“Let’s get out of here before we’re smashed,” Jacky said.
Charmaine nods and follows Jacky closely through the crowd. Jacky stops a few times to make sure Charmaine’s still around.
“Is she meeting us here?” Charmaine asked.
“I guess so,” Jacky said casually.
Charmaine glances at Jacky suspiciously. “You guess?”
Jacky lets out a nervous laugh.
“It’s all right. We’ll just call her when we find a spot that we can stop at.”
They continue to make their way out of the station in silence. They would constantly look around in the crowd to detect possible signs of Jan or anyone familiar. However, they couldn’t find anyone even when they’re out in the clear area again. Just as Jacky decides to pull out his cell phone to call Jan, he hears someone calling his name.
“Wait a minute,” Jacky said.
“What?” Charmaine asked.
“I heard someone calling me.”
They stop walking altogether and turn back to the station.
Jacky smiles. “Great.”
Charmaine waves to the girl in the white jacket walking towards them. The girl smiles back at them. They wait silently for her to join them before speaking up.
“Detective Meng,” Charmaine greeted her.
“I’m on vacation,” Joey said. “Call me Joey.”
Jacky looks past Joey. “What happened to your boyfriend?”
“They’re still back there. I saw you two so I want to catch up first.”
Jacky smiles. “If I didn’t know better, I thought you were chasing after me.”
“You wish.”
“If you’re on vacation, does that mean Kenny have to work overtime?”
“Too bad. But I’ll be back in a few days.”
“That’s too bad. How about Kai Tai and…”
“They’re probably heading back to town with me too since Editor Cheung’s on their case. It was all Ricky’s fault.”
Just then, Ricky walks up to them along with Kenneth.
“I could never imagine Detective Meng talking behind my back,” Ricky said, sounding disappointed.
Joey turns around to face Ricky. “It is your fault.”
Jacky looks towards Kenneth for an answer. “What happened?”
“Let’s get out of here before we talk,” Kenneth said.
Jacky looks around them. “Good idea.”
They walk past the station’s entrance and towards the sidewalk ahead before resuming conversation again.
“If we were on the same train as you guys, how come we didn’t see each other before?” Jacky asked.
“It’s a long one,” Joey replied.
“True.”
“I wonder when Huxley’s going to be here,” Kenneth pondered aloud.
Jacky wrinkles his eyebrows. “Huxley?”
“He’s supposed to pick us up today.”
“Oh.”
“Jan didn’t tell you?”
“Actually, I was going to call her. We got delayed over some things and I forgot to call.”
“Unbelievable,” Ricky said.
“What?”
“Oh yeah, what happened to Ray and…” Joey began.
“They decided not to come after all.”
“So much for a reunion?”
“They have to go take care of some matters.”
“Oh.”
“Hopefully they can take care of it,” Charmaine said, looking at her watch to check the time again.
“I don’t think they can succeed that fast…even for Ray,” Jacky said.
“What happened?” Joey asked, concerned.
“It’s a long story.”
“Trying to act secretive again?”
“No, it’s actually personal so I don’t want to say it out.”
Joey nods, understanding what Jacky might be implying. She looks at her own watch also since they’ve been waiting for a while now.
“Maybe we should just go back on our own,” Kenneth suggested. “I mean we know this place.”
“Better not,” Ricky said. “Maybe they’re all at Jan’s. Don’t want Huxley to make a trip for nothing.”
“Should we call her then?” Jacky asked.
“I’ll do it.”
Jacky holds back the urge to strangle Ricky right there and then in front of everyone. He taps his foot on the ground, waiting for Ricky to provide them with some kind of answer. They could only hear several “okay” or “all right” while Ricky’s on the phone with Jan. Even if they’re not as impatient, but they all crowd around Ricky when he finally hangs up.
“Well?” Jacky demanded.
“What did Jan say?” Joey blurted out.
“Is Huxley coming or not?” Kenneth asked.
Only Charmaine is polite enough to refrain herself from attacking Ricky with her own question like the others. However, her face also shows the same anxiousness as the others.
Ricky looks from one to the other. “You all are so impatient.”
“Get to the point,” Kenneth urged.
“Huxley set out late so he’s delayed in traffic.”
“Did you tell Jan we can go back by ourselves?”
“No.”
Kenneth couldn’t help it but hits Ricky on the head.
