Chapter 3

The Past

They were best friends since young. Their fathers were business partners and best friends. Their mothers were like sisters. He had fallen for her when they were still in high school. He had fallen for her hard, but they were still only friends. He had never dated anyone then. He wanted her and only her, but to her, he was just a friend to turn to. She turned to him when her heart got broken by her first boyfriend. She turned to him when she felt sad.

What she didn't know was that every tear that had dropped from her eye over her boyfriends, he had carried them on his mind for the rest of his life. When he got to college, he dated some girls, but he was never serious with them. Right before she was to go to college, their parents had decided to marry them against their will.

"Come on Joo Ji Hoon. Tell them you don't want to marry me." They were sitting in the living room with their parents.
He did want to marry her, but he knew that she would never grow to love him. He was like a best friend to her, not something he wanted to be. He looked at her sad face and it broke his heart. He knew that she was currently with her second boyfriend and he treated her good too.

"We're not in love. How can you make us get married like this." He protested against his heart's wishes.

"Son, you know that we're just doing this for your own good. We know that you guys are not in love, but you don't have to have love first. It can come after marriage."

"Mom...Dad...I don't want to get married yet. How can I go to college? I have dreams to become someone important."

"We already told you that you can't have what you want.
You have to marry Joo Ji Hoon. That's all we have to say."
Her father said sternly.

Joo Ji Hoon looked over at her and saw tears in her eyes. He held onto her hands and she looked over at him.

He looked at their parents. "How about we be engage for four years. After the four years, we'll get married. I want Yoon Eun Hye to go to college. I know that it is important to her and I respect that."

She looked wide eyed at him. "What are you doing?" He tightened his hold on her hand to keep her quiet.

"But....if after the four years we still don't fall in love, the marriage is off. This is our life. We should be able to have some options too."

Their parents looked at each other and finally agreed to it.

"Fine, son. If that's how you guys want to do it. I guess we can't force you to do any of this. Thank you both for at least agreeing to it." His father replied looking sad.

Two years had passed and he went to work for their father's company. He had already graduated a year before, but he wanted to have travel a bit. Just two months after working there, his parents both died. They were going on a vacation, but the plane never made it. In the third year of Yoon Eun Hye's college, her father died of a heart attack. She was going to become a doctor. He was made CEO of their father's company. She was studying in Seoul and had decided to live there after she had graduated. He knew that her mother was sad, but he never let her mother show it because he was like a son to her. Even after two years of only seeing each other occasionally, they never spoke of the engagement.

At least, until, he found out that her boyfriend who she was dating for four years had finally asked her to marry him.

"Can you void the contracts since our father's are not here anymore?"

"What contracts?"

"The marriage contracts. You know, our engagement?"

"Oh, why?"

"I have something really good to tell you. Im Taebin finally asked me to marry him. Aren't you happy for me?"

"....con..congratulations."

"So,can you?"

"Well, the contracts weren't signed by our fathers. They were signed by us. We have to go by it, or..."

"Or what? Tell me! Or what!?" She was angry that she was still stuck in this engagement.

"Or...the company will be...sold off."

"Sold off?"

"There is someone who has already signed a contract with our father about this situation. I didn't want to tell you before, but I think that you should know."

"So I can't marry my boyfriend?"

"Well, you can. Remember how it is said that if after the four years, we are still not in love, then the contract will be void? Well,..." He didn't really want her to know but he loved her too much. "Well, the four years are almost up. We just have to wait for two years."

"Two years?!! I can't wait that long."

"Unless, you would like to lose the company."

"The company is not important to me." She looked at him and saw that he was sad. She knew that he loved the company because it was started by both their father. "But, I know that you care about it a lot. I won't do anything to hurt you. I can wait for two more years."

She left and never came back. Until recently, when her mother got sick. She had been coming to visit her mother, but she never went to see him. It was like they were strangers. His heart broke when he knew that in a couple of months, she would be married to another man.
