Chapter 24

Help Arrived

As soon as his breath returns to normal, Wallace starts the car and pulls out.

“I wonder how far the cops are,” Cyndi said.

“I’m not sure but I’m not sticking around to find out. At least we should put some distance from them before we stop and wait for the cops.”

Before Wallace could say further, they hear some sirens coming from the dirt-road area. Wallace and Cyndi turn their head to look in that direction while Wallace stops the car. Soon, two cop cars pull up to the parking area. Wallace looks back behind them.

“Those four are in big trouble,” He said.

“Ryan’s in the first car,” Cyndi said.

“You’re right, Cyn.” He grabs her right hand with his left, squeezing it. “Ryan’s here and it’s twenty minutes later from the time I got off the phone with him.”

Cyndi smiles at him before looking back at the road to see the cops stopping a foot from their car. She doesn’t bother to withdraw her hand like last time. She actually likes the way he holds her hand. It brings upon her a sense of comfort.

Wallace unlocks his car and is about to get out when he sees one of the cops signals to him to stay put.

“Look,” Cyndi said.

Two of the four masked people had run back into the fields. Two of the cops from the first car chase after them while two more from the other car handcuff the two that look like they’re froze there.

“That’s weird,” Wallace muttered. “How come the other two just stay put?”

“I’m not them,” Cyndi said. “I wouldn’t know.”

Wallace looks at her and smiles. “You really learn the art of joking now, huh? Since you’re around me.”

Cyndi looks at him also. “No. You got that from me. I learn the art of arrogance from you.” She turns on her teasing smile.

Wallace shrugs. “All right. Fair enough!”

They both burst out laughing.

Suddenly they hear a “knock knock” sound coming from the outside.

Wallace looks up to the side in time to see Ryan. He rolls down his window with his right hand. “Safe to get out now?”

“Pretty much,” Ryan said. “But I guess you two lovebirds have no clue.”

Cyndi turns a slight pink and finally withdraws her hand from Wallace’s. Wallace looks back at her before stepping out of the car after Ryan has stepped away from the car.

“Those two officers over there want to talk to you,” Ryan informed Wallace.

Wallace’s eyes follow Ryan’s pointing hand towards the car closest to them. By this time, Cyndi has joined them in front of the car. The three of them walk towards the other car.

“So, are you two hurt?” One of the officers asked. “Do you need to go to the hospital to get checked out before you could come into the station to give us statements?”

“We’re fine,” Wallace said. “Lucky we’re not hurt.”

The officer nods.

Wallace looks around before going on. “I wonder if my two friends were captured by these same people.”

“Give us the descriptions of your friends,” The second officer said. “Justin and Lenny are still trying to search for clues in the fields.”

Wallace briefly gives the two officers descriptions of Vincent and Alyssa.

“I think these people had been hiding around these areas and you guys just happen to be the unlucky ones,” The second officer noted. Before he could go on further, his phone rings. “Excuse me, I have to take care of this.” He steps aside to take the call and leaves them with the first officer to answer their questions. Five minutes later, he comes back. “Lieutenant Ma is coming over here in a few minutes.”

“You don’t think it’s involved with the robberies he’s been investigating all these months?” The first officer asked.

“It’s possible.”

“It’s kind of ridiculous that they get careless now though.”

“Anything is possible though.”

“Excuse me, but are you talking about the Black Mask robbery?” Ryan asked.

“Yes,” The second officer replied. “Um…we forgot to inform you but Lieutenant Ma has been following this and he wants to look at this before we take you all back to the station to get statements.”

“Of course we have to find your friends first,” The first officer informed them.

“Okay,” Wallace said, feeling slightly better.

“We apologize that this is taking so long. But we really want to be thorough with this.”

“It’s okay. We can wait. We really want to find out what happened with Vincent and Alyssa.”

“Man, I’m thirsty,” Ryan said randomly.

“Oh yea. There are some water bottles left in Vincent’s truck.” Wallace walks to Vincent’s truck and opens the trunk. He reaches in through the cooler and pulls out five un-opened bottles. He walks back to the group standing in front of the cop cars and hands each of them one.

The officers thank Wallace and each opens one to drink.

“I wonder if Vincent and Alyssa are okay,” Ryan pondered after taking a sip of water.

“Let’s hope so,” Wallace said.

“What if they’re not captured by these people?”

Wallace looks at him. “What do you mean?”

Ryan takes another drink from the bottle before answering. “What if it’s Jocelyn and her gang?”

“They’re crazy, but not this crazy.”

“How would you know?”

“What are you two talking about?” The first officer interrupted them. “Some gang-related violence we should know about?”

“Uh, no officer,” Wallace said quickly. “We’re just talking about some old classmates.”

“Dangerous ones,” Ryan added.

“If this is some game you’re pulling, please stop,” The second officer warned them. “We’re trying to help here. Don’t mess with our brains.”

“Um, sorry sir. We’re just making assumptions.”

Wallace and Ryan take turns to tell both officers about their gathering events before and what happened. After they’re done, another car arrives at the site. This one isn’t a marked police cars like the other two. When the car stops, a guy around mid-twenties steps out of the car a minute later and approaches them. This guy is skinny but walks with great energy. There’s an air among him that makes him appear as confidence and collected. His clean cut short hair gives his face a younger look than his age. He’s not wearing an officer suit like the other four but is wearing a blue shirt with black jacket over it along with black jeans. Black shoes complete his image, distinguishing himself among all the guys present.

The two officers walk forward to greet the guy. They talk in low voices before approaching Wallace, Cyndi, and Ryan.

“Man, this guy makes me look bad in suits,” Ryan commented before the other three reach them.

“You’re jealous of a cop?” Wallace asked, looking at Ryan.

“He’s not a normal cop.”

Wallace doesn’t say anything else since the guy is coming quite close to them now.

“Hi all,” The guy greeted them with a friendly smile on his face. “I’m Kenneth Ma. I’m sure Brad and George has already told you about my investigation so I hope that you’ll bear with me in the next 15 minutes.”

After a round of handshakes, Kenneth goes into further details about his investigations the past five months, stating that this could be his break at last. Another 10 more minutes pass before the other two officers who had been searching in the fields come back to them. The two had sweats pouring down their face but didn’t take time to wipe it off. They report everything back to Kenneth before standing aside.

“Sounds like this is a copycat job,” Kenneth concluded. “But I’ll look into it anyway.”

“Lieutenant, do you want to call Joey here to help you?” The third officer asked. “Since she just finished the jewelry theft case last week.”

“Okay,” Kenneth said. “Call her, but tell her to wait for us at the station. We should get out of here before someone suffers from a heatstroke.”

“I’m not leaving until we find Vincent and Alyssa,” Wallace declared.

“I don’t think they’re here anymore. At least not from the look of the scene that Justin and Lenny just told me. But we can do a more thorough search now since there are more than enough of us here to do the work.” He turns to Justin and Lenny. “You two stay here since you’d been working hard.”

“Yes, sir!” Justin and Lenny said in unison.
