“Jack!” Joey called out, realizing he’s awake. “You’re okay.”
Jacky turns to his left to see Joey sitting next to him. “It seems I’m not dead yet, Miss Meng.”
“Jack, don’t say that.”
“Come on.” He tries to stand up at that time. “Oww…”
Joey stands up and helps him up also.
“So, Miss Meng, where are we at? Those creeps didn’t do anything to you, did they?” He looks at her with concerned eyes.
Joey looks down at the ground. “No.”
“Why are you looking down then? We still have hope. It’s not like I’m going down after one hit. Owww….” Jacky’s pacing around the cell at that time, mumbling, “Why did those creeps have to hit so hard? I was already in the net.”
“Jack, stop moving around. Your back’s going to hurt more.”
“I’m moving with my feet, not my back.”
“Jack, please. Calm down.” Jacky, realizes that Joey’s voice so low and full of worries, stops in the middle of his pacing. He walks back to where Joey is. “What’s wrong?”
Joey looks up to him.
“I mean besides from us being in this cage.”
“I’m sorry,” Joey uttered out softly and slowly.
“What for?” Jacky asked, his voice calm again.
“It was all my fault that we got captured.”
“Come on! Don’t say that. Who knew it was rats at the last trap?”
She looks at him. “You knew, didn’t you?”
“No. Of course not.” He starts to pace again.
Joey steps in front of his path to stop him. “You have to know. If not, why did you object to my going to this path in the first place when we split? I mean, I should have known better than to argue with you since you would never be so childish in times like this.”
Jacky finally looks at Joey. “Yes. I knew. Apparently, those two crooks I met before told me about the rats. It was an accident that one of the guys spilled it out since they’re saying like what if girls go in there and how it’ll be fun seeing how the girls would react.”
“That was why although you don’t want to go to the right, you still go with me?”
“Yes. I know you wouldn’t give up even if I said no. The others are telling us to stop also. I know it’s useless to argue with you and what if I say there are rats here? You would have said….”
Joey cuts him off. “I would have said you’re making it up because you’re just trying to scare me with it.”
Jacky smiles. “Yes.”
Joey sighs and looks down again.
“Don’t worry. We’re not going to die.”
Joey looks up at him.
“I’m serious. I bet the others already found Vincent and Alyssa. They’ll double back and save us. Or we could bust out now.”
“You mean the two who got kidnapped by that Zack or whoever Freddie and the other guy were talking about are Vincent and Alyssa?”
“Who else?”
Joey scans around the area outside them, wondering how they could get out of there.
“Where did they go?”
Joey points towards the left side pathway.
“Great! I can call for backup now.” Jacky takes out his cell phone and starts to dial.
Joey walks back to him. “What?!? You still have yours? They took mine.”
“It’s a backup one.”
Joey looks closer and sees that it’s different from his other one.
“Even the bears have 3 caves, of course I have a backup cell phone. It’s call professionalism.” He flashes out his charming smile at that time.
“Why didn’t you say so before when you woke up?”
“Can’t take chances.”
At that moment, he signals for Joey to quiet down since he seemed to finally get through.
“Listen, 'Tim',” Jacky said. “Where in the world are you guys?”
“Stop calling me Tim with the emphasis. You’re creeping me out.” He remembers the situation. “By the way, where are you? We’re already out. Good news. We found Vincent and Alyssa. Saved them already.”
“What?!? And you didn’t call me up? When was this?”
“I called you an hour ago but you didn’t pick up.”
“Damn creeps probably already smashed my cell phone to pieces,” Jacky mumbled.
“What?” Gallen asked, confused.
“Apparently, Miss Meng and I are trapped somewhere in here and those creeps are no where near here so I’m calling you up for help.”
“You must be kidding. We already caught all of them.”
“What?!? That’s impossible. You said one hour ago that you found Vincent and Alyssa, meaning you captured those crooks. You should have found us. Don’t tell me those creeps leave me here to die.”
“Do you know at all where you are? I’m coming in.”
“Miss Meng, where in the world are we?” Jacky asked, turning to Joey.
“I’m not sure either since it was so dark when they brought us here,” Joey said.
“Hold on, I see something useful. I’ll call you back when I can’t get out on my own.” Before Gallen could object, Jacky shuts the phone off. He then walks towards Joey.
“What are you trying to do?” Joey asked, alarmed.
What’s happening is he’s walking towards her a little too close and reaches out his hand towards her. Jacky doesn’t respond but reaches further towards her face. She looks scared for the first time and edges away. Jacky snatches something from her hair quickly and steps a safe distance back again. Joey finally sees what he’s doing. She didn’t even realize that she’s wearing a hairclip today.
Jacky begins to take it apart and starts to create a lock opener. “Sorry, Miss Meng. I’ll buy another one for you later when we get out.”
“I didn’t realize I have it on today,” Joey admitted.
“Those creeps are so dumb they leave it on you.”
“They probably didn’t see it.”
“You’re right. It blends so well with your hair.”
Joey watches Jacky work on the hairclip some more and then he smiles.
“Watch the magic!” Jacky announced proudly. He steps up towards where the lock is and starts to work on it. About a minute later, he smiles as he hears a click. He turns to Joey. “This is easier than I thought.” He opens the door and lets Joey get out before him. Then he reaches into his pants pocket and pulls out a penlight.
“What else do you bring for backup?” Joey asked, curious.
Jacky begins walking towards the right path. “I don’t remember anymore but when I need something, you’ll see.”
Joey is even more impressed with how Jacky could hide all of those without getting them confiscated with the first set.
They walk into the tunnel, trying to find their way out. This time around, Joey listens to Jacky’s direction without any objections. She knows that she has to cooperate with him since it was her fault they got captured. Although Jacky doesn’t blame her but she knows better.
About ten minutes, they seem to be deeper into the cave but there isn’t a way out. However, Jacky starts to pound on the wall.
“I think I found the place that those two talked about earlier,” Jacky said.
Joey waits for Jacky to go on.
“They said there’s a trap door in the back of the cave that leads out in the wood in case we have to escape later.” He goes back to tapping the rocky area again after explaining it to Joey.
Joey does the same to the other side. Minutes later, Joey finds it by luck since she’s getting impatience with it and starts to hit one of the rocks. It actually pops back in. Joey smiles at her luck. “Jack! I found it!”
Jacky steps to where she is. He pushes the rock in further and there’s a piece of the wall springing out. It’s a door that when it opens, the door is in the middle. Jacky goes in first and then signals for Joey to come in when he’s sure it’s safe.
They walk about 15 minutes through empty space before hearing water sounds. Jacky’s sure this place doesn’t have any traps since he knows that this is the gang’s last resort for retreat so they wouldn’t be dumb enough to set up traps to kill themselves in time of emergency. He stops and shines his lights all around. He stops his scanning when he sees something reflecting back. He brings his light back to left again.
“Jo!” He called out to her.
“Huh?” Joey walks to where he is.
“Look!” He points with his light.
Then Joey sees it too.
They walk towards the target. When they’re in front of it, Jacky stops and turns to Joey.
“Miss Meng, you know how to swim, right?” Jacky asked.
Joey wrinkles her face. “Of course.”
“Okay, I’ll go first. Lights out. Don’t scream, okay?”
Joey nods.
Jacky snaps off the light and puts it back in his pocket. He makes sure his cell phone is buried deep in his pants pocket before jumping in.
All Joey could hear are splashes at the next moment. She jumps in also.
