and Annie take Ray and Jessica’s place, respectively.

Another 15 minutes pass by. Wallace and Cyndi are done with the dishes now and are making their way back to the living room.

“I better go, you guys,” Wallace informed the girls. “I have a little work to catch up on.”

Alice stands up upon hearing her brother’s announcement. “Goodnight, you guys! I’m going to rest too.”

“It was nice meeting you all,” Cyndi said with a polite smile.

“You’re leaving?” Annie asked, standing up also.

“Yes, I don’t live here, remember?”

“All right then. I’ll walk you down.”

“Okay.”

“No wait,” Wallace interfered. “Let me take you home. It’s not safe at this hour to drive alone.”

Cyndi looks at Wallace. “I thought you said you have to catch up on work.”

Wallace smiles. “I wouldn’t mind going out for a little fresh air to clear my head.”

“Okay then. If you say so.”

“Goodbye then,” Annie said, smiling.

Wallace opens the door for Cyndi. Then he stops at his apartment to get his keys before walking with Cyndi to the elevators.

The four remaining girls look at one another before Alice and Annie say their goodbyes and goodnights, leaving also.

Charmaine and Mandy leave Kevin, Ray, and Jessica a note before they let themselves out. Mandy turns off the living room light and walks out to the hallway. Charmaine locks the door from the inside before pulling the door shut. They return to their apartment and get ready for bed.
