Chapter 2

h.a.t.r.e.d

Time was evidently running out. She had exactly five minutes to spare before her cruel stepmother lock the house door and forbid any entries. Suffering from a severely strict curfew, Jolin paced up her rhythm of steps. The streets were stilled with silence of the night as lamp posts acted as the only source of light.

It wasn’t her fault to stay out late. Jolin’s mind ran for a storm of excuses and reasons her stepmother would be likely to disgest. It was all her nasty manger’s fault who held her back at the restaurant even after work time.

‘Don’t go cut cross the park after sunset. Its dangerous.’ The warning rolled around Jolin’s head as she crossed the traffic road. But having no time to spare, she disregarded that warning and entered the park. That route was the only way to get her home fast. Anything was far off better than sleeping at the doorsteps again.

The park, especially at night was a quiet place. The cool wind slapped gently against her cheeks as leaves on trees rustled. The stillness of her surroundings and being encircled with little light launched shivers down her spine. Fear crept up her heart and she walked faster.

Jolin never believed in ghosts lurking around night parks. It was in fact silly to even consider their existence. But the tall towering trees with its dark shadows hovering sent her wild imagination spinning. She accelerated her speed. Walking fast didn’t stop the Earth’s roll but sometimes it felt like it could.

She wasn’t getting far before the mysterious footsteps behind froze her nerves. She could feel eyes on her back. Panicking, she starting running but she wasn‘t fast enough. The next moment, all she could felt was a strong arm being thrown over her shoulders and tightened around her neck. She shrieked in terror but another hand slammed against her mouth, resulting her shout into a muffled scream.

The force dragged her backwards violently. She kicked her legs, struggling to gain freedom from the attacker’s strong grip. Everything proved futile when she was thrown flatly to the ground behind a couple of tall trees. Jolin looked up at the figure standing a few inches in front. Tears stung her eyes as her soul swathed with trepidation.

“What do you want?” she stammered, retreating backwards with her hands as the man advanced towards her with that roguish smirk. He was at his balding age, old enough to be her father.

“Help!” Jolin screamed, attempting to get up on her feet but that man tackled her down, getting on top of her.

“Hush!” he warned, gripping hard onto her neck. “I will make this less painful if you listen.”

“Get away!” she cried, tears rolling down. She kicked her legs hard, pleading with fear. Giving no chance, the man pinned her to the ground and delivered a smack to her face. He shredded off her clothes, ignoring her cries of help. Jolin’s mind was running eccentrically and no matter how hard she struggled to get free, her strength was far too pathetic to out beat the man’s.

Helplessly, she let him devoured her.

“ARGH!” Jolin screamed as that familiar force sucked her down rapidly, making her felt as if she was dropping down from somewhere high. “Get off!” she shouted, breaking off in cold sweat. She blinked her eyes hard, only to realize that she was lying on her bed. Safe and sound. Relief rippled in her anxious heart. The clock on her bedroom wall read 3 in the morning.

Its that nightmare again. She breathed in and out heavily, taking several long moments for her thumping heart to slow. Wiping away her tears, she dashed to the bathroom and splashed water over her cheeks. Two years had passed ever since that fateful night when her chastity was tainted. But still, it never failed to haunt her in her nightmares.

When she finally found the strength to open her eyes again, she found herself face to face with her reflection in the mirror. Droplets of water rolled down from her wet face as she stared blankly at herself. She wasn’t sure if that was still the real her. That incident not only took away her innocence. But it plunged her into a world of darkness and vengeance. She was only 19 when it all happened. Everything was too harsh to accept.

Her past was already marked with bottomless wounds and upsetting memories. From her unhappy childhood to the separation of her parents to living with her step mother, nothing that took place in her life was a blissful one. The worst moment dawned in when her stepmother refused to acknowledge her existence. Jolin despised everything around her, including her biological mother who left for another man and her father, who was too much a coward to stand up for her daughter’s rights.

Leaving home with no money, she roamed the streets and was saved by Franklin’s son when she fainted out of hunger. That day she entered the clan signified her start of viciousness. She was lost in the journey of her despondent life, and the only way she could gain freedom now was to help the Clan. It was a rule that everyone whom the clan saved had to serve them. She wasn’t taught with any basic skills of fighting but still, she was taught how to hold a gun properly and how to kill with it. She was taught how to seduce men. She was just like a tool to the clan. A tool used to get close to men.

Jay Chou.

He was his next victim. And most importantly, her detestation for him was so strong that she had the intense urge to kill him. She hadn’t met him yet her hatred for him had already surfaced. He was the son of that jerk who ruined her. Unquestionably, he must be the same as his father.

At least that was what she thought.

Jolin entered the noisy pub and squeezed her way through the crowd. It was one of the many pubs owed by Jay. But not to her luck, she spotted no one that looked like the photograph of Jay on his profile. Sitting at the bar counter, she took a sip of her vodka, studying the surroundings around her. To get her new assignment started, it was vital for her to get near any subject matter that had relations with Jay. That was why she chose to kick off her mission with the pub.

She was about to lit her cigarette when someone offered a lighter in front of her. Looking up, it was a guy. But not her target. He nodded at her with a gentlemanly smile yet at once, Jolin was still able to see through his evil intentions. From her basic knowledge, guys in pubs who blindly hit on girls were all good-for-nothings.

“Thanks.” she muttered out after lighting the cigarette.

“Do not mention.” He kept his voice deep and smooth, trying all hard to inject charisma in him. “I’m Philip.” he introduced, stretching out his hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“Pleasure.” Jolin said unfeelingly, blowing small circles of puff at his face. She crossed her legs, revealing several more inches of thigh under her stretchy aqua miniskirt. He tried hard not to stare. Or did she want him to stare? Man, she was gorgeous. But he turned mad with a little tinge of insult when she ignored his hand. It was an affront to his ego to be disregarded.

“Shall I have the honor to treat you a drink?” he asked, granting her one last mercy before his endurance diminished.

“Shall I have the honor to let you know that I’m allergic to guys who think they have great charms but in fact don’t?” she retorted brusquely, returning his offer with a crude remark. She smiled naughtily, enjoying the immediate rage masking up his face.

“You b*tch.” he cursed with anger, grabbing her wrist hard. “Let me warn you. There’s limits to my patience and no girls who knew who I am dare defy me.” he pulled her close, tightening his grasp.

“Get off!” her fury levitated and in spur of a moment, she spat at his face. Initially, their commotion only resulted in one-second glances people nearby. But those glances turned into stares when Jolin broke her glass of vodka while struggling to get free. In front of their naked eyes, they witnessed that aggressive guy sending a tight slap across her face.

“So is the deal still on?” the Philip guy questioned bluntly. By now, the crowd had formed a half circle around them and they moved a step back, expecting fists to fly. They readied their looks of horror but none stepped in to help.

“You’ve picked the wrong girl to try to scare.” Jolin snapped, disinclined to give in. She tasted little fear but she was already accustomed to terrorization since time memorial. In fact, she was already numbed by threats. They no longer had major effects on her.

Meanwhile, a guy from the second level was secretly studying the situation below. “Ben.” he snapped his fingers and his assistant came.

“Yes Boss?” Ben asked.

“Show that guy what’s real business.” he ordered frostily, taking a sip of his Martina. “And bring that girl up.”
