Wallace turns around every other minute to look and see if the two masked people are gaining on them. When he turns around for the fifth time, Cyndi calls out his name again. He turns his attention back in time to see two more masked people coming at them. He slows down and scans his surroundings before yanking Cyndi to the left toward a lake nearby.
Voice behind them: This is a dead end! You two should give up. We won’t hurt you. Just give us your money.
Wallace: And you’ll let us go afterwards, right?
Although Wallace’s responding to them but his pace is still fast. He turns to look at Cyndi to see how she’s doing. He’s surprised that she’s this strong. Even though her face is turning red but her pace is still up to his.
Wallace: Did you run track in school or something?
Cyndi: You still joke in a time like this?
Her voice isn’t as steady as Wallace's but she’s still able to maintain her pace while talking to him.
Wallace: Hey, you got to be optimistic, right?
He flashes her a quick smile before turning around to see the four masked people running after them.
Wallace: Are they going slow on purpose or we’re just too good for them?
Cyndi looks around before answering him.
Cyndi: I don’t know but are we really at a dead end like they said?
Wallace: How should I know? I've never been here before. Or at least I don’t think so.
Cyndi: Wallace, turn left.
Wallace: And go around in circles as before?
Cyndi: No. Just distract them until 10 more minutes.
Wallace: They might get dizzy and give up?
Cyndi: Ryan’s going to call the cops for us, silly.
Wallace: Oh, right.
Cyndi couldn’t help, but smile at Wallace. She feels so good having him here although they’re in danger now. He seems to give her so much security and courage.
Wallace *breaking Cyndi out of her thoughts*: But if Ryan calls in 10 minutes, it’ll take the cops more time to get here.
Cyndi: If Ryan’s your true friend, he would call the cops already.
Wallace: Want to bet on what time he comes?
Cyndi: No. I’m running out of breath.
Wallace: Want me to give you some?
Cyndi: Wallace!
Wallace: Sorry, hon. I’m trying to keep my nerves calm for the next move.
Cyndi’s face turns another shade of red. She couldn’t help it but she just realized that Wallace just called her “hon”. It probably doesn’t mean anything hence the situation they’re in, but she feels a slight shyness rushing upon her.
Wallace: Ok, we’re back at where we started at the beginning. Aim for that tree, ok? If we reach it, we can hide there for a while to catch our breath. Then we can run to the car. We’ll be saved by then.
Cyndi: Ok. But do you think they cut our wheels by now too?
Wallace: It’s our last hope. Besides, if you’re right, which I hope you are - Ryan should be here by then with the cops.
Cyndi: I….don’t want to talk….anymore. Let’s just…run.
Wallace: Alright. Hang in there, Cyn.
Cyndi half-wish inside that he calls her “hon” again. But she doesn’t want to say it. She focuses all her energy on running.
Wallace *seeing Cyndi‘s sadden expression*: What’s wrong? I know you want to save energy, but you look a tad sad from before.
Cyndi: Nothing.
She feels even more embarrassed because her feelings are showing on her face.
Wallace: Alright. Let’s get out of here then.
Wallace looks back at the other four again.
Wallace: Looks like those four aren’t really track runners. I think if we still have energy, we could run full way since we’re pretty near the car. After I lock the doors, we can sit and rest a little before pulling out.
Cyndi: Ok.
They increase their speed, not talking anymore until they reach the car. Wallace makes sure Cyndi gets in safely before he locks the car. The four masked people are still far behind for some reason. Possibly they didn’t want to waste their energy anymore since they’re not totally exposed anyways. Either way, Wallace doesn’t want to stop and ponder about it.