“Hey!”
“Why should we wait here for him when we can be back there already?”
“There are lots of roadblocks and other things going on so it’s best we stick around here or we’ll be stuck in some traffic too.”
Surprisingly, Joey’s the one putting a hand on Kenneth’s shoulder to calm him down.
“Let’s not panic then,” Jacky said.
Ricky looks at Jacky cautiously. “Speak for yourself, Detective Chu.”
“He’s not a detective anymore,” Joey reminded Ricky.
“I’m used to calling him that.”
“It doesn’t matter really,” Jacky said.
“How about we all find some place to rest for a bit and wait for Huxley?” Charmaine suggested, attempting to break ice.
“Good idea,” Ricky agreed. “I’ll text Jan and tell her we’ll be around in case Huxley can’t find us.”
They find a coffee shop just down the street and order a cup of hot drink each to warm up while waiting. They’ve chosen a table by the window so they could keep an eye for Huxley also.
Jacky takes a sip of his coffee before speaking up. “So…what was that all about Ricky’s fault?”
Joey smiles. “You won’t believe what happened.”
“Hey, how come you’re such a busybody since you dated him?” Ricky snapped.
“Can’t blame her,” Jacky said. “She’s trying to be part of your family now.”
Joey hits Jacky on the shoulder.
“Like I’m wrong.”
“Speak for yourself first,” Ricky said.
“What?”
“Like you don’t want to fit in with our family too.”
“Are you trying to divert this conversation somewhere else?” Joey asked.
“Exactly,” Jacky agreed.
“Let me tell you guys then,” Kenneth volunteered.
“Traitor,” Ricky shot back.
“Everyone will know anyway.”
“What?”
“Your mom will tell everyone about it.”
“If she finds out.”
Kenneth ignores Ricky and turns to the others again. “Anyway, we were covering about the Cornerstone Corporation and then Ricky decided to get creative and…”
Ricky clears his throat. “Like you and Hawke objected.”
“Did you say Cornerstone?” Jacky asked.
Kenneth nods. “Yea, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, go on.”
“We were trying to interview that dude Ekin Cheng and Ricky has to make him mad by bringing up the past and now he doesn’t want to do an interview with us anymore.”
“I was just mentioning his family to score some points around the holidays,” Ricky said defensively. “What’s wrong with that?”
“You had to go on when he look irritated already.”
Jacky points at Ricky. “Bad move.”
“Why?” Ricky asked, turning his attention to Jacky.
“Off record?”
All three – Kenneth, Joey, and Ricky – nod.
“Ekin doesn’t like bringing up the past much, especially if you as much as mention something about how good he’s getting along with his family.”
“What’s the point of saying ‘off record’ for when what you said is as clear as mud?” Ricky asked.
“I’m getting there.”
Ricky’s about to say something else, but Kenneth stops him by putting a hand on his right shoulder.
“You two did your homework on Ekin’s family background?” Jacky asked.
Kenneth and Ricky nod but then they shake their head.
“I guess you didn’t.”
“What does that have to do with anything?” Ricky asked impatiently.
“Kevin…”
“Oh!” Joey blurted out, getting it.
Ricky turns to Joey. “What?”
“Kevin Cheng…”
“And?”
“She put the emphasis on ‘Cheng’,” Kenneth pointed out.
Ricky snaps his fingers. “They’re related?”
Jacky nods. “Brothers.”
“Now we’re getting somewhere. I should definitely do my homework better the next time. Wait until I get a hold of this story.”
“Off record, remember?”
The others smile as Ricky wrinkles his face.
Charmaine looks at her watch again.
Jacky sees it. “Are you getting impatient on Huxley or are you waiting for Ray to call us?”
“A little of both,” Charmaine said.
“I bet you he won’t call us until at least another day.” Then he turns to Ricky again. “Why are you guys doing an article on Cornerstone Corporation though?”
“They’re new,” Ricky replied. “Everyone wants a jab at Kwok Ka Leung. Guess what our next project is?”
“What?”
“Jazmin Jewelry.”
“For real?” Charmaine asked, surprised.
“Yes. I fought for that one.”
“That’s our next case too.”
“I guess I’ll be seeing you and your team around a lot then. How about an interview?”
“That’s up to our boss. We’re still in the process of negotiation so everything’s not for sure yet. We’ll know in two weeks.”
