Cyndi turns around to look at Wallace. “Are you coming? Because I wouldn’t know which one is your car, Mr. Huo.”
Wallace walks up to where she’s standing. “Wallace, not Mr. Huo. How many times do I have to remind you?”
They begin to walk side-by-side to Wallace’s car.
“I was just teasing you,” Cyndi said, smiling sweetly at him.
Wallace smiles at her light-hearted nature. He opens the passenger side door for Cyndi to get in before he circles around to the other side, getting in also. He pulls out into the streets before they talk again.
Cyndi presses the button on her side to let the window down. “I just love the feel of night air.”
“Really?” Wallace asked, doing the same with his right hand. “Me too.” He smiles at their similarity. “Alice and I used to hide in this field when we were little. We waited until the night comes and lay on the grasses, looking at the stars.”
“That’s nice. I wish I know a field like that. It would be wonderful to just lie under a sky full of stars.”
Especially with you, Wallace thought, smiling without knowing it.
Cyndi looks over at Wallace. “What are you smiling about?”
“I’m just trying to imagine what it would be like to do that now.”
Cyndi smiles and turns to her side of the car, looking outside the window, and feeling the night air.
They enjoy the night air in that way in silence for half of the way, except when Cyndi has to tell him where to turn.
As the wind’s blowing in his face, Wallace feels that he’s free like a kite yet there’s still a string attached to pull him back to earth. A string that he used to hate when he thinks of himself as a kite. However, at that moment, he feels happy to know that string is Cyndi. Unknowingly, he reaches over with his left hand to grab hold on Cyndi’s right hand.
Cyndi, surprised at his action, turns from the window and looks down at Wallace’s hand on hers.
Wallace snaps back to reality, withdrawing his hand. He steals a quick glance at her before apologizing for his actions. “I’m sorry. I was just thinking about something.”
Cyndi smiles. “It’s okay.”
The drive the rest of the way remains quiet.
Cyndi gets out of the car when Wallace parks right in front of her apartment complex.
“Thanks for the ride,” Cyndi said, walking to his side.
He smiles up to her. “Anytime.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow at work maybe?”
Wallace smiles and waves as she starts to walk towards her apartment. He watches as she disappears inside her door before driving out of the parking lot and into the streets.
