E-SIX

Chapter 45

Hero smiled as he fastened Six’s seatbelt around her – he removed his scarf and tied it loosely around her neck, pressing a small, gentle kiss to her forehead. “I was so worried,” he told her, flattening her hair with his hands. “So worried – you have no idea.”

Hero sat beside her and told the driver to go, not bothering to put on his own seatbelt as he stared at her with fond eyes.

But she would not look at him – Six’s eyes were locked onto her lap, narrowing and widening with thought. She sniffed.

“What’s wrong?” he asked quietly, inching closer to her. His arm wrapped around her waist and he nuzzled her shoulder. “I got you – you’re safe. Don’t worry.”

“You…” she started, voice lost in emotion. “You’re Hero.”

He looked at her for a moment, and she repeated the words – “You’re Hero.”

He frowned against her shoulder, sucking in a small breath of air. “Yes, I’m Hero.” Six’s eyes hardened and she pushed him away from her. “Baby”- he started, but she merely inched away from him and tore the scarf from her neck. It drifted slowly to the floor, and Hero looked up at Six with annoyance in his eyes.

“What?” he snapped. “Yeah, I’m Hero, but that doesn’t change who I am! That doesn’t change who you are! You’re still Six, and I’m still Jae! See? We’re still the same people, Six!”

Six shook her head. “No,” she whispered. “We’re not.”

Hero scoffed. “I am still Jae. I am still the same person I was the last time I saw you. There is nothing different between us. Nothing. I’m still Jae, and you’re still Six!”

“No…”

“Yes, Six.”

“No,” she said again, turning her eyes to him. “You can still be J, but I can no longer be Six.”

Hero stared. There was a moment in which he looked mildly confused, but he seemed to cool suddenly. With a chuckle, he reached forward and brushed aside a stray hair.

“What do you mean?” he asked, pretending not to notice her flinch.

For a moment, there was silence, before Six spoke.

“E-Ninety-three,” she said.

“What?” Hero asked, incredulous.

“E-Ninety-three,” she repeated. “Carrying drone E-Ninety-three. Experiment. Robot.” She then turned to look at him, a severe burn of hurt on her face. “E-Six,” she continued.

“Information drone E-Six. Experiment. Robot.”
