Fashion Designer, Writer & Flight attendant

Chapter 1: The Fashion Designer, The Writer, and The Flight attendant

She was known in the Fashion business for being stubborn and hard-headed. Not to mention beautiful and cold. Some say she’s hot and would jump at any chance to ‘get to know her better’ while others just labeled her weird and kept their distance. You either love her or hate her. You see, she wasn’t a very approachable person.

“I don’t like the sleeve of this dress that much…maybe you can shorten it?” A short, pudgy man said as he studied her design.

She shook her head. “I’m sorry, Mr. Tran. I don’t change any of my artwork.” her eyes narrowed as she stared at Mr. Tran. She looked slightly offended as her assistant and trainee slash best friend smiled nervously at their client, who had lowered her design and focused his attention on her.

“Michelle—“ Mr. Tran started as he was cut off.

“Ms. Hsuan.” She corrected as she crossed her legs.

“Michelle…he’s our big client, we can’t lose him!” her trainee whispered as Michelle glanced at her. She looked like she was about to have a nervous breakdown.

“Don’t worry, Sharon.” Michelle whispered as she watched Mr. Tran study her, and then her drawing. Sharon was Michelle’s best friend, the only one who understood her best aside from her two sisters. The two got along great despite their difference in personality.

“On second thought, your design is wonderful. I finally know why you insist on keeping your design the way it is. If the sleeve is made any shorter, the whole dress would look funny, it'll be ruined.” Mr. Tran smiled, showing a set of perfect, white teeth as he cocked his head, still admiring the piece of art.

Michelle only nodded as Sharon exhaled slowly. That was close. Then again, was there a time where Michelle did not succeed?

“I like your professionalism. Let it be other designers, they would have agreed to change their design according to my opinion. I will use your design for my upcoming fashion show. Nice doing business with Fashionistic Inc.” Mr. Tran said as he stood up.

Michelle barely smiled as she stood up and shook hands with Mr. Tran.

Sharon looked at the two, and smiled in relief.

She smiled happily as she signed her name over and over again. Her newly published children’s book was a big hit. She was holding an autograph session, and kids from all ages came to get her autograph on her famous new hit, ‘The Moon, The Stars, and The Grass.’ It was an odd title, right? But that was what drew so many curious readers to pick up her book and read it, and then falling in love with the story. Even parents loved the funny bedtime story that they read to their children during night.

How can someone be so talented as to target children, but then winning the parent’s liking too?

“Ella! Ella!” A little boy screamed as she waved the book in the air.

“Hey kiddo.” Ella grinned, her face brightening in joy.

“I love your story! I read it every single day before I go to bed! Will you sign your name for me? And can you draw a piggy for me too?” The little boy asked in excitement as his mother ruffled his hair and smiled at Ella, nodding at her.

“Of course I can! What’s your name?” Ella tapped the tip of the boy’s perky nose as he covered his mouth and giggled.

“My name is Jacky!” the boy exclaimed as he hopped up and down, watching as Ella draw the pig on the inside cover of the book.

“Thank you Ella! Bye bye!” Jacky waved goodbye as he walked hand-in-hand away with his mother.

“You sure have a lot of handsome little fans.” A voice said as she snapped her head up, staring at the face of a young man who stood in front of her. He was holding her book, grinning down at her.

“What’s your brother or sister’s name?” Ella asked, giving him a dimpled smile as she held her ink pen poised, ready to write.

“I’m an only child.” He informed her as she looked up at him, slightly puzzled.

He chuckled. “Actually, I might be the oldest fan you have.”

Ella’s eyes were round with surprise. He looked around 25. Did she mistake him, or did he just say he was a fan of her book?

“That’s right. I’m your fan of your new book. Actually, I’m a fan of all your books. You didn’t hear wrong. And oh—my name is Ron. Ron Ng.” He said as Ella looked slightly embarrassed. Guess her assumption was slightly off. Her books not only attracted mothers and children, it also attracted handsome, young guys…? Suddenly, her occupation seemed more appealing and much more interesting than ever. Can life get any better?

“Here you go.” She closed the book and handed it back to him. He took it, returning her dimpled smiled with his own.

“I heard the new captain’s young, handsome, talented, and sizzling HOT!” A girl clad in the red flight attendant’s uniform exclaimed as they sat in the airport’s staff lounge, sipping coffee.

“I bet he’ll fall for Nancy too.” Another stewardess chirped in as she joined the two, ordering a latte as she crossed her legs.

Nancy laughed. “Oh, stop teasing me.”

The girl sipping on her coffee nearly choked. “Hey, Tav, Nancy said we were teasing her.”

Tavia snorted. “Teasing? More like making a soon-to-happen assumption. Which guy does not fall for beautiful Nancy?”

“Leila.” Nancy said in a warning tone as her two friends high-fived and laughed. Nancy scowled as she crossed her arms.

“Oh hey, I could see that that business class passenger was totally into you.” Leila said as she stirred her latte.

“Oh, you mean Rico Kwok?” Nancy said nonchalantly as she freed her hair from the tight bun. Her hair fell loose, framing her heart-shaped face nicely.

“Oh, excuse me. I didn’t know you guys were on such good terms.” Leila said as Tavia giggled.

“She probably has his number too.” Tavia joked as Nancy snapped her fingers.