“Good luck then.”
“Thanks.”
Just then, Ricky’s phone rings. The others wait patiently for Ricky to pick it up. “Hello?”
“Are you guys gone yet?” A guy asked.
“No, we’re still hanging around at this one coffee shop waiting for this one guy to pick us up.”
“All right. I’ll see you there.”
“What’s this place called again?” Ricky asked the others.
“Westside Café,” Kenneth replied.
“Hawke, you heard him?”
“Yea,” Hawick said.
“Okay, we’re at one of the window tables.”
“Okay then.”
They hang up after that.
“Hawke’s with you guys on vacation?” Jacky asked.
“Problem?” Ricky asked back.
“Just asking.”
“We invited him since he has no one to go home to,” Kenneth said.
“Oh?”
“Yea, his parents are busy at the moment and when they’re on vacation, he’ll be back to work,” Ricky explained. “Too bad.”
“At least we’re not all lost with the amount of people coming this weekend, right?” Kenneth asked the others.
Joey nods while Ricky looks like he’s deep in thoughts.
Jacky looks at Joey. “What’s wrong with him?”
Kenneth smiles. “He’s probably thinking it would have been better if we invited someone else to come along as well.”
Jacky wrinkles his eyebrows.
Joey smiles along with Kenneth. “Asuka.”
Jacky nods his head. “Oh…”
Charmaine looks from one to the other. “Did I miss something?”
“She works at North Star Café,” Joey said.
Charmaine still looks confused.
“She has won his heart without even doing anything at all.”
“Not really,” Kenneth said. “She just does her job.”
Charmaine finally nods her head since her previous assumption is right.
Ricky pretends not to hear them. Instead, he looks outside to check for Hawick or Huxley again.
“Hey, you guys!” A voice behind them said.
They turn around to see Hawick walking towards them. Charmaine moves her chair towards Ricky’s direction as Jacky slides closer to her to make room for Hawick.
“Love the crowd?” Ricky joked.
“I almost got ran over,” Hawick said.
“Almost.”
“Want anything?” Jacky asked.
“Ah…coffee?” Hawick stuttered out.
Jacky signals a waiter over so Hawick could order a drink for himself before they continue their conversation.
“What have you been talking about?” Hawick asked.
“Just a little catch up and how Ricky goofed,” Jacky said.
“Hey!” Ricky yelled out. “You’re so getting it when I tell Jan.
“I don’t think Jan would listen to you though, considering how long she’s been with Jacky,” Joey reasoned.
“I’m a reporter, I can get creative.”
“She knows you longer and would know how cunning you can get.”
“She got you there,” Kenneth said.
“Oh great,” Ricky snapped. “Now Detective Meng is trying to score major points with her future cousin-in-law.”
“You guys been taking a stab at each other?” Hawick asked.
“Nothing to do anyway, we’ve been waiting here for Huxley to come,” Jacky said.
“There’s still little time, why didn’t you go explore a bit? I saw shops while making my way here.”
“Once you know this place better, you would realize that it’s nothing but a front,” Ricky said.
“Why are you bad-mouthing your area?”
“I’m telling the truth.”
“And exaggerating in the process also,” Kenneth added.
The waiter comes back with Hawick’s coffee at that time. Hawick thanks him as he sets it down and goes back to work. Ricky takes that time to look at his watch again.
“I told you we’re better off hauling a Taxi back ourselves,” Kenneth said.
“We would still be stuck in traffic, wouldn’t we?” Ricky pointed out.
“There isn’t just one way to go home, you know.”
Ricky turns to Jacky. “This is the reason why I’m rooting for you.”
“What are you guys talking about?” Hawick asked, confused.
Ricky turns to Hawick. “Sip your coffee and observe, kid. You’ll soon find out.”
“Kid?” Joey asked.
“He’s inexperience so I have to give him some tips.”
“Sure.”
Jacky points at Ricky. “Now I believe him that’s you’re such a bully.”
“Watch what you’re saying before you become the target,” Ricky warned.
“Like I’m scare of you.”
Charmaine and Joey exchange a smile as they detect the cue of a guy-showdown scene happening soon.
“If you’re not scared of me then…” Ricky threatened.
Kenneth cuts him off. “Forget it, man. Come on.”
