“Where have you been?” Joey demanded.
“Traffic.”
“What? That was about…” She pauses and checks her watch for accuracy. “…45 minutes ago.”
Jacky smiles again. “Happens. Should we find a seat?”
Joey hesitates but goes back to her original spot in the back anyway. A waiter is cleaning up at the table but stops when she comes back. They both order a drink and sits down opposite from each other.
“What happened? Where is Gallen?” Joey rattled out – more than ready to tear Jacky up if he doesn’t give her a reasonable explanation.
“Side-tracked,” Jacky replied naturally. “I told him to go back to the apartment building since I just found something else that’s quite important regarding my other case – since he has the car and knows a few shortcuts. I have to haul a Taxi to get here.”
“You mean with the murder at Constant Comfort?”
“Yea.”
“You should have told me. I’m in charge of that case as of this week.”
“You want to go now? It’s too late. Gallen should call me back to confirm about the current situation. But he didn’t yet. Maybe it’s just false alarm.”
The waiter comes back with their drinks.
Jacky takes a sip out of the drink before continuing. “Maybe I should…” His phone rings at that moment so he picks up. “Hello? Yea. I’m here. What took me so long? What took you so long to call? Okay. We’ll come back.” Jacky hangs up and turns to Joey.
“We’re not having this meeting, are we?” Joey asked, knowing too well from Jacky’s exchanged words.
“I’m here, you’re here. We got a meeting going at least for…” He looks at watch. “…5 minutes. We can talk more later. We have to head back. You got your car, right?”
“Yes.”
Jacky takes a last sip of his drink. “I swear I can’t fulfill my thirst today.”
Joey is already on her feet and is walking towards the entrance. Jacky walks after her and pays at the front desk.
While they’re walking to the parking lot, Joey notices someone’s following them. She takes out her compact and pretends to be applying make up since she had decreased her speed. Jacky slows down with her and looks side-way where she has the compact. They could both see a shadow behind them. Joey puts away her compact quickly and advances towards her car.
“What’s your hurry?” Jacky asked, pretending he didn’t see what just happened.
Joey doesn’t answer him, but just gets into her car. He runs to the passenger side and gets in. Joey locks all doors and rolls up the window before backing out. When they’re on the road again, she looks at Jacky, indicating that he can talk now.
“Old boyfriend?” Jacky guessed.
“No,” Joey answered, not showing annoyance.
“I thought I saw some fear in your eyes before.”
“Tell me what was going on with Gallen’s side.”
Jacky starts from the beginning.