“Bingo. You guys interested? I don’t mind sharing a good catch. You can call him if you want.” Nancy winked as she pushed a little piece of paper towards Leila and Tavia.

“You sure?” Leila said as she picked the piece of paper up, waving it in Nancy’s face.

Nancy shrugged. “Sure, why not?”

Tavia shook her head in amusement as the three stood up. “Me and Lei are going home first.”

“Okay, call me out sometime.” Nancy said as Tavia nodded.

“Tell your sisters we said hi!” Leila yelled out as the two walked away, dragging their luggage behind them.

“So how was work today, girls?” Louis asked as he scooped some gravy, pouring it over the mashed potatoes.

“Dig in.” Jessica said as Louis handed his plate to Mary Jie, the maid, who walked into the kitchen.

“Work was fine. There’s a new captain!” Nancy exclaimed as her eyes sparkled mischievously.

Louis chuckled as he shook his head. He smiled at Jessica, who covered her laugh with a cough. Louis and Jessica were happily married. Her brother and sister-in-law were met with an ill fate while driving back from a business party during one dark, rainy night. They had dropped the three sisters off in Jessica’s care and the shocking news had a big impact on all five of them.

The three of them finally learned to ‘remember the past and look forward to the future’ as they matured, and Jessica and Louis filed and got full guardianship of the three. Jessica was a very well-known lawyer and Louis was Lieutenant at the Hong Kong Police Department. The two were very financially stable; in fact, you could even call them wealthy, which explains the cozy home they had established for them. They lived in a flat on the wealthier side of Hong Kong. And from then on, they lived like a big, happy family even though Louis and Jessica weren’t much older than them.

“Oh yeah, how was your autograph session, El?” Louis asked as he shoved a mouthful of sweet corn into his mouth.

Ella grinned. “I just found out a have a young, hot, fan!”

“I didn’t know you were into little boys. You pedophile!” Nancy accused as she giggled madly, laughing at her own joke.

Jessica and Louis laughed, shaking their head at Nancy's childishness.

“What’s his name?” Michelle chirped in. She was usually very quiet, the mature one out of the three. But when it came to family dinner and discussions that concerned her beloved sister’s love lives, she softened up a bit.

“Ron Ng.” Ella grinned, practically swooning.

“Ohh…even his name sounds hot!” Nancy teased as she jabbed Ella in the ribs.

Ella scowled and wrinkled her nose at her youngest sister. As you can see, Nancy was the youngest out of the three, and the bubbliest, flirtiest and immature one.

“How about you, big sis…met any hot guys today?” Nancy blurted out before two hands clamped down onto her big mouth. All eyes were on Michelle as Ella and Jessica removed their hands, shooing Nancy a warning glance.

She mumbled an “oops” before shoving a mouthful of mashed potatoes in her mouth, lowering her head and keeping as silent as a mouse.

Michelle’s eyes darkened as she forced a smile on her face. The dimple that rarely appeared on her face revealed itself. “I’m done.” Michelle stood up, pushing her chair back as she walked into the kitchen.

“Now look what you did!” Ella scolded Nancy as she glanced at Michelle’s back.

“Sorry! I forgot!” Nancy apologized shamefully as Louis sighed, shaking his head.

---

“Can we come in, Michelle?” Louis rapped lightly on Michelle’s door as he heard a soft “Come in.” Louis glanced at his wife before turning the knob.

Michelle was sketching another design, her floor littered with crumpled drawing paper.

Michelle looked up to find his aunt and uncle looking at her. She stopped drawing and smiled up at them. “I know you didn’t just come in here to look at the mess I made.” Michelle said as she gestured to the floor.

“At least you still know how to joke.” Louis said as he looked down at his wife, his arm slung comfortably over her shoulder.

“If you’re wondering if I’m thinking about him, I’m not. I forgot about him long ago.” Michelle gave her aunt and uncle what seemed like a reassuring smile and returned to her sketching.

“Honey, we’re worried about you.” Jessica said as she bent down and draped her arm over Michelle’s shoulder.

“Auntie, you don’t have to worry about me. You should worry about the cases on hand instead. You should go prepare for court tomorrow, and Uncle Louis, you have a meeting with the board tomorrow. Go get some rest. Goodnight.” Michelle stood up and gently ushered the two out.

Jessica gave Louis a helpless look as the door closed behind them.

“Oh well, Michelle is a smart girl. I’m sure she knows how to think for herself.” Louis said as Jessica nodded.

“I hope so.” Jessica murmured as the two walked into their bedroom.

---

“You dummy! You always manage get Michelle thinking about that bastard!” Ella scolded as Nancy pouted.

“I said I was sorry! It wasn’t like I meant to!” Nancy protested as Ella rolled her eyes.

“Don’t give me that face. I’m still mad at your big mouth.” Ella said as she walked over to her door, opening it, waiting expectantly for Nancy to return to her own room.

Nancy stuck out her lower lip, quivering slightly as she stared at her middle sister with her big eyes. “Don’t be mad at me, El.” She tugged shamefully at the hem of Ella's shirt and tilted her head.

Ella couldn’t help but smile as she looked at her younger sister’s adorable face. She hated herself for falling for it every time. “Okay, fine. I shouldn’t be the one you should be apologizing to anyway. Be careful of what you say next time.” Ella said as Nancy nodded, hugged her sister and then dashed off into her own room.