Kenneth gets up at that time along with Joey while Ricky still sits there.
“What are you saying?” Ricky asked. “He’s challenging me. I need to teach him a lesson before…”
“Then do it yourself since Huxley’s here.”
Jacky takes a quick look outside as Charmaine and Hawick get up to follow Kenneth and Joey out.
“Are you guys coming?” Joey yelled back to them.
Ricky gets up and points at Jacky. “You’re lucky this time. Next time…”
Jacky gets up also. “We’ll see about it.”
Ricky walks side-by-side with Jacky. “Don’t you dare hide behind Jan’s shadow.”
“Am I that incapable to hide behind her?”
“You never know.”
“Knock it off, you two,” Joey ordered.
“Yes, ma’am,” Jacky said.
Jacky increases his pace to catch up with the others, leaving Ricky behind. Ricky ends up walking and talking to Hawick instead. They meet Huxley at the entrance so Huxley doesn’t have to enter the café at all. Charmaine and Joey step up to the counter to pay for their drink while the others wait outside for them.
“Hey, you guys,” Huxley greeted them. “Lucky I took the van or we won’t be able to fit in it.”
The others walk out towards open space before answering Huxley.
“Or we can haul a Taxi back,” Ricky said. “And you didn’t take the van. Jan told you to.”
Huxley scratches his head. “Ah…I guess you talked to her.”
“Of course. She’s my cousin, am I entitled to?”
“Stop giving him a hard time,” Kenneth interfered. “He’s here now, right? Let’s go.”
Huxley gives Kenneth a gratitude smile as he leads them to the van.
“I’m not giving him a hard time,” Ricky continued. “I’m just stating the facts.”
When they reach the van, Kenneth turns back to the others. “I guess I’m sitting front with Huxley then.”
“I want to sit in front too,” Ricky said.
“But not next to Hux, right?”
“What are implying?”
“So you wouldn’t pick on him.”
“Guys, come on,” Joey interfered.
Kenneth turns and smiles at Joey. “Yes, Madame Meng.”
Joey gives him a look but ends up smiling anyway.
“I guess I’m sitting in the middle then?” Jacky said.
“Of course you are, but not behind him and for the same reason Kai Tai just came up with,” Ricky said.
Jacky gives him a thumbs-up signal for a great counter-strike as he follows Joey inside the middle section of the van. Hawick takes the last section, having the whole space to himself. Once they’re all in, Huxley pulls out and concentrates on driving while the others talk among themselves again. Actually, it is Ricky who speaks the most, telling the rest of them – excluding Kenneth – who haven’t been there different scenery and stories associated to its location.
*****
They are stuck in traffic for the next half an hour as Huxley – yet again – decides to make a smart decision by going back the way he came from. Luckily, Kenneth is the one sitting between Huxley and Ricky or Huxley would already get it big time from Ricky as they sit in traffic and are looking around, trying to find a way to pass time. They finally strike a break at last when Huxley finally listens to Ricky and pulls to a side road.
“Finally!” Ricky exclaimed out.
“Calm down, man,” Kenneth said.
“Tell me next time to travel by my own car here if I have to.”
“It’ll take a very long time…not to mention…” Jacky began in his explanation tone.
“Future cousin-in-law, cork it before you’re the target,” Ricky snapped, turning sideway to look at Jacky. “And why are you defending your rival?”
“What?!” Huxley exclaimed out, shocked. “He’s engaged to Jan?”
Ricky turns back to Huxley. “Focus on your driving and…”
“He wish!” Joey yelled out at about the same time as Ricky.
“Guys!” Kenneth interfered.
“I’m bored, man,” Ricky said. “I have to find something to talk about.”
“Then how about coming up with a way to patch things up with that Ekin Cheng so you can get your job back,” Joey suggested.
“I wasn’t fire, okay? I was just kicked off the assignment…temporarily.”
“Right…”
Jacky laughs out of nowhere, feeling disbelief at Joey’s sense of humor. Could this be Kenneth’s influence?
The rest of the ride is less hectic – mostly due to the fact that they do not run into traffic again.
When Huxley pulls into a dirt road leading away from the exotic side of town, Jacky could see the countryside spreading onward ahead.
“Let us off here,” Ricky said.
“But Jan said…” Huxley began.
