Chapter 51

Delayed

On the drive back, Gallen calls Jacky to tell him he’s coming back with Alice. Jacky informs him that he’s meeting up with Joey soon and asks if Gallen wants to come. Gallen doesn’t want Alice to know the details so he just uses a different method to communicate with Jacky regarding the matter.

Gallen drops Alice off in front of the apartment building, where Jacky’s standing with Jan. Jacky gets in the car when Alice gets out from the passenger side.

Jacky turns around towards the girls as he buckles up. “Call me when you’re in the apartment.”

Jan nods. Jacky watches them disappear into the lobby before he signals for Gallen to drive off.

“Where to?” Gallen asked.

“Yin Yang restaurant,” Jacky said.

“Danger zone. The guys might be there since I know it’s Kevin and Ray’s favorite place.”

“Let’s take the chance, okay? Besides, you’re supposed to be a crime news reporter so it’s not unusual you meet up with Jo too.”

Gallen shrugs and continues to drive towards the location.

Couple of minutes later, Alice calls Jacky on his cell phone. Alice mentions something about Charmaine calling in on them to check so she didn’t call the guys right away. Then she hangs up. The guys are back in silence for the ride.

When they’re there, Jacky gets out first to find Joey while Gallen parks the car. Gallen finds Jacky five minutes later at a table way to the other side of the area, which for some reason is packed this afternoon.

“She’s not here yet?” Gallen asked.

“No,” Jacky replied, shaking his head. “I just ordered the special drink, did you want some?”

Gallen sits down at a chair across from Jacky. “We’re not here to drink stuffs.”

“Come on, man. We’re not here to torture ourselves by looking at all these people enjoy their food either.”

Gallen ignores Jacky and looks towards the parking lot to see if Joey’s coming yet. He ponders to himself why Jacky could be so bright when he’s analyzing problems and being able to lead everyone through the situation at times, yet now he’s acting so childish. Maybe that’s just his nature to relief stress?

They wait for five more minutes but still no Joey. Jacky’s sipping on his drink now. He had ordered one for Gallen too but was just making Gallen mad by acting inconsiderate.

Jacky looks at his watch. “Man, she is a girl. So late.”

“It’s only five minutes,” Gallen said.

“Fifteen. She said she should be waiting for us when we get here.”

“Look at the crowd. Maybe she’s here already but need to find a parking space?”

Before Jacky could respond, his phone rings.

“Where are you?” Jacky demanded into the phone. “Okay. Got it. We’ll be there in like..” He pauses to check his watch. “…as soon as we can get out of this crowded place.” He hangs up and turns to Gallen. “She’s meeting us at North Star Café.”

“Let’s go then,” Gallen said.

“Let me finish this first.”

“Know what’s important.”

“You’re not paying for it. Of course you can say that.”

“I mean it, man. Let’s go.”

Jacky smiles before whispering to Gallen, “See those two next table over? I’m trying to spy on them so play along.”

Gallen looks to the other side but Jacky stops him.

“Don’t look,” Jacky said, still whispering. “You broke the rule of spying.”

“I’m still saying that we should go meet Joey first.”

“Okay, you go first. I’ll haul a Taxi there.”

“Unless you tell me what’s with those two.”

“Pick up your glass, pretend to be drinking and looking towards the bay.”

Gallen does as said although he would have done it if Jacky isn’t being such a smarty-pants. Then he knows too what Jacky meant earlier. “Okay, I’ll go first. Just be careful.”

Jacky smiles and Gallen leaves.

What was so important that Jacky couldn’t wait?
