I have learnt a lot since I came to this country three months ago. I came from Araluen, an island country in the middle of Indian Ocean. Araluen is a peaceful country ruled by my father, King Alfonso. Yes, I’m the crown prince.
What am I doing here in Westralia you may ask? Well, Westralia is a much bigger country. It is much more developed and it has good universities. So my father wants me to study postgraduate here. While I’m at it, he also wants me to learn about life. So I’m living a life of a normal student. I have to work for extra pocket money because my father doesn’t give me any. I don’t mind really. I enjoy making my own money. It’s a satisfying feeling. I will not have much chance doing this later on in my life.
Nobody knows who I am over here. So I’m quite safe and free to do anything and go anywhere. I still have my bodyguard who watches me when I’m out in public but he does it very subtly. More like an undercover agent.
I disappear into the back of the bar to change and take my stuff. It’s time for me to go home.
Suddenly I remember the girl who has been sitting at the bar. I have an urge to check if she’s okay. So I enter the bar from the front door and take a seat next to her.
“Hey,” I call.
She looks up. “Yeah?”
“How is it going?” I points to the paper.
She quickly covers the paper with her hands. I smile. “It’s okay, I won’t look. Are you feeling better now?”
She nodded. “Surprisingly, yes. Thank you!”
“You’re welcome. I’m Marco,” I extend my right hand.
“Irene,” she shakes it.
“Pretty name,” I comment.
“Thanks,” she smiles.
Her smile is sweet. I think she’s a nice girl. I wonder why she’s alone at this hour.
“I’m going home. My shift is over. What about you?”
She checks her watch. “Uhm…I’m waiting for my ride home.”
“If you live around here, I can give you a lift,” I offer.
“I live in St Anne College,” she says.
“Ow, I live in St George,” I tell her. St Anne and St George are next to each other. St Anne is a dormitory for girls while St George is for the guys. “Why don’t you come with me?” I offer again. “It’s late now, it’s not good for a girl to stay in a bar like this.”
I can see she hesitates. “I’m a good guy, I swear.” I realise she doesn’t know who I am. “I study in University of Westralia. Here’s my student card.”
Showing student card? How lame is that! I must look like a fool. Jeez! Great job, Marco!