“Kenneth and I always go over there anyway. It’s nothing new. Routine stuffs each year. Let us off here.”
Huxley finally pulls to a side of the road and lets them out. Joey and Hawick follow them as well.
“We’ll see you guys later,” Ricky said to the others.
Huxley nods absent-mindedly while Jacky waves at them. Jacky doesn’t know what else to do besides from tapping on the empty spot next to him.
Charmaine smiles. “Bored?”
Jacky nods. “Somewhat.”
“Not for long though. I’m guessing we’re not far from Jan’s place.”
Jacky doesn’t answer but just smiles.
About five more minutes, Huxley pulls into a driveway and parks. He gets out of the van without turning back to them. Jacky turns to Charmaine and signals for her to get out. Huxley turns back to face them when they’re outside again.
“I’ll go in and inform them,” Huxley said. “The back door’s already unlocked so you can just pull your luggage out.”
Jacky nods.
“He seems less friendly than before,” Charmaine commented.
“Maybe he missed his med time.”
Charmaine slaps Jacky’s shoulder. “Stop.”
Jacky’s surprised of Charmaine’s sudden change of behavior towards him. He observes her carefully with his eyes while they’re retrieving their luggage. She catches him staring at her as he shuts the back door.
“What?” Charmaine asked.
“Nothing,” Jacky rattled out automatically.
“Okay then. Let’s go.”
Jacky nods and follows her in silence, still pondering about matters.
When they’re inside, Jacky could see a spacious living room. The kitchen’s connecting to it to the left and a sliding door leading to small room outside – possibly a small garden? They observe the place silently for a full minute before either one speaks up.
“Where did he go?” Charmaine pondered aloud.
“Maybe this isn’t Jan’s place but it’s a trap,” Jacky suggested. “He wants us to enter and then wham!”
Charmaine turns to Jacky. “What?”
“Hidden blade comes slashing from somewhere.”
“Why don’t you switch to writing psycho-thriller novels instead of…”
Before Charmaine could continue, they hear a creaking sound from somewhere. They both freeze in their spot to listen and then turn in every direction, trying to locate the sound. Jacky could hear Charmaine sighing out in relief as Jan steps out from one of the rooms from the back with a smile, greeting them.
“And I thought you’re not scared,” Jacky whispered.
Charmaine doesn’t say anything but hits him on the shoulder again.
“You two are getting along quite well,” Jan teased.
“Not as well as…” Jacky stops because he sees Jessica stepping out from the hallway Jan just came out from as well. “When did you get here?”
Jessica smiles. “I’ve been here for the whole week already.”
Jacky still looks confused. He knows that she’s here doing an assignment. But he’s more surprised that Jan hasn’t told him about it earlier.
“Would you believe? I was out shopping for stuffs when I first came that I bumped into Jan. She invited me here for the time being since she could help me do research and all, not to mention giving me special tours around here. I want to give you guys a surprise so I told Jan not to tell you guys.”
Jacky finally nods.
Jessica, her eyes wandering around briefly, turns to Jacky again. “Where are Ray and…”
“He’s not coming.”
Jessica wrinkles her eyebrows.
“Family matters. We’re definitely spending the weekend here without him. Or if he’s lucky, he’ll be here later. It only happened yesterday and he wanted to take care of it right away. So I guess that’s why he didn’t tell you yet.”
Jessica nods. “It’s all right. I’ll call him later.”
Jacky nods. “Of course.” His eyes begin to wander around also. “What happened to Huxley? I swear he was right in front of us.”
“He went back to the shop to help Mom already,” Jan said.
“Without the van?”
“It’s within walking distance. He could use the exercise. Besides, it’s our family van. His car is parked at the shop.”
“I guess Mom isn’t here?”
Charmaine and Jessica exchange a look.
“Nah,” Jan said. “But you can meet her in a bit. I’ll take you guys to your room. You guys can unpack and settle in and then we can go to the shop if you guys want.”
Jacky nods again. In fact, all Jacky has been doing is nodding. If he doesn’t need to maintain conversation, he already abandoned talking ages ago.
Jessica signals to Charmaine, leading her down the hall to the guest room – leaving time and space for Jacky and Jan to talk. After they’re out of sight, Jacky breaks the stare and gestures around the place.
“Nice place, eh?” Jacky said causally – too casual, not to mention edging over to the side of lame.
Jan shrugs. “It’s not much, but it’s something.” She could see Jacky’s eyes darting curiously around the room. “Want to take a tour?”
“Uh…”
“Just leave your luggage here since no one’s going to steal it anyway.”
“I didn’t mean that.”
Jacky parks his luggage next to a sofa and follows Jan. Their first destination confirmed Jacky’s guess since it is the small garden room that Jacky noticed earlier on his first inspection. He notices how nice the view is as they step through the sliding door.
“You’re sharing a room with Huxley, by the way,” Jan informed him. “But if you don’t like it, you can go stay at Kai Tai’s house.”
“It’s all right,” Jacky muttered.
Jan could hear the disappointment in Jacky’s tone so she distracts him with the little tour instead.
They spend most of the afternoon at Jan’s house and the shop before heading over to Kenneth’s house. They end up back at Jan’s house again when Kenneth and Ricky’s parents decided to come visit Jan’s house for dinner. While the parents chat away with New Year plans, the rest of them go outside to Jan’s little garden and close the door so they could talk among themselves also, sharing their stories these past days – stories that they don’t already know – as well as some of their past childhood memories since Ricky had launched into the whole “once upon a time” storytelling method about this place and how he, Jan, and Kenneth had grew up together.
*****
Jacky couldn’t sleep that night for some reason. He gives up after reinforcing another round of toss-and-turn routine. He tosses the cover aside and climbs out of bed, heading for the door. He opens the door silently as not to wake Huxley. Then he walks back down into the hall towards the kitchen, seeing the tint of the moon seeping into the room at the far right side of it. Feeling like he could use some fresh air, he steps towards the sliding doors. He’s surprised that it’s still ajar at this time of the night but he could see a shadow casting next to the glass table so he looks a little further right to see who it is. He’s even more surprised to see Jan still up. What’s she doing out in the cold like this? Isn’t her usual sleeping routine supposed to return to normal by now? Considering they parted ways more than half a year already. He reaches his hand out to pull the sliding door back, making his way out towards her. Before he could speak up, she turns to face him.
“Nice night view, huh?” Jan asked, her smile as bright as before when he greeted her this morning. But her face is a little paler than before.
“You all right?” Jacky asked.
“Of course, why?”
Jacky shrugs his shoulders – suddenly lost for words. Why are her words suddenly so cold that he could feel the chills creeping up his back? Or was it because he forgot about the weather condition and had forgotten to grab a jacket from his room when he exited? He shrugs again, telling himself not to be so sensitive. He takes another step towards her and sits down at the chair on the left. His smile fades when he sees her edging away from him.
“I thought you invited me here,” He teased. “Isn’t it a bit ironic that you’re acting like I’m some stranger?”
Jan shrugs and leans her head on her folded knees, her hands hugging her knees together. “Maybe it’s been a long time so I’m a bit…”
He doesn’t want to force her to come up with an explanation so he extends his hand out to stop her. “It’s okay. I’m just joking.” He relaxes and leans back into his chair, looking up at the sky above instead.
“You couldn’t sleep either?”
Jan’s sudden concerned tone convinced Jacky of his paranoia from seconds before. He flashes on his smile again. “Maybe ‘cause I miss my girlfriend…and know that she’ll be sitting out here so I decided not to let her down.”
Upon hearing those words, Jan lifts her head up to stare at him. He could see a tint of a smile creeping into her eyes but he dismisses it as a figment of his imagination as she suddenly slides her chair back and stands up. “Have fun waiting. I’m going to sleep.”
He reaches out his hand to grab a hold of her hand as she walks by. “What’s wrong?”
She turns around to look at him again. “What do you mean? I just had enough fresh air so I’m going back in to sleep.”
“I mean your attitude.”
“Huh?”
“I didn’t want to press you for information earlier, but seeing how things are, I can’t just ignore it.”
“There’s nothing wrong. I’m just tired right now.” She finally yanks her hand away from him and walks inside.
Jacky stands up. “Jan!”
She doesn’t answer or turn back, but just continue on her way like before – oblivious to his existence.
For as long as he could remember, Jacky stands there dumb-founded, not knowing what to do or say for the first time in his entire life. However, he doesn’t dwell on it for long. He pulls himself out of the thought and returns to his room, reassuring himself that he will take care of the matter tomorrow.
